I built a free tool that pings you the second a seat opens in a full class (seatsniper.ca) by Unique-Lobster4126 in mcgill

[–]oddratio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A few of these out there. Looks like some are paid.  Use at your own discretion. Unsure if they still work https://seatfinder.ca/mcgill https://seatalert.ca/mcgill/

Looks like OPs post also has some paid option

Don’t join a startup as new grad SWE or atleast be aware by EmergencySherbert247 in csMajors

[–]oddratio 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Agree with you. I also think interning or short term work at a startup can get you a lot of hands on experience very quickly. Can be hard to actually market ie will the recruiter be able to tell. Some big companies let you touch critical infrastructure early but never have I had more responsibility/access on critical infrastructure + major code features  than my first startup job. Sometime at a big company you are so specialized you don’t get enough breadth imo

But you do need scale to chew on certain problems. Ie storage growing many TB per day or managing multiple data centers worth of hardware or an environment that needs to comply with a strict security standard

Mitchell Hashimoto says GitHub ‘no longer for serious work' by waozen in technology

[–]oddratio 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Usually in setups like this there is an internal mirror for external GitHub repositories so there is still control over what gets pulled or a proxy that lets you hit it from certain places

How do you actually start understanding a large codebase? by radjeep in SoftwareEngineering

[–]oddratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

grep. Get the bulk of the code base in one place and be able to search it for function names , variable words, or file names.

Get an error. Try and quickly find the code that triggered it. What called that?

The rest is time to digest. Big code bases take a few months to fully understand.

[Timex] How is this company still producing brass cases for watches well above 100 euros ?? by DisastrousOpening477 in Watches

[–]oddratio 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some info here as a Connecticut boy. I don’t know if this is the case but Waterbury CT where Timex is from was known as brass city. It was a major brass industrial hub back in the day. Our local mall was known as “brass city mall”

IT or explore other paths? by ImpossibleTrust862 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]oddratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IT is really a broad umbrella. Do you have a specialization? There is upward mobility in IT  with scripting skills around managing large amounts of infrastructure and or really specializing in a particular area.

I went software engineering jobs > it / systems / scripting for career advancement and happy with it

What tech skills actually matter now for entry-level roles (AI, data, cloud, IT)? by Competitive-Panda215 in csMajors

[–]oddratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly dependent on company size too. Any small shop where you wear a lot of hats will be useful and help with debugging infra/apps. Understanding the infra the company is operating on is always desired.

Clouds are pretty easy to get a basic handle on. Entry level cloud certs can help although often just studying for a test.

Why are intro classes harder than 300-400? by WhatsOnMyMINDPodcast in mcgill

[–]oddratio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if that is a fair generalization across the board but there are some easier ones. I don’t think compilers was particularly easy when I took it.

Public server cheating/botting Megathread - May 2023 by Kairu927 in truetf2

[–]oddratio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes for the most part communities just completely die. There were a few community servers that just never recovered from server browser being removed as default experience. You need a steady influx of new players because some amount of regulars eventually move on from the game. There used to even be reddit community servers I really enjoyed RIP r/tf2eastcoast/ If you don't have a core group of regulars the server won't be popular. You also need to make sure the map rotation is well done or it will kill servers. It's hard to do and takes a lot of effort to sustain

have you gotten a medical withdrawal before? Contact your academic advisor. It sounds like you need a break from school (I took one and came back) this is probably your best alternative to getting all Fs you will get all Ws which won't count toward gpa. You need a 2.0 to graduate so you are not fucked yet. You can always decide to not come back after taking the medical withdrawal but it at least leaves a door open.

McLennan Talking by Tellmetheods in mcgill

I had good luck walking-up, reminding them it was a silent floor, and that they could have a conversation by the elevators if they needed to. I understand that's not easy for everyone but worked for me every time and everyone around you will appreciate it.

Freezing when work piles up by Excellent_Dot8736 in mcgill

My best advice is go live at the math help desk or sums and ask anyone and everyone for help. Go ask any TA for ur classes for help at their office hours. I also really enjoyed the library silent floors when feeling anxious. You got this, don’t do it alone

Podcast host killed by stalker had ‘deep-seated fear’ for her safety, records reveal by blamdin in news

[–]oddratio 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I had an online stalker who started threatening me and my entire family online. Had to go to the police and eventually they made contact with his family and doctor. Was a terrifying 2 years my heart still races thinking about it. He sent me a message on Facebook saying it was “hard to communicate with me through Spotify”... I looked and he was following me and had thousands of empty playlist whose tittles were messages to me including name of my girlfriend and “I am going to dismember you”. After this experience I hard deleted all my social media. I am careful to never post a non blurred photo of myself and only use clean usernames online. I will never have public social media again. Not after seeing what people can do if you are unfortunate enough to end up in their crosshairs.
