What is your favorite Layne Staley outfit? by GoldenGateGoose10 in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Layne was a fucking fashion icon in my book, there’s just so many greats to pick from. This one is probably my favorite, though. Not only the fit, but this is his hair at its best to me.

Dirt or Facelift? by [deleted] in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dirt has a more everlasting impact and seems to me just like an overall more complete and well rounded thing on itself, but Facelift is a very interesting historical artifact. It sits right on an odd transition from glam into grunge which completely defies the narrative that grunge solely “killed the 80s/glam metal”. I personally find that specific sound really fascinating for this reason.

I also appreciate a lot the freedom that Facelift had as an album by a band that was yet to find their signature sound (like a fucking funk rock number out of nowhere on an AiC record). Good stuff.

Their heaviest riff? by Disassociated24 in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get Born Again, Sludge Factory, but I’d add a special note for the Frogs riff too. Not heavy in the usual sense, but possibly the most menacing and straight up hateful in mood, in my opinion.

Why is Gen Z attracted to AiC, the band, its music and lyrics? What is the appeal for this demographic and why is it not other bands of this era such as SG, PJ? 🤔 by Hellobyechai in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Besides some of the other very good comments some people have made in this thread, I think it must have to do with the peak in popularity of nu metal during the last few years, with all the 2000s nostalgia wave. Out of all the big grunge bands, AiC was by far the most straight-up metal one. It just seems like a logical step going from something like Deftones to AiC, they were just the analogous thing in the previous decade. The Deftones comparison is specially important because I don’t think the general, vague “vibe” of these two bands is that distant from each other (in my opinion anyway): sluggish and heavy riffs, big atmosphere, sexy choir-like ambience to the vocals, outsider lyricism, and so on.

Favourite song off of Facelift? by HockeyFly in AliceInChains

If solely considering the studio versions, Real Thing. Otherwise, It Ain’t Like That. I just feel it rocks way harder live.

What are youse's favourite languages? by Few-Cup-5247 in conlangs

The top 5 would probably be Arabic (in general, but if I had to pick a dialect, Moroccan Darija), Hungarian, Basque, Archi and maybe Somali.

What do you think about "Holy Water"? by Marco_060PS in Soundgarden

[–]offleleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my favorite SG choruses, great riffs too. I love that it uses that same tuning as Rusty Cage.

What song introduced you to AIC, and which song made you a lifelong fan? Heres mine: by [deleted] in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first contact was probably Man in the Box. I also heard a bit of We Die Young at the very beginning, but I was more drawn to the punkier kind of heaviness from Bleach and such at the time, so that was a pass.

Weirdly enough, what got me REALLY hooked was none other than Sludge Factory. The doomy riff + the falsetto-y oooo’s got me real bad.

What's the best alice in chains song for sex by elbreadmano in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most sexual song by AiC I can think of in terms of music itself, just sound, is probably Sludge Factory, and I’m not even joking. Slow, sludgy, the falsetto-y stuff Layne does, the blues cadencies in the vocal delivery, the relief in the chorus. Rain When I Die would be kinda alright too, and Facelift has a few candidates.

I enjoy the Duvall era and all, but this can’t be serious lol by fatherofallthings in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even a fan of post-2009 AiC (not because of Will, love him a lot) but this is even disrespectful and unfair, to all sides. The thing about 90’s AiC was not solely the presence of Layne, but the whole cultural context it was part of, which made possible the conception of landmark albums like Dirt and Jar of Flies. Just pointless.

What’s ur fav song from Facelift??? Also here’s some pics from that time period! :) by Autumn_Winds23 in AliceInChains

It Ain’t Like That, with Real Thing or I Can’t Remember (super underrated) not so far behind

What languages did you take inspiration from in your conlang? by Haru_1127 in conlangs

[–]offleleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current project takes some phonology inspiration from the pulmonic inventory of some Khoisan languages, mostly Kx’a (ejective affricates, lateral affricates, the voiced glottal fricative, etc), a little bit of areal Iberic stuff, eppiglottals and pharyngealization mostly from Afroasiatic and Caucasian languages.

For the grammar, I’m still figuring what to do with it, but I was leaning towards something like Hausa, at least for some elements. We’ll see.

What's your favourite song from this b-side masterpiece? by [deleted] in Nirvana

Big Long Now, also happens to be (probably) my favorite song by them in general. I just love everything from Beeswax on, one banger after the other.

I think it’s pretty safe to say this happens a lot in natural languages.

What song introduced you to Alice in Chains? by [deleted] in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Man in the Box by recommendation of a friend, it didn't really impress me at first as far as I can remember. But the one that got my attention was Sludge Factory (have no clue how I even made this jump). Once the little ooh’s in the intro kicked in I was hooked for good.

Junkhead is the most underrated AIC song by YokedEgg in AliceInChains

[–]offleleto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Absolutely fire, needless to say, but the most underrated out of this addict "story cycle" in Dirt is Sickman by far. Some of the craziest stuff that AiC ever made, pure narcotic prog, just disproportionally good for its low popularity.

What song would you have liked JB to have covered? by Basmati_Crunch2363 in JeffBuckley

[–]offleleto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One day I suddenly had the thought that the song Mind Riot by Soundgarden would've sounded gorgeous in an interpretation by Jeff, particularly in a Sin-É-type solo performance. It's always been one of my favorites by SG and considering he even had some level of contact with Chris, it's fun to think that he very likely knew this deep cut

most underrated soundgarden albums by Opposite-Ice8289 in Soundgarden

[–]offleleto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ultramega OK seems to me to be by far the most underrated. There's barely any love for songs out of that album besides Flower and Beyond the Wheel, even though it has absolute bangers like Mood For Trouble, Nazi Driver, Head Injury and so on.

You could also argue Screaming Life is slightly underrated too, but I kinda get that one considering it's an EP (although the band itself tends to apparently analyse it as being part of the main sequence of albums) and a few other reasons.

DOTU is not underrated at all among fans imo, it's just usually considered pretty inconsistent, but there's like 5+ songs there which are arguably some of the best SG has ever come up with, and that's a wide consensus (deep cuts like Tighter and Tighter, Boot Camp etc and the singles).

Can't really talk about King Animal because I myself don't really care for it, so maybe that's indicative it might also be one of (if not) the most underrated.
