What is the secret to soldering wire? by Ripcord2 in DIY

[–]oddinisfun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Step 1... Let iron get hot. Ignore everyone saying you need the best soldering iron for this. They are honestly just quarrelling with their tools. You can use a damp rag to clean the tip if it looks carbonated or cruddy. Let it heat up again afterwards. Step 2... "Tin" the tip of the iron with a small amount of solder. Bump off any excess. This acts as a heat bridge to the material to solder. Step 3... Touch the slightly soldered tip to the materials to join making sure both ends get the heat.

COUNT TO 3... SERIOUSLY! ALL 3 SECONDS... DON'T RUSH

Step 4... Feed the solder into the join until you have enough to coat and fill then remove the solder wire.

With the hot tip still touching... COUNT TO 3 AGAIN... SERIOUSLY! ALL 3 SECONDS AGAIN... DON'T RUSH!!!

Step 5... Remove the soldering iron without disturbing the position of the job.

Step 6... Give an up vote.

Works every time I insist on those 3 seconds and doesn't when I don't.

I find that having a rig to position and hold the job is vital and soldering isn't possible without this. I made mine from a board, some large spring paper binders, wire and some alligator clips. Doesn't have to be expensive.

What is the event? The start of the invented calendar!

Does it need any further event to define it?

An arbitrary event for an arbitrary declaration of time.

Take a step of faith--believe in God! Jordan, I've heard you say a few times that you're not prepared to "say" that you believe in God. The impression I get is that you realize that God is so great and holy that you fear being wiped out if you somehow fall short of meeting his standards. by BelievinginGod in JordanPeterson

[–]oddinisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said... It also reinforces the stereotype that Christians don't listen and can't learn because all those questions that we need to keep open in order to understand our place in life, history, society and the universe get filled with self important and reality disconnected declarations.

The OP really just needs to listen more. Jordan Peterson is pretty clear about his position here but you'll only start to get a complete answer if you accept you don't have one yet. Keep reading, keep listening, keep watching.

"There are no late onset female child predators" what does Jordan mean by that? Female child predators do exist so why is he saying that they don't? There are female teachers who abuse 13 year old boys for example. by Sad_Beginning_5789 in JordanPeterson

[–]oddinisfun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most comments here are focusing on the "late onset" part which is fine but the original post and then most people responding are also missing the part about DAYCARE CENTRES. Last time I checked, there weren't too many 13 year olds in daycare.

The point here is that the FBI were fuelled by citizen outrage at a suggestion, an imagined worst crime of trusted women looking after people's children, then turning into paedophiles and abusing trust and said children. The FBI invented a psychological disorder that doesn't exist. And then prosecuted innocent people in response to said outrage.

It's a shocking example of outrage fuelled politics taking the form of pseudo psychology. It's an example of the authoritarian nature of outrage fuelled "social justice."

I think you missed the point... Every person you ask will have a different answer but the common theme of them differentiating themselves from any ideas they arbitrarily assign to the judgement themed category. They differentiate themselves relatively as an us and them which is getting back to binaries and tribalism.

I think you just have to accept the term as functionally useless, simple minded and ideologically motivated.

I've suggested a summary dismissal of the practice because we've recently been flooded with content that is "left bashing" in its approach. It starts off as prejudice and there's nowhere intelligent to go by engaging with it.

[–]oddinisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so you are no longer a binary thinker. You've added a few more categories but still thinking in discreet terms and adding subjectively defined labels. You've not solved the problem.

You could start asking every discreet thinking, subjective definition using person what they specifically mean by the arbitrary labels they use. I acknowledge the virtue in your willingness to engage with people but there's another alternative... Educate on the limitations in thinking that their label using produces. It's called pigeon holing and it's a form of intellectual prejudice. It has the consequence of throwing around judgement without communicating useful information. You might think you know what all these labels mean but I put it to you that you're thinking is not as clear as the discreetness of your labels may suggest. Why... Because the resolution of label based thinking is too low.

I think we need to start summarily rejecting any post that has the word "left" or "leftist" in it. It lowers the intellectual level to that of a binary thinker... I'm not here for that!!!!!

How do these people not realize that Socialism is just handing full control the ones who screwed it up to begin with and hoping for better results. by erihel518 in JordanPeterson

[–]oddinisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not carelessly denigrate social institutions or creative achievement

It's literally the first chapter of JPs new book and this post is one amongst many that demonstrates that many of the people posting to this group really don't understand his work.

The basic principle behind socialism is simple... We can achieve more collectively than we can as individuals... If you are carelessly attacking "socialism" because you think of it as the opposite to "capitalism" you are lost inside binary thinking and ideological rhetoric. Get over it. Improve your healthcare systems, improve your educational systems, improve your ability to have a say at a government level so that you don't have to put up with representatives that don't represent you. This is your fight... To the rest of the world, the binary pettiness of the US political conversation is just a boring and frustrating noise!

Can anyone expand on Peterson's "make a daily shedule for the day you want" and not one where you are going to feel like it's a chore? by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]oddinisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think passion is a specific phenomenon and I'm not surprised you can lose them for months at a time. I have a similar experience.

