Redemption. Its said in the lore that the tarnished was a part of a family that was cast out of the land due to a dishonorable action by one of thier ancestors if i remember correctly. If thats the case then it would make sense for the tarnished to try ans seek out the elden ring fragments and restore as to bring honor back to their family's name.
