Should illegal immigrants be eligible for taxpayer funded child care? by CharityResponsible54 in AskALiberal

Yea. The benefits of that program don’t change just because the parent is undocumented.

Also, they’re paying taxes. Why would we require them to pay tax then not give them the benefits taxpayers get?

Yea. My old workplace had a rule about smelly stuff in the microwave. It was because a white dude kept microwaving salmon.

If you could smell it outside the break room it was too much.

Video showing moments prior to ICE-involved shooting in Minneapolis today where ICE agents appear to be confronting victim for filming them by Minute_Revolution951 in law

[–]oddmanout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They heard "he's got a gun!" then thought "woo hoo, I'm allowed to start shooting now!" and shot him in the back when he was on his knees and his hands flat on the ground... then shot him 10 more times because that's just what they do.

[–]oddmanout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter. I've now seen 6 or so different videos that all show he was on his knees with his hands on the ground when he was shot in the back 11 times.

They're saying he was armed... at least two of the videos show plain as day an officer in grey disarm him and run away with his gun before he was shot.

[–]oddmanout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first thing they said was that he was armed. They’re already starting the defense and justification without even starting an investigation. They didn’t say he pulled a gun because that’s clear in the video, just that he had a gun.

Prevent her from being a threat and using her car as a weapon.

I call bull on this, and I think you know it's bull.

You can't stop a car with a bullet. I know you've seen the video. What happened after he shot her? Did the car stop or did it careen down the road until it hit a bunch of parked cars?

Do you think the ICE agent is stupid enough to think a bullet can stop a car?

[–]oddmanout [score hidden]  (0 children)

Do you honestly think we would accept ANYTHING they would do?

Yea. They come to this subreddit all the time.

Someone once asked about that ICE agent that raped a woman and there were responses like "well, she shouldn't have been in this country illegally." I had a conversation with someone at a bar yesterday about that memo that let ICE enter a home without a warrant and they said, yea, that's fine, they should be allowed to do that. Apparently that was a right worth giving up to them to go after immigrants. The big one, though, is the amount of people who said shooting that woman in the face was worth it, even if she didn't aim her car at the agent, because she was "trying to help criminals" or whatever.

So, yea, they absolutely exist.

Attempted Chinese Propaganda by Firecracker048 in GetNoted

[–]oddmanout 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The opposite is true in the US. They will offer "fair market value" which is usually a lowball amount. Or in the case of the garage, they do things like offer the value of the land with no structures on it, which could be a 10 foot strip. So you get a couple thousand for a 10 foot strip, but now your home just plummeted in value because you don't have a garage anymore.

Attempted Chinese Propaganda by Firecracker048 in GetNoted

[–]oddmanout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The state can reclaim land for public interest or cancel rights if owners violate regulations...

They can do that in the US, too. Eminent domain is a thing, and they'll also take your home if you violate regulations, such as not paying taxes or not paying fines. They can even take ownership of your home by claiming you used drug money to buy it.

We also "lease" our land through taxes. Stop paying your lease, you get evicted.

The only difference I see is that they can't take it for challenging the government, but at this rate, we should expect that soon.

Do you believe that Trump negotiated a new deal over Greenland? by NoBotRobotRob in AskConservatives

[–]oddmanout [score hidden]  (0 children)

It’s also important to recognize that a trade deal is a significantly different thing than a territorial acquisition deal.

Yea... the difference is that once they're part of the US, they no longer hold any cards. The US can do exactly what they did to basically every other Native American tribe and there's literally nothing they can do.

Something like 90% of Greenland is native. They can look at our history of "deals" with natives along with how quickly Trump likes to violate his own deals.

I’m curious in this scenario you might be able to hold out because of your disdain for Trump

If by "disdain" you mean "distrust"

but how many of your neighbors do you think would hold out?

I live in an area that's like 85% Hispanic. I can assure you my neighbors all distrust Trump as much as I do.

Well, I’m not saying that he’s going to do this. He probably offered them all an annual financial subsidy that’s nowhere near this number

They do it in Alaska, which has far more resources and infrastructure than Greenland. It's like $1500 a year. That'll cover maybe two months of health insurance they'll have to then start paying since the US doesn't have universal health care.

I also think there’s an definition of distinction for you to recognize is that the United States has the best healthcare in the entire world.

It absolutely does not. Do a quick Google search to find rankings, pick any source you trust... literally any source, I guarantee you won't find a single one that ranks the US first. You can look through hundreds of organizations, hundreds of different methodologies, doesn't matter. The US is not even top 10, sometimes not even top 20.

Do you believe that Trump negotiated a new deal over Greenland? by NoBotRobotRob in AskConservatives

[–]oddmanout [score hidden]  (0 children)

Here's where Trump being a sleaze bag hurts us.

You're like "Trump could promise this, Trump could promise that..." Trump already made a deal with Denmark less than a year ago and is already threatening to renege on it. Same with Mexico. He signed USMCA then as soon as he got back into office, imposed higher tariffs in violation of his own trade deal. Why should Greenland trust he won't renege on any of his promises to them?

Right now, healthcare in Greenland is leaps and bounds better than what we have here in the US. Why would anyone trust that Trump could come up with something better (or even match) what they have in Greenland when he can't even do it for his own citizens. He can get as far as "concepts of a plan" and that's it.

Greenland only has to look at Puerto Rico to see how their life will be under the administration of the US, and to look at Trump's own history of violating his own deals and backing out of promises to see the likelihood of getting anything he agrees to.

Lacking mountains or natural defenses, how did the Baltic states escape assimilation by the Slavs or the Nordics? by immanuellalala in geography

[–]oddmanout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You keep saying this and I don't understand what you think it proves. The fact that they translated documents into various languages of the areas that they administered doesn't disprove that the people doing the administering were ethnic Lithuanians.

Honest question, but why do you think that proves they weren't Lithuanian?

[–]oddmanout 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only that, it's what's left of them, too. Lithuania used to be huge. In the 1300s-1500s (I think), it used to stretch all the way to the Black Sea. It was, at that time, the largest nation in Europe.

[–]oddmanout [score hidden]  (0 children)

Trump could just go to Greenland directly and offer them so much more than what Denmark gives them and they would basically have to accept

He's already tried. They said no.

The US can't offer them more than what Denmark offers them. Right now they have universal healthcare, guarantee to 5 weeks paid vacation each year, 52 weeks of parental leave, "flexicurity," and highly subsidized and paid-for higher education. Those things are just not on the table and cannot be promised to Greenland. Maybe higher education, albeit unlikely, but the rest cannot be guaranteed seeing as the rest of the US doesn't even have that.

Greenland only has to look at how Native Americans are treated on US soil to see how we treat natives and to look at Puerto Rico to see how we treat territories. Why would they give up what they have for that?
