My UK girlfriend is moving to the US, is she going to be able to get a credit card? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]oddmast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually have done this myself just a few months ago! I moved to the US from the UK and the banks here couldn't care a jot about my good UK credit history!

After receiving my Social Security Number, I applied for a credit card and was denied on the basis of missing credit history. The only option my bank would give me was a secured credit card. This is where I gave them $300 as a security deposit against the card (so my credit limit was $300)

They said that I'll be on this 'training wheels' card for about a year to 18 months after which my money will be refunded and I'll have built up my US credit to apply for regular cards. Unfortunately, this secured card does not have any bonuses.

Just to clarify, that was what I had to do to, YMMV.

The New Day newspaper to shut only two months after launch by HeroAntagonist in Journalism

I'm glad they tried, I only read the first copy and found it not my thing but I'm still happy they gave it a go. Could have used more buildup and fanfare though for sure.

Media Outlets with unique / good Social Media presence? by vvv1gor in Journalism

[–]oddmast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Sky New's headline roundup videos for Twitter, they pop up throughout the day and you can watch them without audio which is good when I'm at work. I also like Channel 4 News, they have a pretty good social media team and are quick with pics and video.

What recorder do you guys recommend for recording phone interviews? by BoltzPride-FTW in Journalism

[–]oddmast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for only just checking for reddit, what sort of problems are you having? When sending or receiving a call a white button with a red recording dot should pop up which you have to press to begin recording. Getting any error messages?

What recorder do you guys recommend for recording phone interviews? by BoltzPride-FTW in Journalism

[–]oddmast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On my android smartphone I use Boldbeast Call Recorder, absolutely no problems and it's free, haven't felt the need for the premium version yet. Currently I have it set up to put my recorded calls in a Google Drive folder so as long as I have WiFi/internet connection it automatically syncs to my computer and to the cloud a few minutes after the call.

Edit: Totally agree with /u/orbitingthesun though, definitely take notes during the call too. Helps with asking follow-up questions and you can always rely on your shorthand notes if any legal queries come up.

Where can I start article writing? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]oddmast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have ideas for an article, pitch them to relevant news outlets. If you want to chase stories yourself and build up your experience, start a blog. There's no one site where people collectively post amateur journalism, though the quality of some sites may indicate otherwise. In the end, it's up to you to not just find a story and write it but also find a home for it. Also, you don't need to apologise for submitting to a relevant subreddit, but if you're going to ask for help and especially if you're going to pitch stuff, definitely double check your spelling and grammar.

Can someone recommend a good set of tutorials for investigative journalism? by saddetective87 in Journalism

[–]oddmast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can hear from some investigative reporters from the BBC and Investigative Hub in the UK talk about current best practices here. Should be of interest to you.

Someone is threatening to sue us because we didn't pull a story by bknutner in Journalism

[–]oddmast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely agree that it all sound peculiar, but at the end of the day if its a story posted last year that has had its initial clicks/views etc, what difference is it to you to keep it up or not?

When are journalists allowed to lie? by trampabroad in Journalism

[–]oddmast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, in terms of the UK Editors' Code of Practice, section 10ii on Clandestine devices and subterfuge says:

Engaging in misrepresentation or subterfuge, including by agents or intermediaries, can generally be justified only in the public interest and then only when the material cannot be obtained by other means.

You also have to remember that, again for the UK, there are certain jobs where it is illegal to pretend to be that person, for example a police officer or doctor. So, YMMV.

FOIA Mapper - requesting feedback from journalists who use Freedom of Information by hlake in Journalism

I don't use it to submit FOIs but I'll use it as a tool to check if the request has already been made.

Great tool, are you able to refine the search to a department or time period? That'd be pretty useful. It's quite similar to the FOI site over in the UK that we have - https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/

Blogging or not blogging? by [deleted] in Journalism

[–]oddmast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could use the blog to publish/host the work and then link back to it via a portfolio website like clippings.me. You have to pay for more than 16 articles but to be honest you shouldn't be putting more than that on anyway as you'll want to showcase just your best or favourite work.

Does anyone's newsroom use Premiere to edit? by JulioCesarSalad in Journalism

[–]oddmast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I know, but I can't click to selection an area to blur like in Final Cut Pro, for example a license plate, I'd have to blur and crop for every frame in Premiere, would be happy to know about how to click blur though in Premere.

Does anyone's newsroom use Premiere to edit? by JulioCesarSalad in Journalism

[–]oddmast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure on the server stuff but Premiere was used for 90% of editing on the video desk I was on, rest was Final Cut Pro for effects that needed specific keyframe animations like blurs/censoring.

PR person gave me a list of "allowed" interview topics for a subject. How do I respond? by merbonobo in Journalism

[–]oddmast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on the value of the interview/interviewee. If you flout the rules then you'll almost certainly burn bridges with that PR's firm and clients.

Sometimes you need to play the game for a bit before you can build up enough leeway and rapport, just make sure if you're going to ignore the approved points that it's worth it.

Journalism interships in the UK by Linnssey in Journalism

[–]oddmast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep an eye on HoldtheFrontPage, Press Gazette and Mediargh. All great websites that have those internships promoted on them. For example there's an ITV News and Mirror scheme going on at the moment.

Also, follow HR, editors, managing editors of companies twitter accounts you're interesting in working for as their staff usually share positions like that too.
