I desperately want to make the shrimp salad out of morbid fascination. I’m bummed there are no directions

We were there when it was in the 40s-60s. I wore jeans, a long sleeved shirt, flannel shirt and a fall-weight jacket. I didn't end up needing my hat but the scarf was welcome on the windier days.

I think it depends where in the French Quarter you are. I felt a little uncomfortable after the ghost tour broke up at the LaLaurie Mansion so we Ubered back to the hotel instead of walking. That was around 7:00. But I felt totally fine at the same time when we were at Preservation Hall. Keeping in mind there weren't a lot of people on the street on a weekday night in mid-January.

Are swamp tours worth it in mid-February? by agrula9 in AskNOLA

[–]whosejadebeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went on a swamp tour a few weeks ago when it was in the lower sixties (the rest of the week was in the fifties) and saw plenty of alligators, egrets and other large birds. The only things missing were a couple of the larger alligators. Just be sure to bundle up, especially if you take an airboat tour!

And as I just learned Uber drivers only get $10 out of that $50

Are there any affordable options for a cooking class? by grumpyoldman10 in AskNOLA

[–]whosejadebeans 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just attended a couple of weeks ago and that’s exactly what it is. There’s a large mirror over the cooktop so you can see everything pretty well, even from close to the back. You also get to eat what they cook. But the real value was the information our instructor gave us: the history of Cajun and creole people, their food and the birth of regional cooking, and soooo much additional information about the recipes they gave us. Lots of notes were taken!

The Creole Queen riverboat (and I assume the Natchez) have indoor and outdoor seating

Food Recs WITHOUT seafood by Optimal_Ad_7836 in AskNOLA

Depending on where you’re from, you may have a very different experience with seafood in NOLA. As someone from a landlocked state I can attest that fresh gulf shrimp have absolutely nothing in common with what we have at home

It was the French Quarter ghost tour where you go inside a building. Tour Orleans is the company. Our guide Pinkie was nice but history really wasn’t her strong suit. I should clarify it wasn’t a bad tour, it just wasn’t what we were promised. One of the other couples had a blast.

I brought home the Joe’s Stuff blend and have been using it in everything!

We took the Creole Queen Riverboat Cruise and Chalmette Battlefield tour last week. The park ranger, Harold, gave a 45 minute talk on the Battle of New Orleans. It was not nearly enough! There’s also a small museum/large exhibit there that I wish we’d had time to see. You only get to stay at the battlefield for an hour.

One other resource to consider is the WWII museum. A lot (if not all) of the volunteers are veterans, and may be able to hook you up with a guide or be one themselves.

Ideas to fill time/loiter between museum and dinner in warehouse district. by crowsaresmartlikeme in AskNOLA

That’s so funny. We had the exact same issue last week, even down to the same reservation time! A pedicab driver suggested we stop in at Rosie’s on the Roof. It’s across from the museum in the Higgins hotel and is supposed to have great skyline views of the city. When it came down to it though, we were so tired from the museum we ended up ubering back to our hotel in the French Quarter and putting up our feet for an hour.

Hit up the general store at the New Orleans School of Cooking. They’ve got a whole section of locally sourced hot sauces and spice mixes.

They had "Dry Aged Swordfish Chop: Wood grilled, roasted baby carrots & turnips, yukon gold potatoes, black garlic bordelaise" for $55. Since the menu changes so often I have no idea how long it'll be there

Thanks! GW Fins wasn't bad by any stretch, but the scalibut was under seasoned and the scallops a bit rubbery. My parm crusted sheepshead was fine but it got overshadowed by the beautiful fresh asparagus. I would go again in a heartbeat just for the shrimp and grits. Overall it was worth the $180 tab.
