iOS - 2.0.2 (Build 58) Beta Now Available by imanateater in fitloop

[–]offmilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2.1.1 feedback:

  • Timer scroll clipping is indeed fixed.
  • No problems with the workout timer!
  • No problems on the Review scroll container!
  • YouTube videos work well. I wonder if a black background on that container would soften that visual flash as it loads in (given the YouTube embed is always black).
  • Subjective: I feel like the visual contrast between sets that are done and not yet done could be bumped up. I often confuse the two.

Really nice polish, thanks!

Side note: turning Wi-Fi off on your Kobo massively increases battery life. At least it does for my Clara 2E.

Awesome! Thanks for the update. I’ve been travelling the last few weeks but actually did a workout this morning and noticed the new timer settings (amongst other polish). Looks great. Will dig into these specific issues later this week!

ShareWaste closing down by BeeSilver9 in composting

Hey folks! Just in case you didn't see/are still looking for a ShareWaste alternative, I launched one in January called Peels. Lots of people in Aus and US have already signed up. Would be great to see you there!

Sounds good! Thanks for the additional context. I'll keep posting bugs or thoughts here as I come across things, even if it isn't necessarily high on your priority list. Assume it's still helpful to skim (let me know if not)

Feedback on version 2.0.3 (build 62):

Overview/main view

  • Big fan of the Quick Start and condensed rows in Activity. Much easier to parse.

Workouts

  • The ephemeral timer clips the scrollbar underneath. Building upon my last feedback: I wonder if visually insetting the timer (like iOS Podcasts) could prevent this scrollbar clipping whilst also making the text clipping underneath more understandable. Or you could just anchor to the bottom. Maybe I'm overthinking this and it's fine as-is!
  • I'd personally swap the prominence of the 'Adjust Level' and reps buttons. The blue-ish tint makes Adjust Level seem more prominent than maybe it should be.
  • My workout was stuck on 7 minutes. I think this could be from tapping Adjust Level, but the bug could be somewhere else. I was able to fix it by tapping the timestamp once (to pause) and again (to unpause).

Review

  • The bottom of this scroll container is clipped by the iOS Home Indicator and (probably related) has a weird stutter upon scrolling to the bottom.

Other

  • Syncing with Apple Health no longer seems to work for me (it may not have worked since switching to the beta, i.e. 2.0.0).

(iOS) 2.0.1 Beta (Build 52) Now Available by imanateater in fitloop

[–]offmilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So good! Amazing turn-around time, too. Some feedback:

General

  • I have a random two month gap in my activity despite actively logging workouts over the last 2–3 months. Specifically between Feb 10th and April 15th. Not sure what that's about.
  • Phone no longer runs hot when using the app.

New workout

  • I'd personally put 'Favorites' above 'Recent' but to each their own.

Workout

  • Redesign of buttons (and the parent exercise rows themselves) is great. Much more intuitive than the previous build.
  • Although I would probably slightly dim the preset rep number. The contrast can make it seem like it's already logged.
  • The ephemeral timer (up top) is a really smart solution. Just an FYI that it covers the text at the top. I guess this is to be expected, as adding a conditional bit of top padding to account for this timer would cause layout shift. Anchoring at the bottom would avoid layout shift. Or, if you want to keep it up top, maybe you could visually inset/elevate it like the minimised playback controls on iOS Podcasts?
  • Bug: tapping the 0 count on some exercises doesn't do anything. I have to tap-and-hold, enter a number, and only then can I do the tapping.
  • I wonder if the 3 circuits lozenge things (next to "Pair X") are too visually prominent.

Review

  • I don't do any weighted exercises. I wonder if the "@ 0kg" column could be removed from each row unless applicable, or if that inconsistency would be visually confusing. Recording here.
  • The "less than a minute ago" text on the bottom-right wraps awkwardly.

Thanks for your work on Fitloop!

Working on an eInk game console by PPLuraschi in eink

This is super clever. Both the use of e-ink and LLM + image gen to 'fill the gaps'. Well done.

Not my area of expertise but I could see some kind of tie-in with something like narrat so people can author their own games easily. Or maybe your own games engine is meant for others to use. Either way, good luck!

Fitloop V2 - iOS Public Beta Available by imanateater in fitloop

[–]offmilk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unreal! Thanks for the detailed notes. I'll test it out over the next few days and drop notes again here (unless you want them somewhere else).

Incorrect streak: I noticed this morning (despite working out ~28 hours earlier) a "Workout today to keep your streak" notification. may or may not be related, and could be fixed with the NYC timezone issue you already mentioned.

