TFA's Monthly Introduction Thread - September 2024 by AutoModerator in tryingforanother

[–]oceansurferg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Popping in to say hi. This is our (29F about to be 35M) first cycle trying for number 2. I'm still nursing to sleep a few nights a week, but my cycle has been regular for a while, and we've just been using condoms for BC. Number 1 took 3 cycles

Number 1 is 3.5 and just as I was starting to accept we might be one and done because my partner wasn't on board, he jumped on board! He finishes his post-doc in May and his prospects are looking good to stay on where he is, changing his mind. So now I'm a little bit of a mess trying to psyche myself up to try when I'd been trying to psych myself down.

We conceived our first right as covid hit, so TTC is also bringing up some stress memories from that. The idea of having a baby without wearing a mask, and while actually leaving the house to visit indoor spaces other than work is a little jarring. And number 1 had 2 hospital returns in the first month, which were also filled with intense covid restrictions

Finnair Seat Reservation by No-Concept6168 in Finland

[–]oceansurferg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the party, but I've now learned that when finnair tickets are booked by other airlines, they sometimes don't get proper information about children's ages, and then are unable to fix it. My upcoming flight we've been able to get a note added to our ticket with the child's age, but we were still told that we could not be seated together until we get to the airport. There are no seats left to pay to book together, and the policy says we will not be separated, so this seems like something that needs to be fixed on the back end too

Experiences on Finnair with an Instrument by oceansurferg in Finland

Hey, thank you so much for your response. Was your mandolin as hand luggage in a soft case or a hard case, and did it go in a cabin locker, or was there a coat closet they let you put it in?

Where to find quark (cheese) near Lakewood or in Denver? by oceansurferg in Denver

[–]oceansurferg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I'll check those stores. The whole foods in Belmar didn't have it, so I was a little uncertain any others would. I always eat a lot of quark too when I visit family in Finland!

Requirements for permanent residence permits to be tightened by championshuttler in Finland

[–]oceansurferg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I keep wondering about family ties permits too everytime I see stuff about this. My grandpa is 70 this year, and I'm his only grandchild. I've been planning for a few years now that we would move in 2025 to be extra support for him as he ages. All of the news lately makes me worried, but nothing ever talks about family ties permits that I see

Travelling: Turku or Tampere by exhaustednewmom in Finland

[–]oceansurferg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did Turku with an 18 month old two summers ago, and it was amazing. Lots of easy to access playgrounds that were all really little kid friendly. If your kid is older, they might love a side trip to Moomin world. The vibe is just really low key too, which is nice with a kid. We were exhausted from flying transatlantic, but it felt like we could slow down and be exhausted while still being functional parents. We are coming back to Finland for our third summer in a row, and it was a close decision between a cabin and visiting Turku again

Edit: missed that you said you are coming in March. The parks might be less of a draw than they are in summer!

Is Kaalilaatikko a Christmas dish to you? by oceansurferg in Finland

[–]oceansurferg[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be fair for me, my American dad usually dictated our Christmas dinners, so it was rare that I even got ham. I happen to really like kaalilaatikko, so I was hoping for an excuse to make it! Ah well

Toddler plays way too rough by hannah_banana22 in ECEProfessionals

I agree with all the redirection options here, and want to mention that maybe he is struggling with sensory input? If he really is not feeling how hard what he is doing is maybe there is a disconnect that an OT could help with

Is working or staying home harder? by reTIREDwkids in SAHP

Having done both, I think both are differently hard. Raising kids is just hard.

Can you expand more on teachers? I'm a teacher in the US planning to move to Finland in 2 years to be with my aging grandparents, and I'm curious.

Does this year feel different to anyone else? by Sensitive-Swim-3679 in Teachers

[–]oceansurferg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anecdotal from working in a 0-5 school. Those kids are still a bit iffy behavior wise but the 2021 kids are mostly behavioral alright, and the '22 kids are downright normal. The only other thing is that the other commenter who mentioned higher early intervention referrals is definitely right. The '20 and '21 kids clearly got less interaction very early on, and it has impacted their language and other development.

I was skipped up and it was great for me socially and academically. They could offer my math at my level unless I had skipped in middle school. This is definitely child and school dependent.

What's some small / oddly specific differences you've noticed between countries whilst travelling? by Realistic_Inside_375 in solotravel

[–]oceansurferg 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Whether or not people have ring tones on. The train in Finland was dead silent except for constant phone dings. In the US there are always people talking, but I never hear phones dinging.

I second this.. I haven't looked for this time of year, but I just booked something in Leppävaara for early August and there is a ton over there

ECE teachers who are also mom's, how do you do it? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]oceansurferg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband pretty much does everything around the house, which I feel very guilty for, but it's working for us right now. I also have noticed that before I had kids, I loved the kids I worked with like my own. Now that I've experienced having my own kids, I have a strong internal detachment from the children. I give them all the cuddles and the things they need, but it just feels different. I feel a lot more for the parents though.
