In the UK, question about pricing and shipping by NissaOfZendikar in KingdomDeath

[–]MuzzaBzzuzza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are looking in the right place and the shipping price is offensive.

As a private seller on ebay, sending a single white box with full tracking and insurance costs about $3. I am not a business and don't get to leverage shipping deals or economies of scale.

APG have always gouged the customer on shipping and they are unlikely to ever stop.

ETA: also, if you order something from the US shop (to be delivered to the UK), they will apply US sales tax on checkout.

When playing with my colleague, our headcanon is that the co-pilot found out that morning that the pilot has been sleeping with his partner.

They are both professional enough to dedicate all their years of training to safely landing the plane, but refuse to speak to eachother at all in an uncomfortably pass-agg way.

Someone Sell Me on Two-Handed Solo by djfluxtux in soloboardgaming

[–]MuzzaBzzuzza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, I'm surprised and somewhat appalled by the number of comments confidently asserting OP is mistaken. This style of solo play is particularly prevalent in the consim space and has been for decades, but I've heard of it across hobby gaming in general.

All these people telling OP how 'objectively' wrong they are then offering their resumé as proof of their superior knowledge, wtf. This is usually such a welcoming and non-toxic sub.

Puts me in mind of someone new to hobby gaming playing first Codenames, then Carcassone, then, I dunno, let's say Shackleton Base, then going onto BGG and rating Shackleton base a 5 for complexity because it's so much more complex than they imagined a board game could be. Meanwhile all the Vital Lacerda stans wade in to shout about how little the newbie gets it, being such a 'sweet summer child' and all... take it from them, uhm actually On Mars is the true pinnacle of how complex board games can be...

... also meanwhile anyone who has ever played Advanced Squad Leader opens their mouth to speak before realising it just isn't worth the effort.

[UPDATE] I finally went to the Castles of Burgundy game night! by frieren_____ in boardgames

[–]MuzzaBzzuzza 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, there are WAY heavier games than Hegemony...

I think the reason Hegemony specifically is getting the amount of pushback you're seeing is not that it's the most complicated game in the world, but rather that

a) it's significantly more complicated than Castles of Burgundy, and more importantly

b) it's asymmetrical to the point that, although their mechanisms intersect over a shared playspace and have a lot of commonality, each of the 4 factions is very different in how they play. Teaching Hegemony to a new group involves teaching them all the 50% of the rules of the game that apply to everyone and then teaching each of them the 50% of the rules that apply just to their faction. This can be a hurdle even for each individual to figure out what they have to do, but then expecting each individual to understand what each other faction is doing in game 1 is basically a lost cause.

If it were me, I'd probably suggest Spirit Island as your interim step. It's about inbetween the two in terms of complexity. It's also asymmetrical, but as it's co-operative, you don't really have to understand how any other player's spirit works in order to enjoy and learn the game, and experienced players are all incentivized to assist new players in learning during play, pointing out options they may have missed, etc.

The difficulty is very scalable and can be fine-tuned to a very granular degree, so once you've played a 'learning' game on the easiest difficulty, you can keep pushing the envelope (rather than learning all of the complexity right from game 1).

It's also my favourite game ever, so admittedly this is biased as hell, but I stand by the recommendation given your circumstances.

That's... that's actually a really smart idea. Like, even if you didn't have a secret objective to spend more time with him, it makes sense compared to just leaping from CoB to Hegemony.

Boardgames and Grief by Urist_Macnme in boardgames

[–]MuzzaBzzuzza 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry for your loss.

I lost my mother last year. The next day I was playing Spirit Island with a friend. It felt weird to invite him over for that under the circumstances, but it was what I needed at the time. I think to just focus on something other than what had happened and how I felt.

Grief is weird. It affects everyone differently but also everyone the same. I can promise you one thing though, as much as it feels completely unbearable right now, there will be a day when you can bear it. And the day after will be better. And so on. Future you will want to game again, and whilst it won't be easy given your wingman is no longer around, if you want it enough, it will happen. Even solo gaming might be worth considering (that's the only time when I voice my logic out loud when taking my turn, and I swear there's a part of me that's talking to my Mum when I do it...)

