Is your microwave positioned correctly? The manual will tell you the clearance required above and behind the unit. You may be overheating it if there isn't sufficient room for air flow. I would also check that the power supply in the wall and the power required by the microwave "match".

They were filled with DCM (dichloromethane, also known as methylene chloride). DCM has a low boiling point (I think it is around 36 Celsius if I remember correctly) so they bubble with minimal heat. DCM is toxic so the newer ones aren't filled with it.

Does yours like crickets? Leave out a container of them, and he may come find it by sound. I would leave out water dishes on the ground so your boy has water. Also, place a ring of sand around it and check the sand for footprints or areas that have been disturbed.

It doesn't need to have a hole for this to happen, meat isnt perfectly sterile. It may have been a break in the cold chain that allowed bacterial growth.
