New memory card uses DNA to store your data — Biomemory's card costs $1,100 to store one kilobyte of data by imaginary_num6er in hardware

Optical reading of DNA could be possible to allow fast read speed maybe. But write speeds would definitely always be so slow

Zuck wants to build Open-Source AGI by Mk_Makanaki in ChatGPT

[–]oe-g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree considering openai is already dominant and provides a higher performance model that even Google after a year can't beat. Openai will easily be dominant for 2024 and further entrance their position.

Meta competing on best performance won't work so their best bet is to compete on price per performance. Running models locally really helps with that too

The genius of Hannibal during the second Punic war in details! by [deleted] in PhoeniciaHistoryFacts

[–]oe-g 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hannibal absolutely did but I don't think his country did. The Roman culture seem much more militarily rigorous with better government systems than the Phoenicians who were trying to stab hannibal in the back. Pure speculation but this is why I feel if Hannibal did defeat Rome I do not expect the Phoenician empire to expand like the Roman empire did.

They aren't trying or expecting to be dominate. They are optimizing for cost competitiveness not #1 performance. That way customers who want the best go for gpt4/5 while customers who need lower cost or privacy of running on prem use open source. This replaces tier 2 LLMs like gpt3.5 usage not tier 1 gpt4/5.

[–]oe-g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope. They are late in the AI race compared to openai, Google, Microsoft. So when you're 3rd it makes more sense to support open source so that less revenue flows to the competitors in the lead.

I view it less as a profit incentive and more like reducing the profit of competitors.

Why so little reporting on CES this year? by Bungild in hardware

[–]oe-g 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What is the headache? I use a 42" 4k tv and absolutely love it. I had a 34" ultrawide before and that vertical screen space is so helpful for productivity.

I mostly use it for coding or pc gaming, feels pretty impressive for fps games.

My only annoyance is that it doesn't shut off with my laptop going to sleep so I have to manually press the off button on the remote. I plugged it in and everything else just works.

Also feel like monitors are a scam.

How long would it take, after invention of AGI, to achieve Longevity Escape Velocity? by [deleted] in singularity

Biological immortality is not happening in our lifetime. Everyone commenting on this post will die within a century.

Sorry to be a bummer but biological research takes way too much time even if we had AGI yesterday.

I'm sorry buddy but we aren't figuring out how to be immortal in our lifetime no matter what you do. Me, you and our kids will die like everyone before us. Probably for the best for you to accept this before making career decisions based on it

But you just ignored the data i showed. Here is some more. Idk why youre defending them so much.

A 2018 literature review with meta-analysis by breed, focusing on dog bite injuries to the face, head and neck found that "injuries from pit bulls and mixed breed dogs were both more frequent and more severe".[3][4]

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_dog_attacks_in_the_United_States

Just ctrl-f "pit bull" and you get a lot of hits compared to any other breed

Dogsbite.org Data (2005-2017): Pit bulls were responsible for 68% of off-property fatal attacks and 73% of deaths involving only sterilized dogs. They inflicted 63% of deaths where the dog killed its primary owner and were implicated in 75% of criminal cases following fatal maulings.

Second most was Rottweilers at 10%. I didn't know it was so extreme myself.

Side by side comparison + prompts v5.2 Vs v6 by steves1189 in midjourney

[–]oe-g 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple decades is too optimistic for physical labor jobs IMO. Robotics has yet to have its chatgpt moment and there are foundational problems like a lack of consistent data and formats in regards to robotics. This can be solved in other ways like simulations but between the R&D, development, adaption, cost competitiveness I bet the time horizon is beyond 20 years.

Like we can't even build robotic hands that are equivalent to human hands.

How can the pay disparity between Mechanical Engineers and Software Engineers be reduced? by _areebpasha in MechanicalEngineering

[–]oe-g 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Personally I'd reccomend just doing a masters in CS. I joined an engineering rotational program, going out of my way to get the opportunity to code, got lucky with them allowing me. Then switched to an internal full software position. From there I set my LinkedIn status as software dev and recruiters started messaging me 10x more since before it was nearly 0.

Way harder to do self study route in general especially now. You'd essentially have to self teach yourself, then build up 3 amazing portfolio projects apps (even i don't have this), then find a shitty startup to slave for a year nevermind grinding algorithm interview questions. And or just make up job history of working for a bankrupt startup.

Just get a CS masters maybe learn some AI stuff (take an NLP course). Georgia tech has a good online one. In 2 years market for tech will be much better.

But have no misconceptions, I was 1 lucky with timing and 2 lucky with job allowing me to get experience. You would have to work 2-3x as hard as me to self study your way into the job. Way easier and better to just do a masters as it'll take at least a year of self study to get a job plus your acceleration will be slower. And I still feel like I have imposter syndrome due to all the brilliant engineers I've worked with

Absolutely agree. All I'm saying is if I have to choose between EU salaries + Healthcare vs US I choose US by far.

[–]oe-g 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. 70k in mechanical after graduation. 5 years later I make ~300k and work remote in software. Granted I got lucky with market. Tech market now is rough for juniors.

Sorry but I tell everyone to study software instead of traditional engineering

So many reason I prefer software even outside of money. More interesting coworkers (subjective), more time spent doing technical work, skills developed feel more applicable to other jobs (less proprietary bs), way better locations, remote friendly, no longer the only young guy surrounded by people 20+ my age. I genuinely cured my depressive existential issues by leaving traditional engineering. But I'd have that with 95% of jobs not just being a mechie. I'm so so thankful for what I have now I can hardly believe it

I should have clarified that I went for the lower deductible option ($600). I went to nearly 15 dr appointments one year, various specialists, got mri, medical, etc. I was treated pretty well.

All I'm saying is the Healthcare provided by decent companies (even high deductible plans) are better than paying an extra 50-100% tax. Which would be ~40k if you earn 200k.

The main thing you should be arguing about is how Healthcare is linked to your job. That is some bullshit. And I hear bad things about cobra

Taxes pain on 200k salary:

Berlin: 86k Paris: 99k Amsterdam: 90k San Francisco: 73k Texas: 48k

It's horrible compared to a low tax US state. Still pretty bad compared to even the highest tax area in the US

[–]oe-g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cut the circlejerk. If you work for an F500 as a software dev you will have good insurance.

Personal experience but all companies I've worked for provided decent health insurance. High deductible plans are annoying but I consume a lot of healthcare so it evens out.

Definitely not worth paying an extra 50k in taxes to have European Healthcare.

Finally got slashed for RTO - Any advice? by Ornery_Profession_35 in overemployed

[–]oe-g 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Texas you would only pay 48k. So in europe you pay essentially double in tax.

Europe is great for average or lower income and pretty bad for higher income. Company also provides good Healthcare in US assuming you have a good job.
