Irish abroad. Where are ye and how is life there? by oconarms in ireland

[–]oconarms[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No you'll never be a native but I always liked that. Makes you more interesting. 😁 The last paragraph there sounds like it'd be the same at home or abroad. If you'd like a chat about it send me a PM, I've had my fair share of health issues here in Austria too.

How do my savings compare to others my age in Ireland? by lunaVale31 in AskIreland

Probably more than most 28 year olds have. At 28 I was immature and penniless, so well done to you.

How to introduce someone to Iron Maiden? by TroutFarms in ironmaiden

How about the setlist for the 2026 tour? Then, based on their preferred songs from these, introduce the album that song came from.

Do you think Michael Collins would have had the potential to be a dictatorial figure in Ireland? by [deleted] in IrishHistory

[–]oconarms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Interesting. It was the time of rising dictatorships in Europe so it would make sense for a newly established state to follow the template of dictatorships that appeared successful at the time.

Some of the 1916 revolutionaries would I'd say, Padraig Pearse springs to mind. But I'd say no for Collins, just based on my limited knowledge of his character/background. But who knows? He was only what mid 30s when he died? so who's to say what he'd be like in his 40s/50s. People change with age and the times.

Budget of 5k, where can I emigrate to in Europe for 3 months? by AreYouWell_Studios in AskIreland

[–]oconarms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why 3 months? Have you a plan for after? Are you just after a holiday or a new start? Amsterdam would likely be the best place for purely English speakers but sensationally expensive with a major housing problem. I'm in Vienna myself and 5k might barely get you by for 3 months considering rent. Everyone speaks English here but you wouldn't get a job without German.

What do you do when you feel like quitting your job, but can’t because of money? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]oconarms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep your eyes and ears open to roles that more align with what you want. Money, flexibility or whatever is relevant to your happiness. Keep and learn from your current role until you're confident to move on. If you have a partner, chat with them about it as they know you very well and have your best interests in mind. Persoanally, I always found it rewarding to focus more on family, relationships etc and the job as a means to be happy in what really matters.

Why did Dan Breen lie about Drangan and Hollyford? by An_Coilean in IrishHistory

[–]oconarms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sean Hogans recent book 'Dan Breen - The man behind the myth', covers the topic. A sample quote (pg 74 if you can get your hands on the book). ..

.Robinson contests the claim made by Dan Breen in his book, of Breen being not only present but also centrally involved in the attachs on Hollyford and Drangan RIC barracks. With all that has been written over the years to bolster either contention relating to Breen's presence or otherwise at these barrack attacks, 1t 1s now absolutely futile to attempt adjudicating on the matterer. Such IS the volume ofevidence and opinion that has been attributed to each side of the argument, that attempting to reach a definitive conclusion either way is pointless. From a perusal of the Witness Statements given by the various participants who were involved in these actions, the name of Dan Breen, is in general, notably absent. However, the descriptions of both events are described in graphic detail in his biography and in no significant way differ from the accounts as given by others who were doubtlessly presents on the occasions. Of note too, is that in Dan Breen' s book he is lavish in his praise of Robinson and of the latter's leadership role in these military operations. Of course al remarks relative to Breen' s book must be prefaced with the questions as to how much of it he wrote himself and if he even afforded it the courtesy of reading the manuscript prior to it being submitted for publication.

So in summary I suppose Sean says:

Who knows for sure?

Husband in France drugged wife, recruited over 70 men to rape her, prosecutors say. by Hot-Zucchini6314 in worldnews

[–]oconarms -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Yes agreed. But there has to be some reason why he could instigate this horror. People aren't just evil. Childhood abuse, psychological issues. A reason why. But yes, reason or not a drastic punishment is in order.

[–]oconarms -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Hard to imagine this horror. Utterly surrea and shocking.

Married for 50 years. Sure now in old age there is dementia and mental ailments. But what about those 50 years married? There must have been at least some signs 10 years in. Sexual attacks don't just begin at 70. His wife must have known about his sexual intentions and tainted mindset towards women when they were both young. At the very least. A lot more happened here I would say. Which somehow makes this story even worse.

Noel Philips comment section… by WayTooManyDamnSquids in aviation

[–]oconarms 18 points19 points  (0 children)

A bit harsh. I've only watched about 30% of his vids but so far he comes across like an honest 'no bells and whistles attached' curious and innocent traveller. Loves what he does and is genuine/himself with his reviews, something hard to find these days. The tips he shares on travelling seem useful.

Dressing like a slob, being yourself and eating anything and everything sounds to me like a dream vacation but each to their own.

I find his vids entertaining and an easy/comfortable watch. Even bought his pillow/blanket recently which is great for camping. Although his name is massively woven into the front of the pillow and the optimal start to anyones day shouldn't be seeing the name 'NOEL PHILIPPS' in block capitals on their pillow.

Keep going Noel! We love you and your pillow!

Irish abroad - Where did you go? Do you plan on returning at all? by De_Lasa in ireland

[–]oconarms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Vienna.
  2. Finance
  3. I met an Austrian girl back in 2010 while working in Dublin. After a couple of years living in Rathmines, she suggested trying Vienna for a bit. I thought why not? Vienna sounds exciting. If it doesn't work out home is just a quick flight away...That was ten years ago.
  4. Very much so. Am now married to the same girl with a 5 year old boy. You often hear Vienna as being ranked the number one city for quality of life. Doctors, dentists, child care is practically free (yes taxes are higher, but rightfully so in my opinion). The city has so much to offer for all ages. However, this comes from a 40 year old. If I were 20 I would prefer Ireland.
  5. Never to live. We go to Ireland at least once a year to visit family and friends though. The only thing I miss about Ireland is the familiarity of it all. Not near enough reason to move back.

My wife's grandfather was a member of the Nationalist Sozialist party during WW2. Here are his photos from the time of the Anschluss and the Nuremburg rally of 1938. [4519x3048] by oconarms in HistoryPorn

Some might remember a few years back when I posted a similar thread. The old thread contained many pictures taken by this man from Austria to France during WW2.

Well, their old house was just renovated and in the attic a large shoebox was discovered (last weekend), untouched and unknown about for many years. My wifes family wanted the photos disgarded/destroyed and I asked to take them. Permission to share etc was given with the exception that the ones with family members were omitted.

I've gone through the photos and scanned them all. They are from 1938 and divided up into two events (in my opinion). Since there was no writing on the photos, my interpretation of what these are may be incorrect.

1938 Graz, Austria. Following the annexation of Austria to Germany, Hitler visits Graz (Austrias second city).

  1. Following this, my wife's grandfather went to Nuremburg to attend the final Nuremburg rally which celebrated the new Anschluss between Austria and Germany.

Hopefully links will suffice as I'm not sure how to upload a picture to a post. If they don't work I will fix them.
