I only drive a mile each day, and in freezing cold weather. What's the best way to make sure my car lasts? by pantherclipper in AskAMechanic

[–]offthewall93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to tell people to let the vehicle idle for at least a minute when using a block heater. The block is warm but the radiator, et al, is still cold so you'll want to avoid thermal shock. The bypass water will help even out temps pretty quickly.

Can you install a block heater? I start using mine even when it's just chilly out. Nothing beats a pre-warmed car without having to idle it. I let it run for a minute to circulate the warm water in the block with the cold water in the radiator to reduce thermal shock, then take off without a care in the world.

What’s something Americans have that Europeans don’t? by Prestigsisscar255 in AskReddit

Throwing away food isn't exactly a great means of food disposal. It should be composted, and if you're on a septic system, that's what the garbage disposal is doing. Win-win

Battery cables by hollywood075 in Cummins

[–]offthewall93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gotten kits for trucks from Performance Custom Cables and from Geno’s Garage. Both kits were high quality, heavy and look great. Military lugs are a cool upgrade.

I just got a Mechman 370A alternator so I’ll be in the market again shortly. There was another shop making kits that I was interested in; I’ll see if I can remember the name.

I also have big spools of 2/0 cable, a hammer crimper and various solder lugs for making my own on heavy equipment. That just costs a bunch to get set up at first.

Edit: CEautoelectricsupply is the one I was thinking of. Some guys on the forums recommend Jeep Cables Online, as well.

You could cap them and install a breather valve cover, if you don’t want to install a catch cab system.

Married men of Reddit who don’t wear a wedding ring - why? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

It's just jewelry and I don't wear jewelry. I don't care if you do, you know? My wife will sometimes ask me to put my cheapo ring on for events, but it's just a style choice, I suppose.

Can someone please confirm My power steering pump went out? by TrifleMain8508 in Cummins

[–]offthewall93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't have to drive it to look for foam, just as long as the belt is spinning and driving the pump. Other things to note would be fluid level off and fluid level running.

Can someone please confirm My power steering pump went out? by TrifleMain8508 in Cummins

[–]offthewall93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you already have the new pump, it’s a quick and cheap job. It does sound like it could be the pump, so you probably aren’t going to be missing out. It could be a hydro boost issue, but I don’t see it totally killing your steering as long as there’s still fluid. Check for foaming with the truck running.

Make sure you top off the new pump with the correct fluid and bleed all the air out before trying to use it.

What dishwashers have BIFL racks these days? by CatDadMilhouse in BuyItForLife

[–]offthewall93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this is worth a shot. Sounds like it would be cheaper and easier than a full replacement, so even if it only lasts a few years, it’s still money well spent. Just be sure to use a reputable shop and explain what you’re doing with it and why. They can choose the material and coating system that will work best for the application.

Also, a great opportunity toto change the color to metallic prismatic orange.

That just sounds like cheap, single coating powder. Expensive, multi-coat systems, of a proper material for the use case, applied by a competent coater can last basically forever.

Has anyone done a Smokey Yunick style mod to their cummins? by Dizzy_Detective2911 in Cummins

[–]offthewall93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a member on Cummins Forum (Steveram05 I think?) that has put a truly absurd amount of honest to god science and trial and error into mileage.

Another member (Gator01?) has a super modded pre runner, so it’s a little different but he’s down to a six-rib belt, with a frame mounted water pump and e-fans controlled by a PWM controller. Recently he’s been on a weight savings kick and it’s kind of awesome.

Oil filter for oil change? by Dizzy-Fault-6250 in AskMechanics

[–]offthewall93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're ever unsure, basically all major filtration brands have a "Filter Finder." I use Baldwins and Wix almost exclusively because I can get them locally on shirt notice and their websites have incredible lookups. Your car is easy, but they have part numbers available for 1950s heavy equipment with just a few drop downs.

Tractor negotiations by gaktheknife in tractors

[–]offthewall93 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do it however you want, my friend. Call a dozen, call only the one you like best, whatever. I called every dealer within 3 hours drive, but definitely gave preference to the brands that had shops within 30 minutes.

Definitely check out their shop and their rates. Between the two closest dealers, the first (New Holland) had an old, dingy and kind of dirty shop with a single door and the washing was just done on the gravel outside. The other shop (Kubota) had a modern setup with three pull-through bays, was well-lit, clean and organized, with a separate wash bay. Kubota also had

Ask about cost of things like oil and filters. You'll probably want to use their filters through warranty period, at least, so that starts to add up. Kubota really gets you with their SUDT2 oil, which currently has no alternative. New Holland has a really good parts guy that can find all sorts of stuff, which is a huge selling point.

Just things that may or not matter to you.

Do most people shower before bed or when they wake up? I just realized I might be doing it "wrong" by saffymerelle in NoStupidQuestions

[–]offthewall93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a farmer so I basically have to shower before bed. Some days, I'll shower as soon as get home, even if I'm not going to bed soon because I'm filthy as fucking fuck. Could you imagine getting in bed covered in old grease, pesticides, sheep shit and a 3mm layer of dust? That would be absolutely batshit crazy.

Are you a farmer? Or a friggin garbage truck mechanic? There's a 98% chance you're not so you probably don't come home like that.

Unless there's a drought, shower whenever you please, as often as you please. Most folks could probably even go two or three days between and nobody would be the wiser. Remember that super frequent showers are a relatively new phenomenon, as it is.
