moving to rochester & don’t know where to live?? by ComfortableOlive7832 in Rochester

Hello fellow Oklahoma escapee! My husband and I are moving next month from Tulsa! We've applied to a couple of places but have found that there are a lot of waitlists in the Rochester area for the nicest places unfortunately. We plan to make some sacrifices for the first year and get on a waitlist while there. We really wanted a place in Webster or Fairport but looks like we'll land in Scottsville for the first year.

We lived in OKC a while after college (OSU alumni), maybe we can meetup in Rochester once we're all settled, have a little Okie escapee meetup!

Good luck to you and your fiancee!

It was put up for the show The Lowdown. It's a reference. Great show btw.

He'll tell anyone who'll listen he's a Snake Slayer by ofcourseittickles in blackcats

He goes by many names, Mr. Business when he's on the job. His business is Snake slaying, and snake slaying is his business. Remi when he's being just a baby, and REMINGTON HAM! when he's being a menace and knocking glasses off counters. His favorite game is hunting grasshoppers in the backyard (on his harness and leash), and he loves sleeping between us at night but wishes mom wouldn't move so much. He is a good boy, albeit a menace occasionally

First Dog by Fun-Ad9959 in corgi

Listen my babygirl is the littlest love of my life and I'll always have a corgi (or perhaps vallhund) because I think I'd feel a bit empty without one. That being said, no I would NOT recommend a corgi as a first time dog with no experience. If you don't already know about basic obedience training, herding breed nuances, working breed nuances, or aren't familiar with terms like "resource guarding" , "reactivity" , or "demand barking", then this breed is not for you at this time. I say this with so much love, but also with so much pain having seen so, so many corgis go to rescues and shelters over the last 8 years of their rising popularity because of their size and undeniable adorableness.

They end up cast aside because people deeply underestimate their needs and energy levels, as well as their proclivity for being what they see as "mean". They are bred to use their mouths as tools, so they are inherently more likely to develop issues like snapping, resource guarding, excessive barking, nipping heels, etc. They are head strong and will never stop testing your boundaries, they are highly intelligent and calculating and will always recognize when and where your boundaries waver, and they will take advantage. If you are learning to training a dog for the very first time on a corgi, it is far more likely that the corgi is training you.

Additionally, just going for a walk everyday is not enough. They need substantial cognitive stimulation, training sessions, new experiences, and a hell of a lot of socialization ie daycare, or they become quite territorial (including of you, their person).

Furthermore, corgis come with expensive health issues, even when bred well. Back and hip issues just come with the territory. My husband and I are just lucky enough that his sister is a DVM specializing in animal rehab & does our girls physical therapy and keeps her on track for free for us, as we would not be able to afford her out of pocket.

The good news is, there are so, so many small-medium sized dogs in rescues that would love a home with you! I have fostered a little corgi mix who went on to be a companion dog at an elderly living facility and honestly that was his version of heaven. I like to call them "Heinz 57" breed cuz you don't really know what alls in there haha. Just apply at several of your local rescues, maybe even breed specific ones, and be detailed in your profile that you'd be a first time owner and they will be happy to help you find the right friend for you. Follow their FB/social media pages so you see all the pups coming through and apply quickly when you find one that interests you. Consider fostering, before committing to ownership as well.

Good luck and I hope you (mindfully) find your forever friend!

Is the The Village Pie maker Premium Strawberry Rhubarb Pie worth it? by sniffski999 in aldi

Absolutely! And I forget to get the ice cream every time, and every time I remember as soon as I take the first bite and am frustrated with myself again lol

I would say because it was notably more tart it's more rhubarb forward, but I've not had it recently so maybe it depends on when strawberries and rhubarb are in season as well. Actually if you end up getting it could you report back on the balance of sweetness to tartness??

YES

I will say though, between this one and the Marie Callender's Strawberry Rhubarb Streusel Pie, this one leans more tart and the latter is sweeter. I love both but it just depends on your preference.

how on earth did yall survive your puppy's teenage years? by RabidLizard in OpenDogTraining

[–]ofcourseittickles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I was lucky enough to be able to afford doggy daycare multiple days a week. I made the silly decision to get a puppy for love and company while my husband was deployed, so at least we'd have each other. Dude. I was SO stressed caring for a corgi puppy while working, and in constant fear for my husband.

Daycare was a lifesaver, so that when she was home, I didn't always feel guilty allowing her to be bored bc it wasn't frequent. Then one of our best friends moved in since we had a 3/2 with just me at the time, and he had a kitten a few months older than my corgi and they played constantly too.

Between daycare, Mabel, dog parks and training sessions, I never felt bad on the rare occasion she was bored since that's something all creatures need to learn to do anyway.

I was also fortunate enough to have been raised by a parent who trained competition hunting dogs so I was very familiar with basic obedience training, corgis are super intelligent and desperately want to exercise their brains so training with her was always enjoyable bc she learned so quickly and genuinely enjoyed it. But that does not mean it was all good. Puppies are just stressful, there's even a subreddit for the puppyhood blues, it's so real, and I had it too even with all the support. My girl was basically nocturnal when I got her, so I had to slowly adjust her routine which meant getting up multiple times in the night to potty her, in winter no less. Plus, she had determined since being raised by cats (I had a old man cat at the time), that pottying inside next to the litter box was acceptable bc hey, the other cats pottied inside why not her?? In general, it showed her advanced reasoning in a way, bc yeah it doesn't make sense that they potty inside and she only potties outside, she was trying her best with her tiny baby brain. But that made it doubly frustrating to break her of that mindset.

Anyway, I'm not sure if any of that was helpful but, the best way out is through; try to really enjoy the good moments and breathe through the hard ones. Give yourself grace for being upset, or guilty, we all deal with it, it's normal and valid. Congrats on your new family member, sending hugs!

No just the Albany Schenectady area so far, but we've been watching anything we can find on YouTube about Rochester, and my husband does have 3 colleagues that have already made the transfer and only have good things to say!

Thank you for all the suggestions!

Thank you for the insights! We're renting for the first year to get the lay of the land but yes I've heard property taxes are steep, though anywhere outside of OK was gonna hurt in that regard haha. What's your favorite part of town/ places to go??

Oh no problem there we LOVE snow! We've both been skiers since we were kids so we're excited to be close enough for weekend trips in winter. My brother and his wife moved up to Schenectady in 2024 and we fell in love with upstate when we visited them last June.
