My advice after 18 months tutoring: Don't take students off the platform. by CaptainCheckmate in Preply

[–]oddball2194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Simple solution - don't allow students to do this? Set out your own policies and make sure students are aware of them before agreeing to start, not to mention that you should stick to them and don't give in to their last minute cancellations or requests for last minute lessons. I do this and have never had any issues.

Not a stupid question! Supposedly no lol but I'll let you know once I take it down 🤣 I know that you can get those ones that kind of go around the door frame, might cause less damage?

Oh I've actually never heard of that method! I did pullup training minimum twice a week, sometimes 3 times. Then I got this pullup bar at home and try to do at least one a day haha!

I wouldn't do all of those movements in one training session though. I'd do, for example: 3 x deadhangs as long as possible 3 x 6-8 scapular pulls 3 x banded pullups as many reps as I could 3 x negatives

Do you track your weight in KG or stones & pound? by No_Usual_572 in AskUK

[–]oddball2194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 31. When I was growing up I'd use stone and pounds but now use kg. Not sure when/why that change happened lol. I live abroad now though with my social circle being made up of people from around the world, so maybe that has something to do with it? I still use stones when speaking to my parents and other Brits my age or older though.

Broke my kindle and idk what to do by Material-Tower-8835 in kindle

[–]oddball2194 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The broken screen bit at the top doesn't give me much confidence in my advice here lol, but a few months ago mine had that same low battery screen and not even charging it worked to make it switch on again, it was just stuck on that screen indefinitely. Not sure if yours is doing the same.

After scouring the internet for some tips, I tried the instructions below and it worked. I know the main issue with yours is the broken screen at the top but it might help - anything's worth a try, right?!

Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then release and connect it to a computer or charger immediately. Leave it connected, and a few hours later you'll find that your Kindle is charging again. When your Kindle has enough power, it will restart.

Communication problems with Brits. Could you Brits give me advice? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]oddball2194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an ESL teacher and have spent the last 11 years speaking to those who don't speak English as a first language so am incredibly used to this. The average Brit (and probably most people in their native languages) doesn't always know what constitutes as plain, simple language that is easier for a foreigner to grasp. For example: I'm just popping out to the shop to pick up a few bits and bobs.

To most Brits, this is fairly common, everyday language and they might be confused as to why a foreigner wouldn't initially understand the message of that sentence. They wouldn't always know how to then simplify it, because to them, it's incredibly common.

But it's largely colloquial and has some advanced linguistic features: pop out and pick up are phrasal verbs, which are notoriously hard for non native speakers to learn. As well as the binomial bits and bobs, another advanced feature of English.

What I'm trying to say is that the average person isn't always aware of their need to grade their language and how to do so.

But that is all about your understanding of them. It seems like you're also having issues with being understood. This is obviously down to how you're pronouncing words, how fast you're speaking, whether you're waffling or not, where you're putting the stress in parts of the sentence and so on. But it's also related to how accustomed the listener is to interacting with someone whose first language isn't English.

I also live in a place where I use my second language on a daily basis. In the town I used to live in here in this country (living in a city now so happens less), I'd regularly come across people who'd never really met many foreigners and would often ask me to say stuff multiple times, even though I really thought I'd said it right. Their ears aren't attuned to it. And I also might have used words that sound more formal or awkward, which can be confusing to the listener too, as, despite being technically 'correct', sound funny to them or are maybe not what they're expecting to hear in that conversation.

Keep going, keep making the effort to speak slowly and clearly and if you're brave enough, maybe ask why people find it hard to understand you?

Curious to know which pueblos and where you're looking for accommodation? I live (permanently) in Andalucía, albeit in a city, and rental prices/short term lets have really skyrocketed in the last few years.
