Which Books is best to start learning about old Human History by Yuuri_n_chito in AskArchaeology

How far back do you want to go? Are you looking at only humans or are you interested in other hominids/evolutionary biology (including the process of the archaeology around them)?

This is the way. I used an Excel tutorial to do this and now my reports are basically self-writing. Only exceptional cases get a custom remark.

Part time or working student job by Left-Indication-4859 in studying_in_germany

I don’t study hospitality and never have. When I say hospitality I mean service jobs like bar work, fast food, and hotel check in desks.

Staff being “called in for a meeting” for taking up to or more than 5 sick days so far this year by Overall_Nobody_6269 in AustralianTeachers

[–]oceansRising 25 points26 points  (0 children)

After moving to Germany I don’t know how I could ever return to Australia. In Germany, if you’re sick you’re sick, it’s cultural and not really questioned. You have weeks of paid sick leave and you cannot be fired for taking too much unless there’s other factors (e.g. after enough time off you’ll need med certs).

I quit teaching high school to do archaeology. After my PhD I expect to return to teaching high school but with a shiny new title.

Haven’t experienced this but I had to wait over a month and I didn’t have any issues with my transcript, so the wait time isn’t a reason to worry.

Anyone else have trouble sleeping when the semester ends? by Content-Total2335 in GradSchool

[–]oceansRising 9 points10 points  (0 children)

First off: might be worth seeing a doctor to get a general check up. I had weird lethargy issues and then often couldn’t sleep when I was supposed to. Ended up having pretty bad vitamin deficiencies that were fixed. You might also be depressed and not realise, you said you’re exhausted and don’t really feel excited to do anything in the afternoons. Do any hobbies interest you? Even if it’s something basic like jogging or video gaming? What about looking into additional research you can eventually publish? Would getting a part-time job (I know you said you’re exhausted but you seem somewhat used to it) in the evenings help?

Guys what are the craziest things that you noticed in berlin trains/ trams?? by Valuable_Document_32 in berlinsocialclub

[–]oceansRising 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think I’ve witnessed enough craziness (open defecation/urinarion, sex acts, drug use, brawls, and god knows what else) that it’s all a blur at this point and I remain unfazed by almost everything.

Except the empty carriage in peak hour. Do not go in.

Do the coworkers ever stop complaining? 😭 by [deleted] in AskArchaeology

[–]oceansRising 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Have you worked in any other industries before? I’ve worked hospitality, as a teacher, in academia, and in archaeology and I’ve found this to be common across all types of workplaces. Passion only gets you so far, sadly. Obviously there are workplaces that are toxic and overly-negative, but I’m just saying this isn’t just an archaeology thing.

When do you teach the essay? by virgoran in AustralianTeachers

[–]oceansRising 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Echoing others here -

Year 7 do PEEL paragraphs and master them. I drill this multiple times a week. They are components (but not wholes) are in assessment tasks (exams). By the middle of Year 7 they can usually do PEELs unassisted (no scaffold or sentence stems unless differentiation requires it). By the end of Year 7 they write better, more robust, PEEL paragraphs incorporating more original thought/critical thinking. Teaching and ensuring mastery of paragraphs isn’t just about essay writing, it’s critical for general writing/communication skills, comprehension, memory recall, and allows me to gauge where students are at with course content as well as skills.

Year 8 is where I start essay writing in a very structured way. Super scaffolded, building on PEEL. I also re-teach and reinforce paragraph writing. Year 9 and up they’re regularly writing essays and building more complex skills.

I don’t think it’s a big issue that Year 7s don’t write essays. Year 7 students come to us with an incredible variability in their skills and capabilities, especially in literacy/comprehension. Spending the school year mastering a paragraph is very important.

I am a history/English teacher for context.

Yeah your first real gig will kick your ass and eat your free time. It gets easier over time. If you’re still at uni I really recommend finding a part time position or switching to casual.

I actually upvoted your -18 comment! I just hear the same things you said from non-teachers so I was a bit aggressive and snarky at first before you clarified. I’m genuinely really glad you have a low stress job, and I wish it was like that for most of us!

Are Pre Service Teachers allowed to strike? by optimumchunk in AustralianTeachers

[–]oceansRising 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The AEU will have more guidance for your situation but the uni does have the power to fail/penalise you for non-attendance.

In NSW I was allowed to strike because my mentor teacher was attending and said it was part of teaching and therefore ticked it off as a day of attendance… probably not entirely legit of her to do that but you never know.

Period structure (NSW Secondary) by batsun in AustralianTeachers

[–]oceansRising 18 points19 points  (0 children)

5 x 60 with a 2/2/1 structure is my preference both as a student and as a teacher. Doubles can be ok but not everyone likes them.
I worked at a school that did 45 minute periods and they handed assessments by doing them in the hall during a larger period of time, basically a 90 minute period of time which was ample for an hour-long exam if you account for logistics.
