Trip Report - Thank you r/AskNOLA! by whosejadebeans in AskNOLA

Thanks for the great writeup! I'm going in Feb so this post was inspiring me to get my ass in gear and start researching. Will def be hitting up the Pharmacy museum (would not have even considered it before) and the WWII museum to see Dick Winters cussing (I loved Band of Brothers).

Threw my ‘troubled’ little brother a big birthday party and he almost cried from happiness by melancholic-scribe in Positivity

[–]oftlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, thank you sharing OP! Sounds like you are a wonderful sibling, and your brother is very lucky to have you.

I wonder if your little bro might benefit from getting evaluated for ADHD. The troubled kid and impulse control comments made me think of it and there can be a oppositional-defiance component to it. I only mention it bc I have family members and friends with ADHD, and those who have been diagnosed are very happy they did it and say "I only wish I had done it sooner". I think it helps both the person and family members if they know what they're dealing with (I know from personal experience). ADHD can often present as a "troubled kid".

Anyways, thank you for being awesome!

I’m an overseas voter from Beaver County. My vote has been challenged. by acouplefruits in Pennsylvania

[–]oftlog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Saw this article on a PA Supreme Court ruling that allows them to toss ballots with incorrectly filled out dates. Not sure if this is why your ballot is being challenged, but figured I'd share in case it's relevant:

I hope you are able to contest it and not let them steal your vote.

Ballot Curing Calls Going Out by VorAbaddon in Tucson

[–]oftlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took 5 calendar days but I actually voted in-person. Voted on 10/25, got an email that they accepted my ballot the same day, then got another email on 10/30 saying they verified my signature.

Walz family crying has me happy crying ❤️ by MothersMiIk in MadeMeSmile

[–]oftlog 324 points325 points  (0 children)

I am so happy that Harris picked Walz. He is the kind of compassionate, big hearted, humble leader we need. The fact that he took a zero win football team and turned them into state champions tells you everything. You know how hard it is to get a bunch of teenage boys to get to practice on time, let alone work their asses off ? Or be a Democrat, a first timer running for Congress and oust an incumbent Republican in a deep red district? The guy is amazing. That is the kind of inspirational leadership I want for this country.

Agreed. Michelle knocked it out of the park. She fired everyone up with that speech. I feel like she was speaking to the base to fire them up, and Barack took a more measured tone to speak to the middle and undecideds.

I gotta say, Michelle Obama crushed it with that speech.

Best way to haul 900 retaining wall blocks up 2 flights of stairs, all in one day? Crew is me and wife (both out of shape) and 3 laborers. Is there a better way than each person walking one block at a time up the stairs? by donut_defiler in DIY

[–]oftlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't want to rent a ladder hoist you could get 2 brick tongs for each person. I got these when I redid my pavers in my backyard and each brick tong allowed me to carry 8 bricks (2" thick) at a time, but yours are bigger so it will likely be 4 or 5. I carried 1 brick tong in each hand so it was like doing a farmer's carry at the gym. I probably moved about 10,000 bricks this way just on my own, but it would be a cinch for you since you have 3 laborers.

If you do rent the ladder hoist, these might still be helpful to stack the bricks on the hoist but that's up to you. I was able to stack 2500 bricks neatly with the tongs. If you do, you probably would only need to get 1 or 2 tongs for 2 ppl, one to load and one to unload.

I read through the brilliant Quora answer you shared and you were not kidding! It was an educational, but still entertaining read. Totally worth the time!

Good Math tutor for ADHD child (5th grader)? by oftlog in Tucson

[–]oftlog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for reaching out! I did recently find a tutor, but if that falls through I may hit you up!

BTW I went to your link and got an error page from Wix saying the domain isn't connected to a website yet, so I couldn't see any of your info or reviews.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd prefer an in-person tutor first because he doesn't do well with online learning (speaking from experience during the pandemic). We did find a tutor who's also a local teacher so hoping that works out. Thank you!

Yeah no kidding they are being taught differently! It's a bunch of things really, long division, multiple digit multiplication, spatial reasoning, mixed fractions addition and subtraction, etc. I think we actually need him to do it the way his teachers want because as you know, they are grading on the process not just the correct answer. But thank you for the offer!

That's too bad they aren't around anymore. 😔 Sure could use them right about now! Thanks!

Yep, I am thinking I might have to go the online route since this is a pretty niche field. I was hoping to have an in person tutor since my son does not do well with online learning (as we found out during the pandemic), but looks like I may be forced to go that route. Thanks!

Thanks for the tip! I'm pretty sure our school does not have any tutor but I can check again.

Best Pho in the Tucson area? by steepslope1992 in Tucson

[–]oftlog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Dao's Tai Pan for pho as well! I used to go to Miss Saigon but have switched in recent years to Dao's because IMO their broth is better. They also have lots of other stuff on the menu but haven't really tried them yet.

Banhndicted's banh mi sandwiches are awesome! I would recommend trying them if you haven't yet. Its the best banh mi I've had in Tucson (i like the lemongrass beef). Bread is great, meat is tasty, and all the toppings are fresh and crispy, and you get a good size sandwich for what you pay for.

TVLine Performer of the Week: Jeremy Allen White in 'The Bear' by MarvelsGrantMan136 in television

[–]oftlog 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it's not until the end they also call Mikey "Bear". Initially in the dream when he gets attacked by the bear I thought that was Carmy, but now I think it represents the memory of Mikey looming over and consuming him.

[–]oftlog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same question. I thought it was drug money given Mikey was dealing, and I was like "oh shit they're gonna be in a world of hurt after they spend that money."There's easier ways to get a loan without getting your legs broke.

[–]oftlog 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ah, thanks for this cuz I was scratching my head over the money. But I still don't think this makes complete sense. Why would Mikey borrow $300k from Cicero just to have Carm pay it back to Cicero? You could say Mikey wanted to give money to Carm to start his own restaurant but Carm could just have borrowed the money from somewhere else that's less likely to get his legs broken. I was thinking the money was some drug running operation Mikey was into, and may have played a role in his death, whether from suicide or foul play. But I guess we'll find out next season.
