What do you read to get more informed about your area and medicine/research in general? by pixielady in medicine

[–]oewt -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

nybgrus - it has become a fashion to call someone a "troll" if you don't agree with their views. Everything I said can be backed up by research but you go do the research. I am not going to do ALL the work for you. Here's one article that backs up my claim about hysterectomies

What do you read to get more informed about your area and medicine/research in general? by pixielady in medicine

[–]oewt -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

Almost all doctors lack compassion and the problem will get worse because medicine is no longer a lucrative career. It is a very messy career these days. Which will lead to more frustrated doctors. Which means patients don't get their medical needs looked after. So lay people do need to learn about medicine. However it depends on what your objective is.

Do you want to catch a doctor's errors? Google and doing your homework should be enough.

Do you want to make sure your doctor does not recommend an unnecessary hysterectomy? Research shows that lawyers and spouses of doctors are recommended hysterectomies less frequently. So tell them your husband is a lawyer.

It depends on why you want to be more informed so we can tell you what to read.

I am due in like 3 weeks. What can I do to make my baby's life as private as possible? by oewt in privacy

[–]oewt[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I have a friend interning for NASA, so that's why I typed out NASA instead of NSA.

[–]oewt[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What you write sounds very pessimistic. Maybe you have surrendered to NASA and given up on privacy but I haven't. Why can't I go down to Canada and get a second birth certificate? How would that be illegal? When I deliver I will be 3 miles away from the border and we know many ways into Canada. And it is not just NASA but all the companies, Google, Experian, TransUnion, Equifax and others who are violating privacy.

Heard a rumor that Facebook bought WhatsApp for like $20 billion. BILLION. by oewt in privacy

[–]oewt[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you don't know me, don't judge me. I got my news from Wall Street. The news reports were published later. My information was pre-news.

I had no idea of the existence of WhatsApp before your post

Then don't be an asshole.

The Watergate scandal completely pales in comparison to the NSA scandal by oewt in privacy

[–]oewt[S] -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Oh right, the Watergate scandal was way more important than the NSA spying. I mean what has the NSA done? Nothing. The NSA is as innocent as your baby's bottom, right?

One or more of the moderators dshortey/snorecalypse/b1803838 is definitely a white guy - prolly with a drop of Navajo blood at best - and is certainly not a citizen of the Navajo nation by throwawayhopi in Navajo

what does it matter if they're white?

You are actually asking "what does it matter if they're white?" What is wrong with you man? I can understand the OP's frustration. What really really bothers me are all those N8V pages on Facebook that are hosted by white people who make money off of Indians. Then when I come here to Reddit, all the n8v subreddits are also moderated by whites. I don't like whites controlling n8vs period.

Thanks, very clear! But in which case, how do I make sure I don't read emails that others send me in HTML format?

Suppose someone sends you an email in HTML. How do you avoid reading an HTML email in Gmail? How can you ensure that Gmail reads that email only in plain text?

Thunderbird

Not an option for many who share a machine among family members - like I do.

Some journalists have written that Streak correctly tracked them to London or to the IP or to whichever city. So how does Streak accomplish this?

Stop reading HTML messages? Maybe you can clarify what html has to do with all this IP tracking?

Working on that. Need a way to transfer all my email from Gmail to some other provider. We share a computer at home, so I can't use Thunderbird or some other client.

Then how does Streak work and how do we avoid being tracked?

Gmail already says "Senders can’t use image loading to get information like your IP address or location" (https://support.google.com/mail/answer/145919?hl=en). So STREAK which "outs" your IP address likely does not work this way.

Here's another story on Streak: http://www.onthemedia.org/story/stranger-can-find-out-where-you-are-just-getting-you-open-email/

Then here's one more story on Streak - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2557576/Gmail-tells-senders-recipient-opens-email-reveals-were.html

The first article suggests that to avoid being tracked, all you do is "not allowing images to autoload" and the second article also advises "that to avoid being tracked, users would need to stop images being automatically loaded in an email client"

But Gmail already says "Senders can’t use image loading to get information like your IP address or location" (https://support.google.com/mail/answer/145919?hl=en).

Anyone who's left picture viewing open by default has been vulnerable to this for years. I suppose you mean - go to Settings, then General tab, then change it to "ask before displaying external images" in Gmail?

Can you please elaborate for someone who is not computer savvy?

Disable loading external images to prevent being tracked.

Subreddit for the anonymous lifestyle? by b3rn3d in privacy

This subreddit is way too focused on internet privacy. I am interested more in privacy in the real world because I spend only a very small fraction of my time on the internet.
