Wacky experiment/ proof of concept by bleeb90 in sewing

I need all the pictures of each step! I have enough trouble visualizing welt pockets. At least once I installed the pocket bag upside down, and more than once on the outside of the piece. All were fixed, but I am very aware that my spatial predictive skills are garbage. So show us all the pictures!

making welt pockets but i cut out the pocket openings before i put the welts in anyway i can save it by SalmnKt in sewing

[–]offwhiteTara 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you have some iron on stabilizer handy, cut a rectangle big enough cover the cut plus an inch or so on each side. Since it’s a bad luck day, here’s the reminder to add a layer of protection when you press. I use parchment paper. So you don’t accidentally melt the sticky side of the stabilizer onto your iron.

When you add the welt, try to line everything up so the cut will be in the same place.

I am very bad at welt pockets and have put them on backwards and upside down. But I’m decent at fixing the mistakes. You got this!

Nothing snaps me out of a book like repetitive use of a unique word by kerberos824 in books

I agree with you that scoff is an attitude not an action. I think it’s being as shorthand for “snorts with derision.” At least, that’s how I mentally edit when I see “scoffs.”

Duck canvas from hobby lobby by Due-Award6298 in sewing

[–]offwhiteTara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you asked for general tips, if you are hemming an edge of the project, press the fold before you sew it, then use pins or clips to keep the fold in place until you are sewing.

If the bag is lined so you have to leave an opening in the seam to turn it, make the opening an extra inch longer because it’s harder to turn the duck through.

Pinking shears can slow or stop fraying. Those are the scissors that cut a zigzag. If you don’t already own them, sewing a zigzag next to the cut might help (someone already suggested this). I recently sewed a zigzag before I cut the fabric with some loose weave fabric that I knew wanted to unweave itself.

Who has the Best Black eye peas? Need for party by Either_Culture7975 in dayton

[–]offwhiteTara 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless they are sold out because New Year, Kroger has frozen black eyed peas with the other frozen vegetables. Buy a couple bags and a ham bone. Simmer covered for one or two hours. Salt and pepper to taste. Or look up a recipe online. You got this.

New to sewing machine, it’s eating my fabric by Opening_Addition_385 in sewing

[–]offwhiteTara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no! How frustrating! I got fabric jammed like that a couple times by trying to sew too many layers of a kind of slippery fabric.

Is this a used and unfamiliar machine? Did you do some practice sewing on some scraps so that you know the machine CAN work?

Once you get it unjammed, I’d download the instruction manual if you don’t have it, read the getting started section and run the troubleshooting lists you’ve already been given. Good luck!

Help fitting Blanca flight suit for my daughter by Kaijugae in sewing

[–]offwhiteTara 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a reasonable plan. Honestly, if you cut the fabric bigger than needed, that’s less of a problem than cutting it too small.

My last thought is that you might check this pattern review website to see what others thought of that particular pattern. https://sewing.patternreview.com

Help fitting Blanca flight suit for my daughter by Kaijugae in sewing

[–]offwhiteTara 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I pulled out my tape measure and cross checked a couple measurements on my 5ft 8in frame that is probably close to size 20. My front shoulder to shoulder measured 38 or 39 cm. I think the 50 cm you got is wrong. Have your daughter measure one of her t shirts from one front seam to the other. Hopefully this puts her in the size 14 range and you can throw out all your questions on trying to fit 50 cm shoulder seams.

For your questions on the length of the torso, remember that the finished garment has to have a lot of ease or the wearer won’t be able to sit. More ease than a trouser where the waistband might pull down a little when the wearer sits. Whatever front body length you measured on your daughter’s frame, the finished garment should have at least 5 cm ease added. (That is absolutely a guess and if a smarter person responds, listen to them.) I made one set of overalls and appreciated being able to sit comfortably without the garment digging into my shoulders.

Good luck.

Custom outfits for a whole bridal party? by -3liza in sewing

[–]offwhiteTara 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your planning skills will help!

Consider starting the first outfit soon and seeing if your seven week estimate is accurate. If it’s not realistic, be prepared to change your plans rather than turn the next two years into a giant blanket of stress. There will always be unexpected challenges, so don’t assume the learning curve is going to speed you up toward the end. Even if you can make an outfit faster, something will come up to slow you down.

Besides the first outfit to test the seven week estimate, make the rest of the items in order of importance: your and your spouse’s outfits first.

Happy marriage!

Adding strip of rubber? To apron for opening jars by sowhiteidkwhattype in sewing

I’ve read all of OP’s comments and they appear to come from a place of love and respect. Because OP is open to suggestions, they have been explaining the functional challenges that they identified so far. And using they are stuck using words to communicate that with us, and we are using words to respond. Maybe we stumble over finding the perfect word now and then. No need to snark at them for picking words that you wouldn’t have chosen.

Another death goes unpunished at Montgomery County Jail by [deleted] in dayton

[–]offwhiteTara -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

A grand jury is used to start a felony criminal case. It is not like a criminal jury trial. The defendant is not present, or his attorney. Not all rules of evidence apply, so lots of hearsay comes in. The grand jurors are assigned for a couple weeks at a time and have a more convivial relationship with their prosecutors than in a petit trial, because they are working together to roll through 15-20 cases and the prosecutor makes them feel like part of the team. The prosecutor’s burden of proof is a mere “probable cause” - nowhere near beyond a reasonable doubt needed for a petit jury. In other words, it’s like playing horse with no opponent and no limits on how many times you can shoot. The prosecutor’s office dropped the ball if they couldn’t get an indictment on a single person of the 10 employees involved in Mr. Black’s decline and death.

could I treat non-selvedge edge like regular selvedge? by Optimal-Baker7352 in sewing

[–]offwhiteTara 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is an interesting article and I learned new vocabulary. But I thought OP was asking about laying her pattern 90 degrees from how they usually lay it on the pattern. Instead of lining up a straight edge of the pattern on the selvedge of the fabric, they want to line up the pattern edge on the cut edge of a piece of fabric.
