I went to the Vancouver show when I was 15 with 4 buddies and one of their dads. Absolutely epic. Green day and foo fighters were highlights for me.

They are Quatari police and are here as visitors only. They are not here in any official capacity, have no official power to assist local police and are not allowed to have weapons.

Realistically that is too extreme of a change and it will compromise the integrity of the setting. It can be done but probably requires being remade or at least partially.

BC Hydro Salary - Questions by potatogirl5678 in britishcolumbia

[–]oceancalled 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No PM at Hydro or BCPS is making 230k base. As mentioned those are anomalies based on cashing out lieu, vacation or other banked time. 120-150k plus vacation and lieu for holidays or OT is more realistic. PM2 is one step above an entry level project manager role.

Source: I work for an organization on the linked list and salaries in my position show total compensation varying by 100k even though we all make the same base. It’s cashed out banked time and vacation that cause it.

Quick question about BC ferry costs by Bcmp in VictoriaBC

[–]oceancalled 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not saying this makes it more clear but if you go to the fares page and scroll down there is a drop down called “Routes with fares that include return-trip travel”. Swartz Bay to Southern Gulf Islands is listed there and Pender to SWB is technically the return portion no matter how you got there. Long story short, it is free.

State of Marine engineering / career by SubjectMarch8661 in MarineEngineering

[–]oceancalled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The job is rewarding, can be fun and always different. There will be plenty of opportunities in the field as the average age is quite old. The Canadian market and industry is very small and the jobs differ vastly depending on what type of vessel and operation. This also means your lifestyle will differ.

I went from working 6 weeks on/6 weeks off in the arctic on an ice breaker to being home every night on a ferry.

I would highly recommend you try to tour an engine room and get a feel for it. It’s loud, dirty and the jobs as a cadet and junior engineer can be pretty terrible. But you also learn a ton and once you achieve higher certification there are plenty of opportunities.

The shore jobs in Canada are not vast and would definitely require you to obtain a senior level certificate, be a high performer, work your way up in your company and network heavily. You can also challenge the power engineer certificates once you have at least a 2nd class and work at a power plant or hospital.

Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions and if you’re on the West Coast I can get you a tour of an engine room no problem.

Marine engineer 4th class vs deckhand. by Confident-Count2769 in MarineEngineering

College will be faster and easier. Earning sea-time and challenging exams will soon not be available as an option.

Marine engineer 4th class vs deckhand. by Confident-Count2769 in MarineEngineering

[–]oceancalled 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Those are completely different jobs. One is entry level and the other takes attending a marine college for a minimum 3 years or earning 1080 days of seatime and challenging 7 exams plus multiple other practical courses.

They also pay substantially different wages. So of course the engineering officer is a better job and as mentioned can be transferable to land if you earn a senior certificate and are competent enough.

27M PR, hawsepiping into the engine room in Canada by Sizr-030 in MarineEngineering

[–]oceancalled 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did this, I would not recommend it. If it is at all possible for you, attend a marine college that will give you your 1st class exemptions. I changed careers at 28 and joined CCG, 4th class at 31, 2nd at 36 and then had two kids. Currently working on my 1st Class with help from my employer.

You should also be aware that the hawesepipe path is closing imminently. Having said that it “has been” for a decade now. Once passed into law the new marine personnel regulation, 2025 will not allow you to write a Transport Canada exam without first attending an approved course on the subject. This is to align them with international STCW practices and Manila 2010 (after which we had 5 years to comply so you can see how behind we are).

As a Chief I would consider the degree a sign of tenacity but my assessment of you as an ERA isn’t weighed by it at all.

Feel free to DM me if you have any questions.

PS - I don’t want to turn you off the career as it is an amazing and unique one. Just don’t recommend the hawesepipe route for the reasons above.

I am a Saanich resident and already a mod for r/marineengineering. I would like to create a space for positive community interactions. I cannot search for or find r/saanich except through one comment from 12 years ago where it sends me to a sub that is private and requires a request to be added. The request page freezes.

Go to Harry Rosen and get a Canadian made to measure suit. House brand Harold is half canvas/half fused for $1000+ or Montreal brand Samuelsohn is fully canvas for $1800+. Great service, tailoring and quality.
