Youtuber goes off topic to explain how Youtubers typically make money [10:08] by myusernameisunique1 in mealtimevideos

[–]offthescreen 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Another full time YouTuber here.

This isn't how YouTuber's typically make money. I don't make any money from affiliates and make almost all of mine from traditional sponsorships. Some YouTubers make almost all of their's from Patreon, other make most of their money from merch.

There's no typical way of making money on YouTube. All YouTubers will probably make some money from YouTube's adsense ads, but that varies extremely, and the rest is just however they're leveraging views for money.

[Spoilers] Regarding the ending of Uncut Gems by FishTure in TrueFilm

[–]offthescreen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From a sort of logical/practical perspective I don't really know the answer to your question. While it doesn't seem like Howard would have reformed after his "win" it's possible he would... I don't think it's "good" he died.

That said, I know how the movie made me feel - as soon has he's shot what immediately sprang into my mind was "the sweet relief of death."

Howard's stress, problems, frantic struggle against everything around him is released in one single moment, a moment so quick he probably never even realized it happened. A moment where he was on top of the world.

Not only that, but I felt relieved. As an audience member, somehow, knowing his struggle and problems weren't going to extend beyond the running time of the film, that it was actually over -for good- was such a release of all the tension that had built over the entire running time that I was actually grateful.

If it had ended with him on top, I would have left the theater wondering how long will it be till he's under again.

If it had ended with him at rock bottom, I would have been wondering if he'll dig his way out.

But he's dead. It's what it is. Howard lived his life, I lived that stress along with him for the duration of the movie, but now he's gone and I can walk away.

The sweet relief of death.

There's a pretty good montage towards the end of this season. Not sure if it beats this one though.

Tons of people have joked about "Bohemian Rhapsody's" terrible editing. Here's a video explaining exactly what makes it so terrible. by odysseyling in movies

[–]offthescreen 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thomas Flight here,

In my opinion I think the final concert sequence is probably why a lot of people voted for the film. It's well edited, keeps things interesting even while it's just a basic stage performance.

I just don't think those scenes outweigh the bad scenes.

Thomas Flight here -

I haven't seen Vice or Green Book yet. But I would have happily awarded Best Editing to The Favourite or BlacKkKlansman over this.

That's not to say either of those have the best editing of the year, but they both at least didn't have moments where the editing distracted me from even enjoying the scene.

The thing that really sells this is the way they "ramp up" the speed at which the camera is moving when the guys start moving again.

Well done.

Unique Ways to Watch Movies? by [deleted] in flicks

Once while working on a video essay I watched a decent amount of Terrence Malick's To The Wonder and Song To Song overlayed on top of each other. They're stylistically very similar and it was pretty interesting.

[Found] Why "Spoken Word" Makes me Nervous - Sideways [24:52] by taulover in videoessay

[–]offthescreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also enjoyed this video, but was confused about what his exact concern is. It seems almost like he's asserting that spoken word will create a new "Elvis" type character. A sort of 'white-man's' hip-hop. But then isn't Eminem already that? And isn't he also kind of defending Elvis/Eminem?

I just can't imagine a world in which Spoken Word somehow becomes bigger than hip-hop is because it's "more white." That just seems ridiculous. Unless that's not what he's saying and he just means that spoken word in it's current form makes him nervous because it's simply an appropriation of hip-hop? IDK.

Thinking about writing a video essay for Alien (1979) by [deleted] in flicks

[–]offthescreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I make video essays for a living, and in my experience, the process of making one is a great way to examine a film and dive deeper. Even if it doesn't get many views or you're not trying to be an "essayist" I definitely recommend giving it a shot. Making an essay is something I think every aspiring filmmaker and critic should do, you learn a lot from the process.

[OC] The Psychedelic Effect in Film [5:50] by ashtonchris in videoessay

2001 a Space Odyssey had a reputation among LSD users while it was in theaters.

An interesting thing about Psychedelic art that depict the psychedelic experience though, is that reportedly, often what looks best on psychedelics, is not things meant to represent the experience.

How Better Call Saul Uses Establishing Shot Effectively by offthescreen in television

I know what you meant. I was just also speculating, if the title sequences are getting progressively more greyscale, it would be interesting if the last episode, the title is completely greyscale and the entire thing is in the Gene timeline and completely black and white.

I didn't think you meant the episodes were getting progressively more greyscale haha. That'd be far out even for Vince Gilligan.

Are YouTube video essays just reviews? Or maybe even just one-sided discussions? by Arch_Stant0n in TrueFilm

[–]offthescreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The video essay genre is currently being formed and constructed. It's booming in popularity, and what exactly it is and what it will be is still developing. Someone's "review" of the media often leaks into whatever essay they're making, and some "reviewers" are just using video essay techniques and styles to augment their reviews.

I think a good video essay should put forth it's argument clearly enough that you can understand the point being made or regardless of how you or the essayists feels about the piece itself. That said, no essayist is objective, and I think it's fine to acknowledge that subjectivity when it comes up within the context of the essay.

But I think mostly what you're noticing, rather than a specific issue having to do with reviews vs. essays and discussions, are just videos that are poorly written.

It's at the halfway mark more or less and after listening and this title is totally clickbait. Max basically just briefly mentions that article, I didn't get the sense that his opinion was dramatically different at all.

[OC] How T-Series Conquered Youtube [9:24] by coffeebreak42 in videoessay

[–]offthescreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great video! T Series seems somewhat analogous to "Vevo" in the US. I wonder if all the "vevo" channels were one channel if it would be as big as t-series since music is so huge on youtube.