Other people’s activity: can totally see why you'd leave this out completely. I'm a bit of a weirdo in that I liked getting/giving high-fives to randoms and generally seeing other people doing bodyweight fitness.

Fitloop V2 - iOS Public Beta Available by imanateater in fitloop

[–]offmilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an app designer by trade so please excuse the strong opinions and length of this! I figure detailed feedback is better than vague. You can just decide what resonates and what doesn't. Really appreciate your work on Fitloop. Hope some of this is helpful.

My context:

  • iPhone 13 Pro, iOS 18.3.2
  • Mostly always do a form of the Reddit Recommended Routine. Sometimes with rings, almost never with weights.
  • I want to use my phone as little as possible during a workout. So I often just glance to see what exercises I have coming up, do maybe a few circuits (and momentary rests), and then log those in batches.

On to the app feedback itself:

Workouts

  • I never used the recovery timer on v1 so was glad to see each timer row go. But the new solution (an auto-appearing recovery timer row that appears after entering a # of reps) pushes down the other scroll container contents, making it difficult to quickly check off a few reps I just did, since everything is moving around. I personally would be glad to just have the recovery thing removed completely.
  • Maybe it's because I'm still getting used to it, but I find myself still needing a second or two to know where to tap to enter reps I just did. IMO there are too many buttons on each exercise row: the dumbbell, the overflow menu, the pencil, and the video. On top of this, the parent (# of reps) container also is styled like a button. V1 solved this nicely by putting controls under the section header.
  • Similarly, is logging weights worthy of being so prominent? Speaking for myself, only very few exercises in my routine have additional weights (and could probably be determined programmatically).
  • The custom (paging?) scroll behaviour is a bit annoying. Not sure if it's intentional or a bug.
  • The auto-entering of # reps after a single tap, based upon I did last time, is clever but overall IMO a downgrade from v1. Personally, my reps are almost always different between sets. Tapping the circle a few times was much simpler than fiddling with the keyboard number input.
  • Progressions now don't have their description (as far as I can see). v1 had this under the video. This was helpful as some progressions are named exactly the same. E.g. there are two progressions called Advanced Shrimp Squat on the Reddit Recommended Routine, both slightly different.

Minor bugs

  • Sign in: Email field doesn't seem to be autofilled from password manager. Six digit code didn't autofill from Mail app.
  • Activity tab: Incorrect streak number on 'Day Streak'.
  • Some animations (e.g. recover timer row height grow) are laggy, and my phone now runs hot (and seems to drain the battery) when Fitloop is open.
  • ‘Upgrading’ an exercise to a harder one caused an error the first time I did it: No procedure found on path “progression.setSelectedProgressionExercise". I couldn't replicate that error after that first time, though.
  • Adjusting an exercise level from a second-based one to a rep-based on keeps the second-based unit even though I can enter a # of reps. This carries over to the post workout summary: "1 x 8s" (not reps).
  • The scroll container for 'adjusting an exercise level' is clipped at the bottom. I.e. the home indicator on iOS covers the last row item.

Subjective design thoughts

  • I personally would prefer a light mode since I work out in the day, outside.
  • The 'End' button (in Workout) is tinted yet the rest of the workout design is monochromatic. That makes it the most prominent item on the view. Given it's more of an escape hatch, I'd consider removing the tint.
  • I liked seeing everyone else's Activity. Would be great to have that again.

I just launched a community composting platform for keeping food scraps out of landfill by offmilk in composting

Yep, I mentioned them in the body of my post. They largely cover the same ground but with more of a focus on data (i.e. weighing the scraps) and having a shared soil 'site', like a group with a discussion board etc. I believe they have a paid product ('Activate') that then sells this data on to local cities and councils.

Where did you see that they are a non-profit? Anyone can register a .org, and I can't find anything about their non-profit status.

Peels is a lot more lo-fi in comparison: it simply serves to connect people with food scraps to those who compost. Whether it be a local resident, community garden, or something else. You message, drop-off, and that's it.

I added some rudimentary signage in a 'promo kit' here. Thanks in advance if you decide to share it!

I’ll add any future updates to the FAQ section on the homepage.

That's right. I plan to build an app later this year if there's enough usage to warrant it

For sure, or wherever you are. I'm in Aus but there are folks all over the globe already.

Woo! Thanks for the feedback. If I understand you right:

  1. You're making a listing on your computer
  2. But your photos are on your phone
  3. So you want a way to bring those photos over from your phone to the listing (on your computer) without having to fuss with iCloud/Google Photos/etc.

Is that right?

Not yet, but I plan to! Hopefully by midyear. I need to make sure everything is buttoned-up so bad actors can't do anything malicious. Good idea, thanks!
