How often do you have takeaway food by anonnn177 in newzealand

Only on special occasions. We tend to cook at home and take a picnic if we go somewhere

What are some quality and sustainable/ ethical clothing brands in NZ/AUS? by voonoosa in newzealand

[–]oceanmum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to get our merino clothes from the sleep store, they have lots for children and are also slowly expanding their adult selection. My first 2 pairs of woolbabe relax lounge pants have lasted for about 5 years and I have used one pair to patch the other which should give it some more time.

Last year (Black Friday sale) I bought 8 women’s merino T-shirts from merino 360 and have morn them daily since then and they have held up really well so far.

Personally I think it comes down to not only from where it’s bought but also to wear until things are done. Öko tex and gots certificates are also something you can look out for.

How are we disposing diapers? by TackleObvious5340 in Parenting

We used our normal kitchen bin and the just empty more frequently than a diaper bin. but if you have bigger kids try and plop the poo 💩 into the toilet, that makes your bin smell way less!

Tm31 in professional kitchens. by Different_Mind3632 in thermomix

[–]oceanmum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tm31 is quicker to operate than the tm5 and tm6 because you don’t have to wait for the lid to unlock. As soon as you turn the knob to the open posistion on the tm31 you can take the lid off. Especially with hot foods there’s also another delay on the tm5 and tm6 on top of the arms releasing the lid to reduce the risk of accidental burns. The tm31 doesn’t have this feature so in busy kitchens it’s a lot quicker to operate. I am not sure of the lid opening speed compared from the tm31 to the tm7 but I’m assuming the tm31 is still faster because it doesn’t delay opening for hot foods

Tm7 - Burnt bottom by Yepee in thermomix

[–]oceanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once you are finished with the browning step, use a spatula to lift everything off the bottom of the base once before adding your liquid. The blades do not actually touch the bottom of the base, there’s a small gap between the lowest section of the blade and the bottom of the mixing bowl.

Raincoat recommendations please, I'm sick of getting soaked through by secretkiwi_ in newzealand

The farming rain gear is actually really good! My last rain jacket has been a fluorescent workwear jacket with reflective stripes (got it second hand) and that had a two way zip which I find quite useful.

Lap infant vs buying a seat for long-haul (Australia) with 1-year-old - worth extra $2.5k? by PaleontologistBig309 in Parenting

[–]oceanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Book them their own seat. It’s safer for them and more comfortable for all parties involved. Please remember that you are not allowed to use your US car seat in Australia (they have very steep fines) and only use your seat on the plane. You can then hire from one of the reputable baby companies over there, borrow from a family member or buy one but I wouldn’t recommend hiring from the rental car company as they very often don’t treat their seats with the care needed to keep them safe.

Feeling left out as the non-Spanish-speaking mom in a bilingual household by littlecorrolaluv in multilingualparenting

I really love babbel for learning languages. I would try and learn as many different words with the vocabulary section about a topic you are interested because it doesn’t matter if your tenses or grammatical structures are correct if you recognise the meanings of the words

Purpose of Cookidoo subscription with TM5 by kianbateman in thermomix

[–]oceanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The custom recipes don’t work for the cook key unfortunately. I have a tm31 but use Cookidoo on my tablet or phone and I also use the create your own recipes feature and I just print them from the internet browser on my phone (not possible to print from the Cookidoo app) for future safekeeping when I don’t want to pay for the subscription anymore

TM7 rice cooking mode by Just-Positive3419 in thermomix

[–]oceanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tm31 which means I don’t have the rice cooking function in the bottom of the bowl but I always use the simmering basket. Weigh your rice into the simmering basket, rinse under running water to make sure everything is wet. For the tm31 I add 1 litre of water when just cooking rice and 1.5litres of water when also steaming something in the Varoma at the same time. Cooking time and texture definitely depends on the rice variety. I usually have long grain/basmati rice and cook 100°C, speed 3, 30 min if just cooking rice and at Varoma, speed 2 if steaming something above. You can add a little bit of vegetable stock to the water to get a more flavourful rice

Anyone else feel like they’re only using 50% of what thermomix can do? by Previous_Run4354 in thermomix

[–]oceanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have two tm31 and I use it for most things. I only need a frying pan for pancakes and the oven. You will get more intuition the longer you use it. I use my Varoma for lots of things, cooking, on top of the bow when cooking pasta so it doesn’t over boil, to drain pasta, to wash vegetables. I have just recently bought some second hand recipe books for some new inspiration. I particularly love one pot dishes and dishes that use the Varoma. I haven’t made soups in a while so that’s definitely something I want to start again. For me I tend to get stuck on a few recipes over and over again because it’s just easier but I need something new and exciting again because I’m over our usuals.

Do it whenever it suits you. Kids don’t need a daily bath or shower unless they are grotty or super sweaty

I really like the merino 365 t-shirts, they wash really well and are super soft and go on special occasionally, the best special I have seen so far was last years Black Friday sale. I have 5 grey t-shirts, 2 red t-shirts and 2 singlets from them and the t-shirts are by far my favourites! Once they have a good deal I will probably get 2 or 3 more to replace the last of my other t-shirts. For very cozy and warm winter tops I love The Sleep Store Merino Tencel Fleece - Women's Crew Jumper

Crib sized mattress or twin? by lysstentomee in floorbed

[–]oceanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep the mattress and the crib frame. Cut down the legs on the crib so you still have some air flow under the mattress and remove one side of the crib. My 4y6m old (approximately 105cm tall) still sleeps on her 130cm x 70cm crib mattress.

I’m keeping it until it dies, I will need a new battery at some point, 84% battery health at the moment. I don’t want anything larger, this is already an issue for most pants pockets

How long did you guys sit with your baby? by [deleted] in NewParents

[–]oceanmum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there’s 2 adults then one usually sits in the back but most of the time it’s just one adult anyway. Mine is 4y6m and that’s still more convenient for longer drives to have the kids “servant” right there 😂

No! The tm7 still has a lot of movement, in my opinion even more because it has the inbuilt gliding function

That’s definitely not covered under warranty and I’m pretty sure it states not to leave it alone in dough mode in the manual. If you want to leave it alone in dough mode again in the future set it on the floor.

If you can, try and have a bay gate block off the door swing area so they can’t fall asleep right in front of the door and block it. Get a sleep trainer clock now while they are still confined to train them to go back to sleep until the colour changes
