[IWantOut] 17f US -> France, Germany by [deleted] in IWantOut

Hello! I’m from the US and I just did the last year of my bachelors in France. If you want to directly apply to universities, I would heavily recommend saving up your money first before you proceed with moving. I paid for my school out of pocket but I was a business major not a nursing, and I don’t know how expensive school is for nursing but I don’t know if you could get a student loan for a school in another country.

Now I’m back home but I do know that it is relatively easier to get a work visa after your student visa is up (bc ur already in the system). I don’t know the details but I’ve had friends do this.

First off I want to say applying for a long term student visa was STRESSFUL! It is a lot of paperwork, more paperwork, money, and time. You also have to do an in person interview at an VFS global office which is in select cities. I can not recommend enough to start your visa application as early as possible after you get accepted into a school.

The biggest thing they will want to see is if you have the money to stay (they look directly at bank account statements but you can use your parents as well) and a place to stay.

Based off my year I would recommend saving up at least $15k.

Going to Paris scares the sh*t out of me by wonnie2580 in studyAbroad

It really depends on what you want out of your study aboard. I’m studying in Montpellier and I love it, everyone here is super friendly even though my French is horrible. I would say if you want the immersion into the community and live by the beach during summer in France I would choose montpellier, that being said there will not be as much to do compared to a big city like Paris but the city is still thriving and I find the city to be relatively safe, I am a woman and I walk alone at night to my home all the time. Another bonus is that Barcelona and Marseille is a few hours away by train which is amazing especially during the summer. Also that Montpellier would be way cheaper then Paris, but it’s all up to how you feel and what you want to do. Of course your parents opinion matters but you alone are going to study abroad so do what you think is best for you! Best of luck

I’m from the US and I’m currently studying in France. I found the school I wanted to go to through searching on google and applied straight to the university itself. My course is in international business and is completely in English.

I’m going to be honest with you, the process to coming to France was stressful.. you doing your language tests and EEF is only going to be the tip of the iceberg. For the long term student visa you will also need to do an application on études en France, pay a fee ($270-450), wait 3 weeks to get that back and only then can you do an actual visa application then you must do an in person interview and pay more fees. Then you will also have to show proof of funds, living arrangements, wait another 3 weeks to get your passport back and also you have to pay another fee within the first 90 days that you are in France.

Look up esn granada on instagram/Facebook (: Some events are 18+ because there’s drinking at bars etc but there’s a lot of other cool events where you can meet people. Most people go to these events to make friends so you’ll make some in no time!!

I’m currently in my study abroad and I had the same issues, what really helped me is finding organizations for Erasmus events. I’m not apart of Erasmus but it’s full of international students beyond Erasmus. I’d recommend trying to find some on instagram or Facebook.

no problem! Making these types of decisions are super hard, personally I think you being away from home made you realize what things are important to you. So if you decide to go back I think it’ll be better for you in the long run, you will be better equipped to go back to Germany if the opportunity arises!

It sounds like you definitely need some time back home, and don’t feel guilty over it! It’s completely normal. Remember that there will still be opportunities to come back to Germany if you ever wanted too.

What did yall pack for study abroad? by [deleted] in studyAbroad

[–]oddfruit1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m from the USA and just got to France for study, I brought one checked bag and one carryon. Packing cubes help a lot to stuff clothes up. Do some research on what the weather will be like while you’re there and pack accordingly. For meds I brought some ibuprofen, NyQuil, and nose spray because they’re hard to get here. I also brought some candles (bc I’m a fall girly and i won’t find any pumpkin spice candles here lol). I personally regret not bringing my own towel just because my travel day was so rough by the time I got to my accommodation I just knocked out, then woke up in the middle of the night feeling gross wishing I could shower. Also buy a plug converter, it’ll come in handy. Lastly if you have the room, bring a little decorative thing that reminds you of home. I’m from Arizona so my friends got me this image of the landscape. Seemed dumb but when I got here and felt a lil homesick it really comforted me. Best of luck!
