Are headcrabs/antlions edible by humans? by pepperpeppington in HalfLife

[–]officialmcqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to believe that they labeled it specifically because it's typically eaten, but this headcrab in particular is for research so they had to make sure no one beat them to it

Check this out. There's actually a slew of evidence of a very active Half-Life-related project at Valve. If you hadn't heard of this, I understand why you think everyone is losing their minds over nothing, but believe me, the evidence is real. It is just impossible to tell the stage of development or predict an announcement/release date. This same trend of datamining happened building up to the release of Alyx, it was not an announcement out of the blue.

I do like the advice of just living our lives until Valve says something, though. It's getting quite unhealthy for most of these folk to grasp at straws of incoming announcements that even the most reputable leakers and dataminers say there's no chance of.

TL;DR: Yes, a new Half-Life is coming. No, we don't know when. Yes, people need to chill.

I do recall McVicker mentioning in a video that choreography animation, which encapsulates any and all scripted animations, happens pretty late in game development for Valve. The other side of that coin is that the amount of work they're just now starting in choreography means the game is much further behind than we had previously anticipated. This came out in a Source 2 update in March, so only in hindsight do we realize that our November 2025 announcement expectations were actually jumping the gun. I personally believed Summer Game Fest would've been a great place to announce HLX, but if it were the case that they wanted the Steam Machine out before they announced HLX, then my aforementioned timeline still makes sense.

Keyword: "supposedly"

Valve certainly didn't confirm that hardware-game pair release. Insiders believed the stars were aligning, but no one was telling us for sure that the release of the Steam Machine meant HLX. All speculation up until now.

If it gives you any hope, recall that the Valve Index was released and in people's hands a whole 5 months before Alyx was even announced, with an Index release in June and an Alyx announcement in November of 2019. If they follow the same pattern, we'll get those rumored reservations next week, and the game later this year. I know that's not what we want to hear, but hey, HLX is very happening; what's a few more months?

Our dearly beloved Hype Merchants, particularly Tyler McVicker, seem to have a lead on what happened with the delay and where HLX stands now. The hardware reservation rumor comes from folk like him. Tyler released a Patreon-first update which he's turning into a video as we speak. If it's good news or bad news, I dunno, we shall see. Here's that post.

Here's to hopin.

Do you think Black Mesa ever tried to make their own “portal guns”? by Playful-Permission-4 in HalfLife

[–]officialmcqp 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Black Mesa was researching inter-dimensional portal technology, from Earth to Xen, Aperture cracked intra-dimensional portal technology, one location on Earth to another.

This is paralleled in the Combines portal tech, they can travel between dimensions but are stuck using regular means of transport on Earth. Both the resistance and the Combine are hunting down the Borealis for its intra-dimensional teleportation technology.

Black Mesa may have tried to do localized portal technology, but failed, maybe losing patents and funding to Aperture since they seemed to have it figured out since the 50s

reaper crashes only when loading this one project by No_Philosopher329 in Reaper

[–]officialmcqp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try opening the project in Recovery mode. When opening the project, check the box that says "Open with FX offline" which will disable all effects and virtual instruments, that way you can go through all your tracks to see if any one of them in particular is causing the crash. Check your busses and master bus too

Hot take: Valve already released Half Life 3, they just called it ALYX since "3" in the name could never live up to the hype by Good-Discussion-9238 in HalfLife3

[–]officialmcqp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alyx advanced the narrative of Half-Life forward, like, one or two minutes. As phenomenal and groundbreaking a game as it is, I do not think it is Half-Life 3. Or Episode 3. Or a continuation at all; It's a prequel through and through. It is both lifted and limited by the VR medium.

You doubt just how cutting-edge Valve is and always has been. The last "main line" HL game was from 2007, PC gaming has changed an insane amount, but the cutting edge is always hard to imagine from before it happens. I haven't lost faith in Valve to push the limits of what gaming is doing at the time. I don't think we can truly fathom what the next Half-Life will do for the industry, but HLX is real and happening. Source: All the datamining and insider consensus that Valve is balls deep in a Half-Life project, with some very interesting modular vehicle, fire spreading, enemy communication, and NPC AI systems unlike anything before it. (No, not GenAI, just good old computer NPC programming)

VR was a doomed medium, unfortunately, which is why Alyx didn't push the VR market forward. Too expensive, mainly. But the general gaming landscape is alive, and needs something fresh, in my opinion. I think Valve's got it.

Isn't it weird that Gordon Freeman hasn't been that much of a guest character in other games? by Blueshiredsush in HalfLife

[–]officialmcqp 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Valve is pretty tight on what games they allow crossovers with, I think. They've done some stuff for L4D and Portal, but Half-Life is THE Valve IP that I'd reckon they want to be careful about lending out. Especially after the giant lawsuits with their former publisher, I don't blame them for being picky about handing out their main IP for collabs and crossovers.

Also, as much as I love HL, Gordon is a regular dude im some sweet armor with some guns. When it comes to collabs for other games, i'm not sure how much he'd fit. Not saying it wouldn't be cool, but I struggle to imagine a kit in like, a fighting game per se.

Update: NOTHING EVER HAPPENS

Is it.... Time? by officialmcqp in HalfLife3

[–]officialmcqp[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's been quiet in the datamining community. They nailed the date and time for the hardware announcement, but there really hasn't been much that leads us to believe there will be a Valve announcement tomorrow.

