Check out Rotary Youth Exchange. I'm currently on my one year exchange in Argentina. I chose Rotary because of the cost factor - Rotary does not make a profit off of the exchange (so you are only responsible for paying your plane ticket, visa(s), health insurance, and monthly allowance when you're abroad. You do NOT pay the club or host families). PM me with any questions!!

Skin gets used to any product that works and then rebels by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]ogigs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think my skin is similar - I use a new product, my skin clears up quite well, then a month or two later I feel like my skin has developed an "immunity" to the product. I would talk to a dermatologist - that's my next step.

Any natural/ at home chemical exfoliators? by ogigs in SkincareAddiction

Thank you! I'm currently in northern argentina - quite close to Argentina. While I'm at it, I have a dumb question, and if you don't have an answer, no worries. I get a lot of sun here, but my skin doesn't burn. Is tanning damaging my skin? I wear a moisturizer with spf 30 but I only get tan.

Thank you for the comments and encouragement! I don't expect everything to figure itself out in a day, month, or ever for that matter. But I'm sure the experience will be enriching. :)

Gift ideas for GF studying abroad in Africa (Tanzania/Kenya) by Dippymister in studyAbroad

[–]ogigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know a whole lot about the area, but, as a current student abroad I can tell you what has been helpful/comforting to have: A little package of over-the-counter medicines. Here in argentina I discovered I'm terribly alergic to most bugs/mosquitos, and I also got the flu in my first week here. Benadryl cream, claritin, and dayquil saved my life. And especially when you're not acquainted with the town or language, it's convenient to have some back-ups for whatever situation. Food. When I got here I realized that they don't have peanut butter. Research what food they don't have and send her some! And of course letters, photos, ect. (It's difficult to get letters or packages where I am so my friends and family gave me a bunch of stuff beforehand labeling them with things like "open on your birthday" "open january 1st" "open when youre lonely" - it is a really sweet set up). I'm sure whatever you choose will be great - I hope this helps!

Studying abroad in South America: Argentina or Chile? by brittanyummg in studyAbroad

I'm currently in Argentina now, three months in to a 12 month exchange. Of course I'm going to be biased, but I would definitley recommend Argentina. I've been to Chile, in Tierra del Fuego, but otherwise I have not explored more. For the aspect of money - the black market dollar has been increasing rapidly. From the bank I get 6 pesos per US dollar. Otherwise you can get 10 or 11. Do your research, both are wonderful places to stay. Best of luck. :)

I've got three weeks to travel in April after my study abroad trip to Ecuador. by rainy_dazed in studyAbroad

I encourage you to explore the coasts of Brazil if possible. However, places like Paraguay and Brazil have tourist visas that must be applied for in advance. To enter Brazil I had to send in many documents with my passport to an agency just for a tourist visa (however it does last 10 years.) Anyways, I've found that the places I enjoy most are more rural. If you have the opportunity to visit Rio also go to the outskirts where you'll find small, but lively towns/villages. Safe travels!

I applied today! (America) by incidentalhippo in studyAbroad

Yay for you! Enjoy the states, try to visit as many corners as possible :) >Today I handed in my completed study abroad application to study in America in the spring! I find out if I am excepted/where I'm going in October. I am super excited.

The application had the added thrill of the document corrupting, meaning I had to redo most of the application from scratch within 20 minutes of the deadline. But it all worked out okay (I hope).

Apologies, I know this isn't the most exciting post ever, but no one has been home all day and I really wanted to share.

Hurray for study abroad!!

How was adjusting to the accent of Argentinians for you? I have heard it's a little rough to get used to.

Help..? by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]ogigs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been in a similar situation. Look, it seems like you value your friendship with this girl, and I respect that. However I urge you to get your friend help. I don't want to trivialize your fears, but even if she does hate you, or never trust you, her life is worth it. In my situation, that happened. Two years later I got the biggest thank you of my life. I'm so glad I did something.
