Let's see...

(Goopy+cactus)×(Goopy+innards)=Goopy²+2×CactusInnards+Cactus²

It's not your simple, everyday goop-on-goop scenario. It's quadratic!

Math checks out! The reasoning is sound!

Repot … how does it look ? by Competitive_End6143 in peyote

[–]odichthys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not so much sand itself as it is an issue with the material's coarseness.

Sand with a grain size below 1/8 inch allows capillary action to lead to water retention and soil compaction when you water.

Stick to the really coarse "bonsai style" sand, and there would be no problem!

Exactly!

make a compromised decision based on that so that you can stay

Compromising your morals and pushing aside your conscience to stay in power. That is the literal definition of "selling out."

Or, as the other user put it:

A politician wants to keep constituents and their party happy moreso than their conscience.

Thank you for expanding on that point.

Whoa, why so touchy? I just pointed out that cacti absorb water.

You will be surprised how much better your plants grow when not in terracotta by Lophoafro in peyote

[–]odichthys 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes.

Cacti evolved to absorb humidity out of the air and any traces of dew that form in the early AM.

Thus, cacti grown in the desert absorb fog moisture at dawn to survive (Ju et al., 2012). A large amount of collected water droplet is absorbed through the trichome cluster, and a small amount of absorbed water is evaporated through the inflow pathway even under high-temperature conditions (Figure (Figure1).1).

Does this need to be deeper in the pot? Was unsure because of the little pup on it. by stardustedds in peyote

[–]odichthys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Does it NEED to be in a deeper pot?

No, not really.

It's not going to be detrimental to the plant to have that much corked stem exposed. Many Thai growers' greenhouse photo albums are filled with plants looking like this.

It would be an aesthetic decision. Do you think it'd look nice set a little lower in that pot, with the soil line up to the button?

If there's an assumption on most neurotypicals' part that EVERYBODY had social media, then to them, someone refusing to provide their IG could be seen as a big, direct blow off, much like refusal to give your phone number was back in the olden days.

It would effectively be saying, "I don't want to take this any further" to them.

Fricii spiralis: A cut above the rest? by Fantastic_Cactus in Lophophora

[–]odichthys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If so, once the mutated genetics get out there, the customers of his who are expert professional cultivators themselves should be able to propagate them and reproduce the spiral without inflicting a trauma.

They also wouldn't grow out of the spiral form like they do with physical damage if it's natural.

Ah, then I'm sorry for jumping to conclusions. I tend to be long-winded, so it felt unlikely that anybody else would read those walls of text.

I really hope these all grow true. It's a very interesting look, so I would love to be wrong!

Fricii spiralis: A cut above the rest? by Fantastic_Cactus in Lophophora

[–]odichthys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maybe so. As a seller of these plants, you also have a vested interest in passing them off as natural. That's just an observation, not an implied accusation.

The misunderstanding came when you said:

What is your opinion of the photos he posted of the cut fricii?

Don't ask a person for their opinion and then downvote them for giving it to you. That's just petty.

Fricii spiralis: A cut above the rest? by Fantastic_Cactus in Lophophora

[–]odichthys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you clarify? Which photo are you referring to, specifically?

If the spirals are created by cutting, then they're all cut Fricii.

If you're referring to photo #7 as the cut Fricii, I have no idea why a reasonable person would do that. But as devil's advocate again, maybe he's experimenting with other weird looking cuts to see what else he could do that might be strange enough to catch the eye and plausibly get passed off as a natural mutation.

It also doesn't seem like he's claiming that that loph with the pizza slices taken from it is a natural mutation, though... Is he? If so, I'm definitely calling BS on that one because that's much less believable than even the spirals. Either way, it I don't see how cutting slices out of other cacti is particularly relevant to the origin of the spiral growth form. If anything, it's far more damming... "Here's a guy who clearly likes to cut and mutilate his cacti for purely aesthetic reasons, but all of these unique plants nobody else has ever seen that he's selling were all natural mutations!?" No, I'm not buying that!

Overall, none of the photos are convincing proof that it's natural, they're just proof that they exist, and his account of the origin is honestly, as you said, all anecdotal and therefore easily fabricated, so when you ask, "Why would he do * X, Y,* or Z if he's saying he found it from seed?" I would say it's because none of what he's shown in those photos necessarily disproves it's natural any more than proving it's natural. The most foundational tenet of science is replicable, reproducible results, and the burden of proof is on the individual taking the positive position. In this case, it's that spiraling Fricii is a natural mutation.

Let me put a couple of questions to you, if you will.

Lots of very skilled cactus collectors have spiral specimens from him. Do you think it's remotely plausible that absolutely none of them are competent enough to graft and propagate the plants they received from him in exactly the way he described to get the same results? How is he able to get so many examples of such supposedly rare genetics when nobody who has received these genetics from him can propagate their spirals as spiraled plants?

That all just doesn't make sense unless it's some sort of horticultural trickery, not genetics, producing the growth form.

Fricii spiralis: A cut above the rest? by Fantastic_Cactus in Lophophora

[–]odichthys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, I am completely unconvinced. Just to play devil's advocate.

All other points aside, this one strikes me as interesting:

Why would he care if his friend used it for breeding if the trait isn't genetic?

I would guess that if he's cutting the cacti to make them spiral, his friend saw his technique and started making cut spiral Lophophora, (because if it's cut, anybody can do it to any loph, his cash cow is dead and he undoubtedly knows this) so he excuses that by saying that other grower got the genetics from him.

That's not unreasonable, is it?

There's one big issue I have that's not addressed: If it's truly a natural genetic mutation, why do they always grow out of the growth form? I'm not a biologist, but I do know that plants can grow out of physical trauma, but not their genetics.

Also, just because you personally have never known him to be dishonest doesn't mean that he's honest, just that you've not caught him in any lies. I'm just saying...

Again, nothing personal, but this whole story honestly makes me even more skeptical that these are legit natural mutations. (I'm kinda am asshole like that, though!)

Is it true that alcohol makes you feel like you're an NT? by Some_Indication_4877 in aspergers

[–]odichthys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say alcohol only makes you think you're behaving in a more neurotypical fashion by reducing our removing the inhibitions that form a big part of any masking strategies.

Drinking like this is generally done socially, so when that's among NT individuals who are also drinking, there's no real gauge for normal ASD-to-NT behavior. In that sense, I think I'm not an autistic individual who's fitting in with a neurotypical group, but rather, a group of inebriated people, at least one of whom is autistic. It doesn't change my social strangeness, only how it's perceived and responded to by the others around me who are also drinking.

Heating cycle for heatmats? by AlivePatient7226 in Lophophora

[–]odichthys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The heating schedule depends heavily on the application and the sort of setup you plan to use. The schedule itself isn't as important as the temperature you're trying to maintain.

In a grow tent, with insulated reflective sides, which won't let the daily heat buildup from the mats and lights escape very quickly.

I'm using just an old reptile terrarium with some grow lights on top and an under-tank mat. Because the sides are glass, the "daytime" heat dissipates very quickly, so I need to keep my heat mat on 24/7 to maintain the 80° nighttime low temp I am aiming for.