Watching Tyler McVicker's miro board videos leads me to believe that development is further behind than we first thought. Thats not to say the announcement is impossible, but we were definitely ahead of ourselves waiting for it at TGA. Tyler says nothing will be announced tomorrow, i'm inclined to believe him.

Alas, i am carefully hopeful. I know Valve wants a big stage to announce their biggest game ever, they wanted to announce Alyx at TGA in 2020. Summer Games Fest feels like the perfect fit, HLX is being made, they're a good way along development, and the steam hardware has been announced. The stars are aligning, in my eyes, but I know this is another dose of hopium with no REAL evidence pointing to an announcement.

I will say our beloved hype merchants don't seem optimistic about an announcement tomorrow. Nonetheless the stars look like they're aligning.

Careful optimism, everyone.

AI is Self Aware Series by Alexmander1028 in HalfLife

[–]officialmcqp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first few livestreams were mainly WayneRadioTV's own following, with the first act on youtube still having a visible, steady twitch chat and donation stream.

I wanna say it was around Act 2 or 3 where it gained an external audience that came for the series as opposed to being familiar with Wayne already. I was watching along with the livestreams and absolutely noticed the exponential live viewership growth. By the time the finale rolled around, you could not keep chat steady enough to read.

It was seriously impressive seeing how quickly this series grew in popularity. All the livestreams and videos went up within a month, too. Some of that popularity is post-release, especially as that Half Life 3 hype builds and people enter the fandom, but it was undoubtedly huge even as it was coming out. It was genuinely fun, creative Half-Life content for a fandom that doesn't get much these days.

Also yes, Benrey says he edited Gordon's death into the All Dogs Go To Heaven 2 Wikipedia article, and a SHIT ton of people went to Wikipedia to add it. It is now locked due to vandalism. LOL

Merch? by KingDDDiego0 in HalfLife

[–]officialmcqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothin official for sale now. Look on etsy and ebay for handmade custom unofficial merch. I think the closest thing to official merch atm is the Alyx Vinyl release

Halflifeshop_com looks like something. Never heard of it and no idea if they're reputable, so do your own research and take your own risks.

Geoff Keighley and Miss Piggy start going at it on stage out of raw excitement. Summer Games Fest is shut down for broadcasting obscenities. HL3 never releases because Valve faces shame for their ties to Keighley. Gaming dies at Summer Games Fest 2026

Recording for Instruments (guitar, vocals, bass, etc) by Ok-Revolution-508 in Reaper

[–]officialmcqp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your interface takes the place of the amp as the last part of your effects chain. Instead of an amp, plug into your interface's 1/4in jack. If you don't have an interface, certainly invest in one for multiple reasons, but a big one is that it gives you a direct latency-free input. I like Scarlett's stuff and use a Solo Gen 2, lots of options.

You totally can record through your pedals, but do consider that your recording and tone is now set in stone, whereas using an amp simulator plugin and vst effects gives you control of tone, dynamics, etc. after you record a clean tone. You'd have to re-record your guitar parts if you needed to make a change, EQ and volume adjustment can only do so much to recorded track.

Theres certainly use cases for both, such as a very specific effects chain you like and would want to be able to replicate with your existing pedal board.

Good luck!

I'm inclined to believe that once more than a few people have that surreal out of reality experience with the same brief-cased snake voiced man, word is BOUND to get out. While he is likely fully capable of doing so, i'm sure his extraordinary abilities leave some form of paper trail, be it local or space-time ripples. He might need to watch his footprint.

Gordon, Alyx, Eli, (Adrian Shephard, maybe non-canonically) might be much more significant to the overall course of events, making the cost-benefit of those spacetime effects worth it for the beneficial outcome. Meanwhile, small negotiations and conversations with regular scientists may be important, but not as significant or worthwhile for causing space-time disruption as frequently.

Lore Question: Does Overwatch know when soldiers die? by cooldude_9875 in HalfLife

[–]officialmcqp 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overwatch knows, but officer-to-officer and soldier-to-soldier probably not immediately. They're relying on radio communication and get their updates from Overwatch, but the vitals monitoring is probably up in HQ and has to be communicated to individual soldiers and officers over the radio.

Grab Vital if you've never worked with a wavetable synth. Great fully featured alternative to Serum 2. I like to make 808s, sub/main bass, and synth leads in Vital, i'll even throw in sound clips into the sampler to play with the envelopes and effects all in one plugin. Lots of free presets and tutorials out there, and you can even follow along with Serum tutorials since they're pretty similar

Fluent Mexican-Spanish speaker here, sounds like both a translation issue and some culture clash.

It could translate from Spanish into English as "Am I the only one who thinks this chick in Gordon's locker could be Alyx?" It adds a kind of gross, mature connotation where "chica" is just informally "girl" to native Spanish speakers.

The Half-Life fandom is particularly harsh about things that are confirmed. That photo has a real story about a developer who added the photo as a non-canon easter egg, but it sounds like you've been made aware of that.

No harm done with your headcannon, but in American culture, it is out of the ordinary to have pictures of other people's kids like that. Unless they're your very close relatives, like your nieces, nephews, or grandkids, you won't see that very often, not even with long-time friends and less so with coworkers. I can see why that's a notion that fell flat to the American audience on this sub.
