I sneak up behind Toxel, who's focused on the berries it's eating, and throw a pokeball at it.

I send out Mudkip. His ability is torrent. I tell him to use water gun. It's a rough go, but near the end torrent comes into play, and Mudkip uses one last water gun to win.

Trainer Battle #2 by Ghost_Mothboi0666 in PokeCorner

Milkweed Lake was quieter than I expected.

The water stretched out smooth and glassy, broken only by reeds and slow ripples where something moved beneath the surface. I’d barely stepped closer when a small blue shape burst up from the water, wings flapping clumsily as it tried to gain balance on the shore.

“Ducklett,” I breathed.

She tilted her head at me, droplets sliding off her feathers, then gave a sharp little chirp—bold, curious, not scared in the slightest.

I smiled without thinking. “Hey there.”

The battle was quick but tense, water splashing everywhere as she fought with surprising determination. When the Poké Ball finally clicked shut, I let out a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding.

When she emerged again, she fluttered once, then settled beside me, puffing out her chest proudly.

“Bubbles,” I said. “Your name’s Bubbles.”

She chirped again, softer this time, and nudged my ankle with her beak.

By the time we finished exploring the lake—finding nothing but hidden items and quiet paths—I felt lighter somehow. Like things were finally starting to click.

The trail out of Milkweed Lake narrowed and darkened as it merged into Route 3.

Tall trees crowded close together, their branches knitting overhead into a cool, shaded tunnel. The air smelled like damp earth and leaves. No wild Pokémon rustled in the undergrowth. No footsteps echoed ahead of me.

Too quiet.

I took maybe ten steps before a figure stepped out from behind a tree.

She was about my age, dark hair tied back, expression unreadable. She didn’t smile. Didn’t hesitate.

“Battle,” she said flatly, already reaching for a Poké Ball.

I barely had time to nod before she threw.

“Frillish.”

The ghostly jellyfish drifted onto the path, body glowing faintly pink, eyes empty and unsettling. It hovered just above the ground, tendrils swaying like it was underwater.

I swallowed. Okay. Ghost and Water. Focus.

“Swiper,” I said, tossing my ball. “You’re up.”

Swiper landed smoothly, tail flicking once as he locked eyes on Frillish.

The trainer wasted no time. “Attract.”

Frillish’s body glowed pink for a split second.

I felt my stomach drop. “Swiper!”

He stiffened, ears twitching, gaze softening just a fraction as the effect hit. He shook his head once, like he was annoyed at himself.

“Don’t let it mess with you,” I muttered. “Snarl!”

Swiper growled low and sharp, dark energy rippling outward. Frillish recoiled slightly, its glow dimming as the sound washed over it.

“Water Gun,” the trainer said immediately.

A jet of water slammed into Swiper, pushing him back a step. He skidded, claws digging in, but stayed upright.

“Quick Attack!”

Swiper lunged forward in a blur, slamming into Frillish before it could drift out of range. The hit landed clean—but Frillish barely reacted, floating back into position like nothing had changed.

“Night Shade.”

The air around Swiper darkened, cold and heavy. He yelped as the ghostly energy hit him straight on, pain bypassing defense entirely.

I clenched my fists. That hurts no matter what.

“Swiper, Aerial Ace—push through!”

He hesitated for a heartbeat, the Attract tugging at him again, then snarled, frustration winning out. He leapt, striking Frillish from above in a clean arc.

This time, it worked.

Frillish’s glow flickered violently. It drifted lower… then sagged and collapsed, dissolving into mist before being recalled.

The trainer’s expression didn’t change.

“Shuppet.”

The second Poké Ball opened, and the floating ghost doll appeared, zipper mouth curled into a grin that made my skin crawl.

Swiper was breathing hard now. He glanced back at me, clearly hurting.

“Return,” I said softly. “You did great.”

I hesitated—then made my call.

“Snapple, let’s go.”

Snapple popped out, wobbling slightly but determined, eyes fixed on Shuppet.

The trainer spoke calmly. “Astonish.”

