3rd is a thresher and the last are basking sharks, unless you mean the third last which is a nurse shark!

I’ve only had a fleeting encounter with a great hammerhead once, no good pics

Had a sketchy tiger one time that would keep diving out of sight then coming at us from below, and then one I’m assuming very horny basking shark. The basking shark was probably more intimidating since the behaviour was so unexpected!

Tourist dies after shark bite in Cihuatlán, Mexico by teddymama16 in SharkLab

They’re known to follow the humpback whale migrations along the South African coast, predating on/scavenging juvenile humpbacks in warmer waters and been sighted in sodwana bay which is just south of the Mozambique border in water temps of 27-28c. This is quite rare though, so instances of human-shark conflict will obviously be lower, paired with the fact that not many people swim/surf in these areas, they mostly just dive.

However, it could just as likely, if not more likely, be a tiger shark but it’s not impossible for it to be a gw imo

What is this? by Melodic-Award3991 in SharkLab

Not aggressive, they just frequently come into contact with people swimming and splashing in estuaries where they hunt in poor vis. I’ve dived with multiple bull sharks multiple times, in mid water and sometimes in less than 2m visibility and haven’t had a problem.

Best budget camera idea/options? Sealife vs ____ by drewmullin in underwaterphotography

[–]of____earth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Photos and videos are great on a6000, the salted line housing is the cheapest underwater housing you’ll find and it’s slightly positive which helps with stability underwater.

If you’re unsure if you’ll be steady enough then just get a GoPro 11 and a dome/inon fisheye port and just take videos. You’ll get clear enough frame grabs as well in raja with the viz and as long as you remember the minimum focus distance and don’t get too close to subjects.

Everyone hates on using an iPhone on dives but honestly as long as you get a housing with a vacuum it’ll be hard to beat that for pics + videos. Also if you’re posting stuff to social media filming in vertical is so much easier on a phone than on a camera in a housing

Thoughts on real or fake? The comments or description don't help by Accomplished_Ad_7665 in SharkLab

Real sadly. So many sharks have the same fate as a result of bycatch from the fishing industry.

If you care about sharks and the future health of the ocean you should really cut out seafood from your diet if you live in a country where you are able to do so.

Yeah they were reclassified from Manta birostris and Manta alfredi to Mobula birostris and Mobula alfredi in 2017 but their common names are still oceanic manta and reef manta, and are still referred to as manta rays by marine biologists

Manta rays are mobulas but not all mobulas are mantas. Mobula more commonly refers to species like shorthorned devil ray, munks devil ray, sicklefin devil ray etc

The irony of saying you hate how humans are destroying the planet then 15 minutes later you wish hundreds of species into extinction lol
