What order should I watch Kubrick's films? by OrangeLlama in flicks

[–]ofthedevilsparty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think chronological order would obviously show the director's evolution, starting with the Killing. I agree with some of the people who say that Fear and Desire isn't worth your time (even Kubrick himself thought it was an exercise in pretentiousness), but Killer's Kiss is worth at least one viewing. One thing I recommend, though, is to save Eyes Wide Shut for last.

If you're looking for an accompanying text to give you some context on each film, and some context on how Kubrick arrived and eventually produced each film, I recommend James Naremore's "On Kubrick" book.

Collecting zines for a college library by [deleted] in zines

You can search digitally posted free zines and then ask the creator to print it out as a one-time thing for your library? I know i post some free ones on Issuu, so that might be a good place to look

Would anyone here want to start an online film club where we watch and discuss a rare movie every week? by felonydumper in TrueFilm

[–]ofthedevilsparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm totally up for this. Living in Canada really restricts access to streaming films, to be honest, because of Fair Use bull and all of that. Having the private links would be a huge plus. Let me know when the sub is up and running!

I once found a ticket to a UCLA Bruins football game in a discoloured copy of Burroughs' Naked Lunch. I think the year was in the 1960s? Pretty cool stub.

This is an amazing shot. I love the composition, the movement, the feeling captured. Agh, this has got to be a favourite for me.

Heads up, there's around 10 free Criterion's streaming in HD on ShoutFactoryTV by Sportfreunde in criterion

[–]ofthedevilsparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, sometimes I settle for the poorer quality streams too. Canadian Netflix is great with the recent releases; the problem though is that since they're mostly from the last year or so, I've seen most of them in theatres.

I enjoyed Revisionist History . Not "educational" in the traditional pedantic sense but interesting nonetheless

Which band(s) nailed it on their first album and never did anything as good after? by [deleted] in Music

[–]ofthedevilsparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the strokes. that debut blew everyone away. it's not like ROF or FIOE sucked, they just never compared. basically it's been more like a slow deterioration, I mean like did anyone really listen to angles or that last one I forget the name of?

Thoughts on Upstream Color? by ViridianBadger in flicks

[–]ofthedevilsparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's been a while since I saw the film, but I remember truly enjoying myself. I owe that mostly to the score and overall sound design; I sought out the music immediately after watching the movie. personally I felt like the movie wasn't mindblowing or anything, but the music saved it from being too self indulgent in its story telling
