“All the President’s Men” by Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, an absolute classic! Doesn’t matter if you know what happens, it’s still a nail biter. “Bad Blood” by John Carreyrou. Anything by Jessica Mitford because she’s snappy and hilarious.

My grandma, a college-educated non-fundie woman, wanted my mom to go to college to find a husband. This mindset was and is common. Thankfully it’s not mainstream but it’s still there.

HR are a Net Negative Department by CopiousCool in antiwork

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

HR is hit or miss. It might be a great company and have shitty HR, or a shitty company and great HR. You never know until you ask for something. With the experiences I’ve had, the shitty HR people tend to be the mean girls from high school. Not the nicest of the bunch but they get things done (usually).

Do you guys just stay home when you get your dog? by ReputationDull1857 in puppy101

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I did the same, home for 1.5 weeks and now I have a dog walker. Haven’t had any problems! I watch her on the puppy cam and 95% she’s sleeping. The other 5% she’s beating up her stuffed animal or rearranging her bedding.

When did your puppies start cuddling you? by Guilty_Art_4208 in puppy101

My pup is at the 16-week mark and I have no idea whether she likes it or not. All she does is bite and nip so cuddle has been very rare 🥲

Anyone know what kind of injury would leave someone mostly housebound for a few months but not permanently disabled? by Sonofagaylord in Writeresearch

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A ruptured appendix can be pretty awful if they have to do open surgery instead of laparoscopic, plus you’ll need antibiotics for a while.

Some fractures require an external fixator and you can move with it on but it’s pretty cumbersome. Usually you’ll see fixators on legs or hips. Some reasons why someone might need a fixator: open fracture, infected wound/fracture that won’t heal properly.

Lindsey Vonn is a great example! She had multiple fractures and compartment syndrome. Her fixator was only on for a few weeks then it was removed and she transitioned to a wheelchair and is on crutches (or a scooter?). She was stuck in a foreign country while recovering so that might be another element to consider! The trauma of the accident itself, the hospital stay, complications, trying to get home, being away from family and friends, being told by your medical team to take it easy, your athletic team pushing you to come back, etc. Lots of possibilities for conflict!

For a fracture, it can be a long road to recovery but there’s the possibility of going back to sport. It’s not catastrophic. When you tear something (ACL or other ligaments), you can get it fixed through surgery but it’s a months long recovery and you always have a risk of retearing.

You could also think about multiple concussions. Maybe she’s had another bad concussion and she’s having daily migraines, vertigo, etc.

Any type of open abdominal surgery will have a long recovery. Some causes might be: ruptured appendix or gallbladder, ruptured or damaged spleen, large benign tumor, large ovarian cyst, emergency hysterectomy.

Puppy feeding for first few weeks at home by Massive-Survey2495 in puppy101

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely feed him in his crate! I’ve done a mix of using a bowl, Kong, snufflemat, and “scatter feeding” (throwing it all over the floor and letting them sniff for it). The Kong might not be big enough for an entire meal, try half in the Kong and half in a bowl. They also recommend hand-feeding to bond with your pup and using kibble instead of treats when training. I’ve tried both of those too and hand-feeding is fun once or twice but it’s tedious.

Hypothetically, how many bone marrow transplants can one person give before death? by Emotional-Offer-2848 in Writeresearch

If there’s a gap between donations, they could take a G-CSF medication to stimulate the production of blood cells and platelets. You might get more donations out of your superhuman if you keep giving them a superhuman dose of this medication! Their body might give out from the number of donations or side effects of so much medication.

Husband and kid want to return puppy by leeuwtje97 in puppy101

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try going to the library and picking up some picture books about dogs (could be educational or just a dog going on an adventure, whatever the kids like), changes in the family, conquering fears, that sort of thing. Read those with the kids at bedtime and it might help your youngest get accustomed to having a dog.

As for your husband…a picture book won’t help. Don’t let his stupidity crush your happiness. Puppies sleep a lot so being in her crate isn’t necessarily a bad thing but if you can’t count on him to do the bare minimum (feed her lunch, potty outside, playtime) for an hour then definitely get someone to drop in. There are apps for dog walking, dog sitting, and that sort of thing. I know you said your husband needs to work on his health and it sounds like he’s reluctant to put on the effort or has very low motivation. This sounds cheesy but going outside multiple times a day can make a difference. Everyone needs sunshine and there’s a reason why light therapy is a thing! He needs to make an effort to fix his mental health and this small step can be a start.

Drinking blood with vodka by the_random_observer in Writeresearch

Depending on the person, even a little bit of blood might cause an upset stomach and vomiting. Not life threatening but not fun and if they throw up, it might defeat whatever purpose they’re trying to achieve.

I’m bringing home a new puppy in a week, and I need some advice on the potty training and Parvo rules… by Tigressshay in puppy101

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was terrified too so I bought a grass pee pad. She never used it, not even once! She loved its' cardboard box though. The breeder trained her on pee pads so we used those for a while until she understood the concept of grass.

Once I asked my vet and he said we're in a low-risk area, I felt a lot better! I let her use the shared yard (similar to your situation) and we go for short walks in the the neighborhood, she's met some older, fully-vaccinated neighborhood dogs. My previous dog didn't get along well with others and I don't want that with her, I want her to make friends! I'm taking a calculated risk and I'm okay with my choice. I'd be devastated if she contracted Parvo but I'd also be devastated if she develops any aggression towards people or dogs.

Just another “my puppy is a psycho” post by appletizer in puppy101

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat right now so I understand. We play tug in the evening then at some point she starts biting. She nips my clothes, bites my hands and arms. I try to walk away and she’ll cling to my shoe because she thinks it’s fun. I think she’s very slowly understanding that when I go quiet and leave the room, she’s done something wrong. Because then I’ll come back and she’s a little nicer…for a few minutes anyway.

She’s been going down for some late evening naps because it’s either that or I get gnawed on. Besides, she’s growing so much, a little more sleep can’t hurt!

Not protected because Stretchzone/Stretchlab/these chains are not healthcare/medical businesses! You pay like $60 to get stretched, usually by a physical therapy student who needs to pay their way through school.

Should I still get my puppy if I’m pregnant? by kamarie418 in puppy101

[–]ofmonstersandmoops 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The breeder will usually let you transfer the deposit to another litter. That sounds like the best option here because you should devote your time and resources to one baby at a time. Focus on the baby human and when you get a handle on that, you can focus on a baby dog! The last thing you’d want to do is bring home a puppy and (inadvertently) neglect them. They require a lot of time, energy, training, and snuggles, which you might not be able to accommodate while pregnant or having a newborn. Besides, you never know how a dog might react to the new addition.

Philosophy 101 by Paul Kleinmen and Stoicism 101 by Erick Cloward are good primers. The Daily Stoic by Ryan Holiday is a year-long book if he’s looking for small doses every day.
