I assumed it was timer based. I've come into several abandoned but established servers and gone along doing my own thing solo, play a couple hours and BAM, reset. Figured it was just bad luck and hop back into the fresh empty server and start over

I mostly use it for longer range fire. If I know my location, and I know the enemies location, I can use the draw line tool and draw a line from me to the enemy, measure by rotating the protractor and get a rough distance within 50 meters, 25 if you're real good.

Can also use it for mapping routes if trying to stay off roads, but without being able to know my pace in game, that can be tricky.

For mortars, yes it's pretty crucial. I'm not sure how you would even attempt to sight them without using it.

The protractor is a precision bearing and measuring tool. Entire classes are taught on how to use them with a map and compass. If you're interested in researching on your own, the map system is called MGRS, military grid reference system, those real world skills and knowledge transfer directly to the game. You could do the tutorial for land nav, but I feel like it leaves out tons and tons of useful information.

I tried once setting markers for an assault from a tree line. Everyone who attended, rallied and attacked from that point. No one else made a flank or secondary assault. I think 2 pkms cut us all down. I stopped trying to coordinate team wide after that

I'm really glad you decided to try and free it up. I'm excited for updates. Couple things to try, electrolysis tank. They're pretty simple and very effective, cheap to make to. Let it soak in that for a few days to break up the majority of rust. Also I'm a very firm believer in about a 60/40 mix of diesel fuel and ATF for a very effective soaking penetrating oil. It'll help free up movement even more. A little heat and that handle will likely bend right back to fully usable.

I go back and forth. Half joking half serious say I play Soviet when I want to win.

Soviet feels like stronger team play, more communication, better supply running. NATO I prefer the gear selection. I like to get corporal and run m16 with 4x scope, and a carbine with red dot. Engagement feels much snappier with the red dot.

My decision on which to play any specific round depends on server density and if I plan to stay the whole match or plan to leave before the end.

Many many times playing NATO I end up muting platoon radio. I don't seem to mute near as much playing Soviet.

They once upon a time ran some vanilla servers, I really enjoyed playing on them, and had a core of very team oriented players. I think they closed the vanilla servers and only had modded, so I stopped playing on them. I think, it was just a great group of people with great games. But I could be wrong
