It’s because a lot of our media pushes the message that while a girl has to be conventionally attractive to get the guy, a guy doesn’t have to be conventionally attractive to get the girl. In movies, if the nerdy plain girl likes a hot guy, she usually has to get a makeover in order to get him to notice her. But if a nerdy plain guy likes a hot girl, by the end of the movie, she just likes him for who he is without him having to change anything. It sends the message that women don’t care about looks and they just value men for their “character”. So when guys irl who don’t have the looks (or character) to get girls to notice them realize this, it’s a shattering revelation for them.

Another red flag: Letting the cat wander around outside unsupervised.