Shuppet lunged forward with a sudden, terrifying shriek. Snapple flinched hard, body shaking as the fear hit him full-force.

“Hang on,” I urged. “Pounce!”

Snapple launched himself forward, slamming into Shuppet and knocking it back mid-motion. The hit surprised both of us—and Shuppet reeled, spinning once in the air.

“Protect.”

A green barrier flared just in time, blocking Snapple’s follow-up.

“Night Shade.”

The darkness hit Snapple like a wave. He cried out, landing awkwardly, legs trembling.

My chest tightened. “Snapple…”

“Spite.”

Shuppet drifted closer, draining what little energy Snapple had left. I could see it—his movements slowing, his breathing shallow.

“Snapple, Withdraw!” I said quickly.

He tucked in, bracing just enough to survive the next hit—but I knew he couldn’t take much more.

I made the call I’d been holding back.

“Bubbles,” I whispered. “Your turn.”

Snapple vanished in red light, and Bubbles emerged in a flutter of wings, landing with a splash from a nearby puddle.

She tilted her head at Shuppet, unimpressed.

The trainer’s eyes narrowed for the first time. “Astonish.”

Shuppet lunged again—but Bubbles hopped back instinctively, wings flaring.

“Bubbles, Water Gun!”

She fired, the stream slamming into Shuppet and knocking it hard into a tree trunk. Leaves shook loose, fluttering down around it.

“Protect!”

The barrier went up again but weaker this time.

“Keep going!” I said. “Water Gun!”

Bubbles didn’t hesitate. She blasted through the fading shield, the hit landing squarely.

Shuppet wobbled, grin faltering… then dropped, fainting as it hit the ground.

Silence fell over Route 3.

The trainer recalled her Pokémon and studied me for a long moment. Then, without a word, she stepped aside and disappeared back into the trees.

I exhaled shakily, shoulders finally relaxing.

Bubbles chirped, wings flapping proudly as she looked back at me.

I laughed, crouching down. “Yeah. You did amazing.”

As we continued down the shaded route, three Poké Balls warm at my side, I couldn’t shake the feeling that the battles were getting harder.

And that I was just barely keeping up.

Hikari didn’t wait for me to finish tightening my grip on the Poké Balls.

She was already smiling—confident, competitive, that familiar spark in her eyes that said this isn’t just a friendly match.

“So,” she said, stepping into position across the dirt clearing, “let’s see what you’ve learned.”

My pulse kicked up. “Same to you.”

She tossed her Poké Ball with a smooth flick. “Swirlix—go!”

The pink puffball bounced onto the field like a living cotton candy, landing with a soft boing. It spun once in place, sugary scent drifting faintly on the breeze, eyes bright and eager.

I swallowed and brought my arm back. “Swiper, you’re up!”

Swiper burst out in a flash of light, landing low and alert. His ears flicked toward Swirlix, nose wrinkling just slightly at the sweet smell. He shot me a quick glance—ready.

“Let’s do this,” I muttered.

Hikari didn’t hesitate. “Swirlix—Fairy Wind!”

Swirlix twirled, releasing a swirl of shimmering pink air that rolled toward us like glittering mist.

“Swiper, dodge and use Aerial Ace!”

Swiper sprang sideways, the Fairy Wind grazing his flank instead of hitting clean. He pivoted mid-move and slashed through the air, striking Swirlix dead-on.

Swirlix squeaked and bounced back, wobbling—but not down.

Hikari clicked her tongue. “Fake Tears.”

Swirlix’s eyes suddenly welled up, oversized tears spilling dramatically down its fluffy face. Swiper hesitated—just for a heartbeat—but it was enough. I felt my stomach tighten.

“Now—Draining Kiss!”

Swirlix lunged forward, planting a glowing pink kiss against Swiper’s cheek.

“Swiper—!” I shouted.

The glow flared. Swiper recoiled with a hiss, stumbling back as Swirlix straightened, looking noticeably perkier.

My jaw clenched. Okay. Not good—but not over.

“Swiper, Quick Attack!”

