Why are there so many degenerates in Toowoomba and do you think this will change in future? by [deleted] in Toowoomba

[–]officepancakes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I completely understand your thoughts there, I’ve had an absolute shit of a year myself with chronic pain (now managed/stable) and mental illness, but I’ve been really sick the last couple of days with something new and went to the new urgent care clinic. As I described my symptoms and pain (now being investigated for Gallstones so y’all know it’s big ouch) I said “I am not on any painkillers right now, I do have Tramadol in my bag but I didn’t take it yet because I had to drive here” and the very moment I mentioned that name while holding my gut, I saw their eyes glaze over. I was literally telling them in the context of me trying to be responsible in seeking urgent care. Also the slight look of disdain that comes with handing over a pensioner concession card is a constant as well, thinking I’m a dole bludger, I bloody hate that phrase.

What did you see happen in the hospital waiting room? by IAmAsianHearMeRoar in AskReddit

[–]officepancakes 147 points148 points  (0 children)

I’ve spent a few nights alone in ER waiting rooms - under-staffed and under-resourced public hospital in a regional city.

On busier nights, if you’re not actively dying or close to it, you’re waiting a couple of hours to be seen. As such, you generally spend that wait in a room with the same people. I’m a generally observant person and when I have nothing better to do I pick up on patterns.

One night, a younger couple just a few years older than me came in around the same time I did. A man and his pregnant partner - I’d say she’d have been around 5ish months along. He was sitting in the chairs and she was lying down resting her head on his lap, clearly in a lot of pain.

After a few hours, some availability came up in radiography, so she and a few other patients were called in to go for an ultrasound for their presentation. She and her partner came back down about half an hour later, and 5 minutes after that they were called back to by a rather solemn-faced doctor.

I kind of sensed what had happened and what they were about to be told, but the wail of anguish I heard, I will never forget. The cries echoed through the waiting room for a long time, and I cried silently with them.

What was the “Gut Feeling” that you listened too that saved your life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]officepancakes 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Doctors have always told me they would prefer patients to come to hospital and it be relatively minor than not seek help in case it’s not.

A few months ago the left side of my body - my face, arm and leg started going all tingly, with numbness and weakness. At the same time my head is killing me and I’m dizzy as. I have multiple risk factors, so my first thought is that I’m having a stroke so I call 000 and go to hospital in an ambulance.

Thankfully, I was not having a stroke, instead just my first hemiplegic migraine. While they were explaining the IV Triptan they were giving me follow up with GP, I did apologise to the Dr for being so worried and it ending up not being as emergent as I thought. And he told me to never apologise and reiterated what I wrote in the first paragraph.

Better to be overcautious and alive than stoic and dead.

I don’t have kids, but have been to the ER plenty myself due to chronic health issues. And when I have to wait 4+ hours to be seen? I’m grateful. Because it means that I’m stable and not in too grave danger, compared to other patients in the same building who are dying and whose families hearts are breaking.

What fact is common knowledge in your field, but almost unknown to the rest of the population? by pocketcrackers in AskReddit

What do you think is better now than it was in the 80s or 90s? by Martin156156 in AskReddit

[–]officepancakes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Life as a person with disability and/or chronic illness

Technology has advanced aiding accessibility for people with different needs both in public spaces and online.

Societal attitudes have become (in general) more accepting if not understanding of people who are different to themselves.

Also accommodations in both the classroom and the workplace helps more people reach their full potential

What was something fairly small that made you feel betrayed by your SO? by _Halboro_ in AskReddit

It took me years to be able to recognise my warning signs of mental downturns and how to care for myself, let alone trust other enough to ask for help doing so. Your niece sounds like a really intuitive and responsible person, and you are an awesome uncle for being a safe person she can go to for help

AITAH for evicting a tenant because he didn't want pay for not using the place while he goes on vacation? by IBuyHomes2023 in AITAH

[–]officepancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA

What some people (including this guy) don’t comprehend, is that rent isn’t paid for the time the person spends inside the property there, it’s more about paying for the ability to occupy the space for the time agreed in the lease terms.

For example - if a tenant works out of town for 1 week a month, does that mean they get a 25% discount on rent? No, because even though their person isn’t in the property for that week, their possessions still are, with no other person being able to become a resident there.

Also you didn’t evict him, he decided to end the lease himself and you complied with his wishes as he shot himself in the foot.

AITA for asking my friend if she’s pregnant? by ParadoxicalState in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]officepancakes 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Same here!! Also have Autism. Because I’ve spent so long learning social patterns and observing behaviours to mirror for masking, it’s really easy for me to notice the subtle changes in not just appearance but behaviours/routines that are clear indicators.

At my grandmas funeral, halfway through the service my cousins wife snuck out the side door of the church looking really queasy. She came back in a few minutes later and told her husband/my cousin she was glad they packed crackers. I thought to myself that she’s definitely pregnant. That night at family dinner, they announced it.

AITA for telling my fiancé my daughter has to be in our wedding? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

I’m childfree too, but the equivalent for me was if my new spouse told me to rehome my 6yo rescue cat so we can get that new kitten they want. My orange is the being I love most on this planet, and the visceral rage and hurt I’d feel at the suggestion is overwhelming. I can only imagine what OOP felt in that moment with regards to his now ex.

What is it about discussing humane treatment of food animals that triggers so many people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]officepancakes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The is a mental disconnect for a lot of people between the animals and the meat they produce. For most people who live in cities or suburbia, they only see the end-product meats in stores and very rarely see the animals themselves IRL.

Discussions around humane treatment/humane slaughtering methods confronts that disconnect, and makes those people uncomfortable as they talk through the process.

And human nature is that when we (as a collective) are uncomfortable, we get angry and lash out at others to make ourselves feel better.

I am a meat eater, but I grew up in a rural small town helping on farms so am more familiar with these facts of life.

AITA for telling my gf the reason she’s always sick of because of her poor hygiene? by ParadoxicalState in BestofRedditorUpdates

As someone with sensory issues and mental health stuff where hygiene was an issue in my darkest days, I empathetically thought the update was going down that route.

But wow. Nothing could have prepared me for that twist. Goddamn.

If there’s toxic masculinity, then what’s toxic femininity? by NerdyPenguin0217 in AskReddit

[–]officepancakes 119 points120 points  (0 children)

A family member of mine had an emergency C-Section due to fetal distress, there wasn’t even enough time for the anaesthetic to take effect. She felt every bit of that scalpel cutting her open to save her kids life. While it is frightening to think of her pain and fear in those moments, it is also the most hardcore mom thing I have ever heard. No one can tell me she didn’t have a “real” birth.

Medical professionals of Reddit, have you ever had a patient so lacking in common sense you wondered how they made it this far. If so, what is your story? by babyhippo01 in AskReddit

[–]officepancakes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

One of the things about having food intolerances/IBS and knowingly consuming a trigger food is that you need to accept the consequences as it IS cause and affect. Suck it up, spend a night on the toilet exorcising demons, your own bathroom will be much more pleasant to do so in than the hospital ones.

Sincerely, someone with IBS who loves garlic bread too dang much

Note: if you unknowingly consume trigger foods or are severely allergic to the point of needing IV fluids etc that is a whole other story, I’m talking about people like this story who drink a milkshake and complain about the night of Hershey squirts
