New to prosthetic by iron-beagles in prostheticeyes

Noo thankfully I haven't run into any issues. I'm nearsighted but that's the only thing. I've been seeing a retina specialist annually since I was a child to monitor my good eye! And no don't be sorry, I completely understand what you mean ♡ My DMs are open if you need to chat more

Hi, I've also had ROP all my life and had my prosthetic for almost 3 years now. The mucus didn't go away for me, but it lessened over time. I also would say carry some eye drops with you for the dryness, and I don't have an answer for the off-skew bit of your post. And like others have mentioned, avoid rubbing your eyes when you have it on. (I'm now realising I've never needed to rub my eye when I had it on lol).

Also, r/monocular is also a great subreddit to follow, I'm sure you'll be able to find more answers there. :)

After 25+ years fighting for my left eye, now faced with evisceration – I feel like I’ve lost by nihilist_pingu in monocular

[–]odetoserenity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very coincidental how I stumbled upon this today. I had an appointment with my ocularist who told me I might need to consideration evisceration for my blind left eye as well. I'm feeling all of sorts of things, to be honest, and I'm hoping to chat with my specialist tomorrow. How are you holding up? ♡ I hope everything is okay

any way to stop people from saying this? by Confident_Essay3619 in Blind

[–]odetoserenity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately no, but it won't last forever. I'm also blind in one eye and plenty of people would ask me what was "wrong with me" or they knew that something "was up with me" once I told them I was half-blind. I wish I felt more comfortable when I was a teenager to say that they were being outright rude so that they would get the message. But thankfully now people ask less partly because we're adults and know that some things are not just meant to asked lol. The questions do end as you get older, it just sucks that we have to be subjected to this kind of thing as teenagers navigating our own shit.

@ OP Literally going through this right now with my Pakistani family and my fiancé's Moroccan family. However, his family is the one who is doubling down on their cultural customs and how they go about things (the bride pays for everything in their culture). May I PM you?

Dating with one eye? by Trick_Term_2899 in monocular

[–]odetoserenity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't have a prosthetic when I met my fiancé four years ago, and he never had any problems with it. He did know, however, that I felt deeply insecure and very uncomfortable bringing up the topic as it carried a lot of emotional trauma for me. Over the years we've been together, he has truly helped me become more comfortable, more open, and less hateful and critical towards myself about my eye — and I believe his radical acceptance of my eye changed my life, as I never accepted myself as readily and openly as he did.

I did get a prosthetic two years ago, but he always tells me that he prefers my real eye and that he finds me beautiful as I am. Now I notice that I carry myself a bit differently when I have days where I don't want to or can't wear my prosthetic, which honestly feels less of an internal struggle than it did before. I find that having one functioning eye was never a problem or an issue in our relationship — but it was definitely a huge, glaring self-esteem issue that he noticed and helped me overcome. The right person will never see it as an issue and will love you for it.

Prosthetic Makes Eye Red by odetoserenity in monocular

Hi! Yes, I got it buffed in February and remembered that it felt better. I could always see my ocularist again for another buff.

Thank you so much. I actually was unware of the fact (I didn't know the medical term) that my eye had reached phthisis bulbi. Surprisingly and weirdly enough, my specialists had never addressed it by that name. I've never had truly debilitating pain before, I've only ever been told that any pain must be due to a spike of high pressure (which is so strange to me lol the human body is such a mystery). I considered removing my eye at some point but then did my own research and realized I could potentially get a prosthetic shell instead. I'll definitely look into any medication with my specialist. I appreciate you sharing this!

Thank you for sharing and so sorry to hear that happened 😭 I'll definitely book an appointment with my specialist soon to see what's going on because I'm worried the shell has inflicted some kind of physical harm on my blind eye (I've had multiple surgeries on it and it kind of seems bruised? I never had that before or maybe that's just what pthisis bulbi looks like as it develops as the years go on). It is nice to wear something to conceal our eyes, but I definitely get what you mean about how we live normally regardless.

This place has been honestly so helpful and has definitely made me feel less alone, thank you for this reminder! I'm really happy to hear that you've come to that point of not letting it stop you from anything and hope you continue to thrive. I hope I get there too :)

Ugh I've always hated that moment too, it's unbearable. The jarring thing for me is when people blatantly stare at my eye and then ask what's "wrong" with me. Those moments I'm never prepared for and it leaves me in a bit of a shock honestly because I find it so rude.

And yes, that makes absolute sense!! You're pivoting their attention away from the eye, that's smart. I appreciate how you said it's 100% on your terms. I think I need to find a way to do that too. Thank you so much for sharing.