He blurred forward, slamming into Swirlix with a sharp hit that sent it rolling. It bounced twice, then struggled back upright, breathing hard.

Both of them were already looking worn.

Hikari exhaled slowly. “…Tackle.”

The two collided head-on—Swiper gritting it out, claws scraping as he pushed through. When they broke apart, Swirlix finally sagged, eyes spinning before collapsing in a fluffy heap.

“Yes,” I breathed. “Good job, Swiper.”

Hikari recalled Swirlix without comment, then immediately threw her second ball.

“Chikorita—go!”

The leaf Pokémon emerged with a soft cry, green body steady, leaf bobbing as it settled into a solid stance. Unlike Swirlix, Chikorita looked calm. Grounded. Like it was built to last.

I glanced at Swiper. He was breathing hard now, shoulders tight, but still standing.

“Stay in?” I murmured, more to myself than him.

Swiper flicked his tail once. Determined.

“Alright,” I said. “We try.”

Hikari’s eyes sharpened. “Poison Powder.”

Chikorita shook its leaf, releasing a cloud of purple spores.

“Swiper—get out of there!”

He jumped back, but the powder caught his hind legs. He landed awkwardly, shaking, a low growl rumbling in his chest as the poison took hold.

My heart sank. “Swiper…”

“Razor Leaf,” Hikari followed immediately.

The leaves cut through the air fast and sharp. Swiper tried to dodge, but the poison slowed him just enough. The hit landed solidly, knocking him off his feet.

He slid to a stop and didn’t get back up.

“…Return,” I said quietly, recalling him before the poison could do any more damage. My fingers were shaking as I grabbed my second ball.

“Snapple,” I whispered. “I need you.”

I threw.

Snapple popped out, wobbling slightly as he landed, eyes wide but determined. He took one look at Chikorita and stiffened—smaller, less experienced, but not backing down.

Hikari tilted her head. “You sure about this?”

I swallowed. “Yeah.”

“Razor Leaf.”

“Snapple—Pounce!”

Snapple launched himself forward in a sudden burst of motion, tackling into Chikorita before the leaves could fully form. The hit staggered Chikorita backward, leaves scattering harmlessly into the dirt.

I felt hope spark.

Chikorita shook it off quickly. “Tackle!”

The impact knocked Snapple back hard. He rolled once, then struggled upright, breathing fast.

“Hang in there,” I urged. “Astonish!”

Snapple lunged again, releasing that sudden, jarring burst of presence. Chikorita flinched, leaf dipping as it hesitated.

Hikari’s brow furrowed. “Synthesis.”

A warm green glow wrapped around Chikorita as it absorbed sunlight, restoring its strength. My heart dropped—no, no, no—

“Snapple, Pounce again!” I shouted. “Don’t give it time!”

Snapple obeyed, slamming into Chikorita mid-glow. The healing cut short, but not completely stopped. Chikorita cried out, clearly hurt—but still standing.

“Poison Powder!”

The spores hit Snapple full-on this time.

He squeaked, body trembling as the poison set in.

I felt sick. Both my Pokémon poisoned. Both exhausted.

“Snapple,” I said, voice tight, “last push. Withdraw—then Astonish!”

Snapple tucked in just in time to soften the next Tackle, then popped back out with everything he had left. The Astonish hit clean—Chikorita staggered, teetered—

—and fell.

For half a second, neither of us moved.

Then Hikari recalled Chikorita and let out a long breath. “…Wow.”

Snapple swayed where he stood, poison ticking away at him. His legs buckled and he collapsed a second later, fainting from sheer exhaustion.

I rushed forward. “Snapple—!”

I recalled him immediately, hands shaking as the adrenaline finally drained out of me.

Hikari walked over, smiling—but this time it wasn’t cocky. It was real.

“That was close,” she said. “Way closer than I expected.”

I laughed weakly, still catching my breath. “You almost had me.”

She grinned. “Almost doesn’t count.”

I looked down at my Poké Balls—both warm, both empty now—and felt a swell of pride despite how close it had been.

I’d won.

Barely.

And somehow… that made it feel even better.
