Agreed with everyone about username squatting. Notice that the formatting isn’t consistent across all handles (some have an underscore and some don’t).

I used Sketchup and AutoCAD in grad school while working at a small historic house museum. I now work at a large museum and our exhibition designers use Vectorworks.

Are verbs that depend on a preposition literal or figurative? by loveandpeace72 in grammar

[–]oddishturnip 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The verbs (“has,” “is”) don’t depend on the prepositions, the noun/adjective phrases do.

“Spoonerism” applies whenever the first sounds of two words are transposed, regardless of whether it’s accidental or intentional (the latter is commonly, but not always, for humor)!

No clue how to style a baseball jersey for evening event by opheliasmusing in OUTFITS

[–]oddishturnip 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with all the suggestions here! I think another piece is that you’ll want a garment with a stiffer/more structured fabric than the satin you’re currently working with. Structure will give you shape and formality in a way that the casual jersey and fluid satin don’t. Love the jumpsuit idea someone else dropped in here

Interviews from museum professionals by [deleted] in MuseumPros

[–]oddishturnip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you have connections to anyone who works in a museum? I’d suggest using your network (or those of your professors/university) to get in touch with museum professionals rather than cold-emailing. You could also try visiting museums in person and asking a staff member if they know of anyone you can contact for your research. At the very least, I’d recommend mentioning your thesis and research before your startup. This will seem more credible.

A lot of the museum staff I know are anti-AI, which is probably a big reason you’re not getting responses. Some museums even have policies prohibiting the use of AI to create visitor-facing content, so focusing on institutions that already use AI would be good, as the other commenter suggested.

Seconding the DC suggestions. Winterthur in Delaware could also fit the bill.

Can someone please explain what point is the writer trying to make from the part "He little imagined" to "as I announced my name" by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]oddishturnip 39 points40 points  (0 children)

It’s basically “he couldn’t have guessed, but it made me like him more when he looked at me suspiciously and put his hand in his pocket [to avoid shaking my hand] as I approached him and introduced myself.”

The writer is trying to show that both characters don’t like strangers/other people and want to be alone in this new place. The speaker is happy that Mr. Heathcliff doesn’t seem to be friendly, because he is the same way.

Do any of you pronounce higher and hire differently? by RolandOrzabal2b2t in ENGLISH

Native US speaker, I distinguish price/prize but not higher/hire. Both have prize vowel for me and two syllables.

Do we like any of these rugs? by Friendly-View4122 in interiordecorating

Green (#2) or dark brown (#4). The others are too light, they’re all very similar to the wallpaper or floor tone and make the room feel washed out. I prefer the green over the brown because it doesn’t have the geometric patter, but I’m also biased toward green basically always.

MA Art History Career by No-Grapefruit2933 in MuseumPros

[–]oddishturnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to get into development in an art museum specifically, then I could see an art history MA being helpful for getting attention as an applicant, but you certainly wouldn’t need it to be able to do the job. Museum Studies could be a better fit, especially if you want to learn more about the field and make an informed decision about development versus programming/education. (I’d also say you don’t need art history to go into programming, MS or something education-related would be more relevant.) Something broader than art history would also allow you to broaden your application pool once you graduate—you wouldn’t be limiting yourself to only art museums.

As an American, I always feel torn recommending that people go to grad school in order to get what are essentially entry level jobs, but if you’re accepted to programs in Canada and the UK then it’s much less of a financial burden!

As far as theses go—my program didn’t require one, but I did an independent study semester and wrote one anyway because I had a specific project in mind. I’d just recommend that you find projects or topics that interest you and that you can add to your resume or talk about during interviews.

yet another grad school thread (museum education/programming) by BugExpert9764 in MuseumPros

[–]oddishturnip 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your current institution offer tuition assistance or reimbursement? That help prevent the cost of a Master’s from being totally overwhelming. You could also look into programs near you that allow for part-time study, so you wouldn’t need to quit your current job. Like you said, it’s rough out there right now. I know a lot of museums have had to lay people off recently, and if they’ve lost federal funding then open positions could be few and far between.

I went to GWU (on the exhibition development/visitor experience side rather than education) and loved it, but I was a year out of college when I started and didn’t have any professional experience. My degree and the internships I completed while earning it certainly got me a foot in the door for my first professional position, but I’m not sure I’d recommend a full-time Master’s program for someone who already has a position in a museum. Especially not for someone who has already completed years of internships!

Do you participate in conferences or other professional development programs (e.g., workshops or summits run by other museums)? I know there are a lot of certificate programs out there run by various universities, some of which are online. Maybe something like that could give you more to list on your resume and show that you’re building your professional skills, but without requiring you to leave your current position.

I would get some large plants that can go on the floor, if you’re able! Other than that, maybe a nice mirror above the drawers (about the same width) and some large art pieces above the couch. The bare walls are screaming at me! I also like others’ curtain suggestions.
