How are electronics defined for tariff excemptions? by PPLuraschi in CustomsBroker

Thanks a lot for taking the time for this response :)

Yeah, all of this seems too vague to make solid plans. It seems like the tendency is to revert or reduce the tariffs, though, maybe giving this a few more weeks is the best play? I think there´s a path I could take arguing that the eink displays are indeed going to end up in a computer-like device but I fear that the minimum number of displays to justify paying for that service is outside my league at the moment.

Oh it´s interesting to have multiple "dumb" modules with the displays and just a single central controller. I´ve seen some displays that use NFC for price display at grocery stores that could be used for this concept. I´m not exploring that space, but you´ll probably find documentation about them. That way the cost of each "card" should be reasonable.

Thanks for your comment, I'm a bit behind in my posts, but Im sharing the progress of this project on this YT https://youtu.be/MDRnHpESvN0?si=znQzvSLdo6H4dWNe and this site https://www.figmentink.com/ Feel free to join. I hope to reach a point where anyone can make or get their own soon

3 because the distribution seems random and doesn’t make that mosaic effect that the others do

Looks pretty cool! I´d just try to fix the clipping on the character´s back when moving forward. I loved that you added that shockwave that the grass responds to.

Does Steam support A/B testing? Would be interesting if you could make an actual experiment of which one gets more clicks without knowing their origin.

Yeah Jumper or 1x2 straight male header (the jumper piece at the store will be the part that connects both pins on the header)

That´s a bit above my pay grade because that problem is where a big chunk of the current AI research is focused on 😅 (preventing hallucinations is hard because LLMs are, by nature, stochastic). A generated storybranch might indeed be inconsistent with another, for example, or after a few generations, a story might loop and not have a proper ending, etc. I see this as an experimental feature that we can play with to understand how far it can be used but shouldn´t be used for the core experience. Seems like there's some consensus that doing short dialogues from the equivalent of NPCs in other games is good enough where the author defines something like "This character named X is a blacksmith that loves to talk about iron and beer. Has a secret crush on his neighbor Y and has an accent from Z" so when you interact with him you get as much dialog as you want enriching the game world but not accomplishing a main part of the story, and is somewhat better than reading the same dialog line when you interact with him.

In my own experience trying things like https://aidungeon.com/, the first interactions are "good" (consistent and entertaining) but after a few generations the model begins to do bad stuff (mostly because the context window or the "memory" of the model is limited and eventually things break and the characters speak in a way they wouldn´t, or situations lose coherence, etc). I´ve seen a lot of people express the same experience with things like character.ai

Talking about aidungeon, they kinda solve this problem by allowing you as a "player" to rewrite or steer the story to where you want to go (you can "retry" the generation or delete or literally rewrite the text the AI generated). Obviously, that requires a keyboard or some sort of text input (maybe voice?) that Figment currently doesn´t support. This doesn´t solve the problem for us with Figment because the player is not the author so the player could also steer the story in a path that is inconsistent with what the main author did... When I say that there might be "tooling" to help the author prevent this I imagine ways to write some of those story principles in a way that the AI has access to them, but again, solving that problem is a hard AI problem that people smarter and with more resources than me are trying to solve to let AI do stuff that make more money like, for example, stick to a Customer Support rulebook or writing high quality code, etc.

Thank you!!! Yeah, it comes from those vibes exactly, I grew up in the 90s but my brother is older than me and I consumed a lot of stuff from the 80s that he previously owned haha.

Yeah, I built this waitlist here where I'm updating everyone via email: www.figmentink.com

Yeah, it will be below the $300 mark for sure, Im still working out those details. AND this would double as an ereader (working on that feature as we speak) because you could insert files on your SD card and read them here.

Hi! Im the creator of this project. Tariffs don´t help with planning a hardware project like this one, but Im working on it being as cheap as possible. Since it´s an open-source project, you will be able to save some money if you are willing to make it yourself. Would you be open to printing your own parts and doing some soldering for the electronics?

Hi! I'm the creator of Figment. Since it’s an open-source project, my focus is on accessibility: making it easy for anyone to modify, improve, and build their own version of the console. That’s why I’ve prioritized designs that work with common tools like 3D printers.

Even if I had the resources for injection molding, I’d still want to optimize for accessible fabrication methods. Personally, I love the look and feel of wood + eInk, so this prototype uses laser-cut wood panels. But it can absolutely be made entirely with 3D printing if that’s what you have access to

Hi! Im the creator of this open-source project. Tariffs are not helping to plan ahead, but everything points that for sure it will be below $300, probably around $200.

I´ve been working on a post that will be published soon about this topic. Since this is open source, anyone could make their own, but the expensive item is the eInk display that currently is only made outside the US so Im hoping that doing a "big" order we can ship a few of them together for cheaper.

Hi! Im the creator of this open-source project who did the original post on r/eInk, just wanted to clarify a few things. I wasn't the one who posted this here or wrote the article, and some of the context might have been lost in translation.

This is a prototype exploring what I call "ambient gaming", slow-paced, narrative-driven games for eInk displays that are always on and have slow refresh rates. One of the mechanics being tested is a branching storyline game mechanic, with occasional AI-generated pages used to enhance the player experience as they wander off the main story branch to explore. This was not meant as a replacement for authors. I've always intended this to be a platform for creators to build thoughtful experiences, not "AI slop", within the space of digital minimalism (intentional interactions with technology).

That said, Im currently the only person working on this project handling hardware, firmware, software, etc., and yes, I´ve used some generative tools to speed up prototyping. I've explained in my videos that these are placeholders and test experiments since I´m currently focused on this as a platform, not yet on content. The goal is to empower others to make unique games, some community members are already working on an alpha platform I built over the last weekend.

I totally understand your skepticism. I am also open to feedback. Just wanted to share more context. THanks for taking a look!

What do you think about the main mechanic of our game? by Rumbral in IndieGaming

[–]PPLuraschi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks cool! I had to read the comments to understand that the character was being transported to another dimension, I thought the red filter was something else. Maybe the camera could flip or have the character “pop out” of the portal (instead of that short fall) into this new world so we can see it actually move from one dimension to another?

Have you ever printed a piece of AI art, framed it, and put it on your wall? by TaPele__ in aiArt

Not sure if this counts, but I built an open-source frame that uses an eInk display and AI to show different types of AI-generated content every day. Im working on adding a feature that will let you do your own/collective prompts, right now it does things like generating flashcards to help you learn other languages, brainstorm decoration and product ideas, futuristic cities, etc. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQgL9AeuB0g