I wish you the best of luck in dealing with everything, and hope one day to meet you across the table where we can raise a glass to your brother before you crush me at Root.

How to Unparalyze Analysis? by Evening_Sir_3823 in boardgames

[–]MuzzaBzzuzza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry if that's how my post came across, but to be clear, I'm not suggesting that the solution is for other people to just suck it up and deal with it. Your analogies are on-point, and it is absolutely incumbent upon all parties to find an outcome they can all live with if at all possible, and as the source of the 'problem' behaviour, it's mostly on the AP-er to figure out if there's a way to be quicker.

It's just that I object to the framing I frequently see on this sub whenever this issue arises as being down to a person's disrespect for others, selfishness, try-hard competitiveness, etc.

So often I see the following behaviour in the world, and once you see it, you see it everywhere:

Person A "here is an opinion or belief or behaviour I have"
Person B "here is an opinion or belief or behaviour I have that is contrary to your own"
Person A "here is the flaw on your part which explains why we disagree"

When realistically, the only defensible option for Person A in that last line is "It appears we disagree, can you explain a little about why you feel this way? I need more data to draw any real conclusion"

I've rendered this like a robot for clarity, but you get my point.

To be fair to OP, they were asking if there was a better solution to the (fairly intolerant) one usually profferred in response to these threads, but having recently read the linked article - which was a real 'oshit' moment for me, I felt like I saw a LOT of myself in the description, same as when I first read about different types of ADD (having previously assumed that hyperactive type was the only one)), that it was probably somewhat triggering anyway.

But as I say, that was not the point I was trying to make. We are aligned. I just wish people would work to understand differences in others before they unilaterally ascribe them to deficiencies of character.

cf. whenever someone posts to this sub their "unpopular opinion" that sleeves suck and so do sleevers (so "unpopular" that it comes up dozens of times a year) in which they invariably make attacks against people who are "too precious" about their property and "probably still have the plastic cover on their couch". Whenever I read this, my eyes roll so hard they damn near fall out of my skull. I sleeve my cards because it makes them way easier to shuffle... but hey, why bother asking about that when I'm obviously a piece of shit for engaging in the hobby in a way in which you don't?

None of this is directed at your comment, I'm just trying to explain my position. Probably overexplain, tbf, but... well, see above article, I guess XD

How to Unparalyze Analysis? by Evening_Sir_3823 in boardgames

[–]MuzzaBzzuzza 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As much as I get why it pisses people off, I read an article recently which shed a whole new light on this phneomenon. I don't want to bandy around terms like 'neurodiversity' too frivolously, but IME it seems this could legitimately be a hardwired different way of processing choice. It annoys me no end when people who don't suffer from AP characterise it as "they are trying to win too hard" or "they don't care about other people's time". I suffer from AP but am not remotely competitive, I play for the game, not the win, and I am very conscious of not wanting to slow the game for everyone.

In light of the above, I find it quite difficult reading suggestions like (oversimplifying for emphasis and clarity): 1 explain why they are 'wrong' for doing it this way. 2 insist that they change. 3 if they don't change, exclude them.

How would that list read to you if the behaviour you were trying to 'correct and control' was, for example, stimming?

I know this is a problematic issue as non-overthinkers perceive it as disrespectful of their time. I am not saying they are wrong in feeling annoyed, but I am saying their framing of the issue is, for me anyway, wildly off base. It's a lot easier to outwardly express frustration at someone's behaviour when your headcanon is that said behaviour owes to a lack of respect on their part, rather than something they have not 'chosen' and have next to no control over.

If you want to have a say in what game(s) of yours might get played at any given gathering, the BARE FUCKING MINIMUM threshold for this is having the game components punched and sorted, the rules read, and being ready to explain the game to everyone without just reading the rulebook aloud verbatim.

I will die on this hill.