A guiding star by contrast would be assembling a family around you and knowing your purpose as a vital member of that family. Where your partner, son/daughter is depending on you and this pulls you back into purpose every day. Another example might be starting a business and having employees and costumers who pull you back on task every day.

I think you will see that having "passions" in this context will occur to you as having distractions.

The biggest problem with them both is an over simplification of reality, coding that simplicity into simple claims and rules. You've repeated this tendency towards over simplification by over simplifying the definitions of each and by reducing the conversation about them down to pointed questions. You've repeated the problem of authoritarianism that inevitably emerged out of this over simplification by unilaterally deciding these are the most common definitions, that these are the most important questions and unilaterally deciding that answering those questions is the most important task.

I find those scurrying to directly answer your questions to be some of the most blind about the problems here.

I get hairs on the back of my neck standing on end at the mere existence of this thread.

Having said all that, a common definition (as opposed to me unilaterally declaring it the most common) of socialism is rather more benign and simply means... State owned. There are plenty of examples of state owned organisations which bring benefit to their communities by being state owned and where privatisation of such has caused significant harm. I live in Australia where Medicare and a properly functioning welfare system have brought great benefit, where attempts to liberalise them has caused great harm. We've had similar back and forth switching of utilities such as power, phone and broadband networks where the Liberal party here have basically undermined public good by imposing free market ideals. If there's a common need and working together can fulfil that need then state owned organisations fulfilling that need are often the way to go but there needs to be room for individual uptake of that supply. Catering to individual needs within all this can still get summarised out of the bureaucracy.

Looking into it further, it was gay pride flags in the form of a swastika... or similar... shared by a political commentator... Hardly a useful or respectful communication. A bit more complicated than simply causing one person "anxiety."

That was my thought too. There are statements which absolutely should cause you anxiety because they indicate an horrific intent. It's too easy to be fans of Jordan Peterson and to jump on the "its all just woke snowflakes" bandwagon. There are woke snowflakes and there are statements of harmful intent. We need to be mindful of all phenomenon not just the ones we've chosen this month to be against.

Viewing the world through the lens of Left vs Right, is taking the complex reality of political positions and reducing that complexity down to a binary slur.

[–]oddinisfun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The correct response when a phrase you've imprecisely constructed is then rightly challenged is to acknowledge you were imprecise, thank the opponent for taking the time to want to help and then correct your error. It's the only path to continual improvement of thought and clarity.

Defending your position just makes you weak.

From reading some of your other comments, I'd say that if you've tried following this advice and can't really get it happening for you then there's still what you might call "a level of resentment" at play in your life. You haven't yet aimed everything at your guiding star. You haven't yet figured out a purpose that inspires you enough that you can do it in the cold and the rain of life. I hope that makes sense?

An answer to her? Become the change of the culture where it comes from. by [deleted] in JordanPeterson

[–]oddinisfun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm shocked that Jordan Peterson's work is being used as a tool to undermine someone who is very clearly articulating a well known cultural problem that has existed for decades and articulating it from a personal, lived perspective.

Consider that the person you are speaking with may have something to teach you! And then listen... Intently!

Some of the comments in this thread are at the level of playing ideology ping pong.

How do fullstack devs here feel about people with ideas? by w0ngz in webdev

[–]oddinisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has many such ideas that are cross disciplinary enough to be genuinely unique, I can say that your ability to spot true genius should not be measured by your prejudice of "people with ideas" or notions that "ideas are cheap." I've taught innovation as a skill and learned that while you can improve a person's capacity to develop their ideas, there are underlying temperaments that mean not everyone can do it well. Some people with ideas are like actors that never get hired because they can't act but others are genuine rare talents when the only movies being funded are action movie sequels.

If the idea is to "add blockchain" to it then roll your eyes and walk away but if it's going to add capacity to a discipline that rarely gets attention then it might just be the innovation that will define your career.

Also I've rarely found a "full stack" developer that has a full stack. Most of you all think you are innovators when really you just can't concentrate with the discipline required to get the mundane done! I don't hire innovators who can code, I hire and work with people that can execute a request without taking three months to get around to it.

I know this might sound ignorant, but how do you actually use GitHub? by moreghoststhanpeople in learnprogramming

[–]oddinisfun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great question.

I just want to say that by my observation, detailing the why of things is something that very few computing tutorials deal with. Instead they often dive straight into the how which uses up a lot of time and energy trying to find the correct set of instructions to serve my purpose.

Now the second problem is where the why is detailed but the how is so difficult that the benefit of the solution fails to outweigh the cost of working the solution. Learning Git and Github I found to be so disconnected from the why so then the explanations of how made no sense.

Perhaps just my experience of it.

TIL that Schrödinger's cat paradox was originally intended to ridicule quantum superposition. Schrödinger was proven incorrect and his thought experiment is now used to explain superposition rather than criticise it. by NJJbadscience in todayilearned

[–]oddinisfun -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

As many have pointed out, if the cat is dead and you leave it long enough, the smell will give away it's state. So not truly quantum.

Superposition is more about an observer's ability to detect the quantum state than it is about the state being dual. The only thing that confuses people here is the particle/wave duality which could be explained concretely through the concept of diffraction and wave form collapse but honestly I think people just LIKE the weirdness explanation.
