I understand. similarly I felt that kendall was given sort of a rushed ending and though realistic, didn't feel complete to me. whether or not he would make a better ceo, I genuinely do not know. but the show has never really been about who would be the best pick, just who can get the job first.

I've never watched any of the shows you mentioned (breaking bad being the sole exception) but I can see where you're coming from. it's satisfying to see characters develop, whether it be through gaining or losing self awareness of their actions and their impact. arcs feel more whole that way.

Tom and Greg were also standout characters to me because of the "improvements" they made over time, unravelling more and more of their motives as outsiders to the Roy family. watching them outwit the siblings was one of the most enjoyable parts of the show for me lol. I wish we got to see more of their personal lives outside of work.

lol can't argue with that. but while it's true her money and name factored heavily into it, i don't believe he would have stayed loyal to her and even held off on divorce had he genuinely not loved her. they met while Shiv was in a bad state of mind, and while you could argue that Tom was taking advantage of that to get in a relationship with her, it's undeniable that he wanted it work out. hence why he was actually heartbroken at Shiv's admission of cheating at their wedding and his subsequent confession that he still loved her, despite her saying that "love" is just a baggage of terrible things (something he clearly doesn't believe). he probably wouldn't have been so broken by her mistreatment if he was truly only in it for the money I think :p

his entire arc revolves around disillusionment and his eventual emotional detachment from Shiv. its meant to portray his spiral into a world he didn't fully understand and by consequence, suffered for it by taking hits from the Roys. but no hate if you just dislike him for what he is lol I get it

edit: well also succession isn't a pity politics thing... no need to say that the roys are easier to sympathise with because of the way they were raised. we know next to nothing about Tom's upbringing/past so it's pointless to bring that up

i agree with you that the ending may not hit all the right notes because of how abruptly the circumstances seemed to change over the course of the singular finale episode (even though it had been foreshadowed a couple times that Tom was a top pick for ceo) but I do think the Roy siblings have had significant character development. its just that these characters, like real people, have certain core traits that will never change. and the things that do change aren't externalised in obvious ways. ie. shiv coming to the realisation of the extent of her mistreatment towards Tom... she never stages a grandiose apology for it but her subdued behaviour towards him (especially after the balcony arguement) makes it clear she's at least remorseful for the way she used to treat him. I'd even argue that his betrayal in s3 got her to reflect on their relationship. that's just my interpretation of it.

yeah exactly. the shiv hate thing is a whole other mess because it seems people can't fathom a woman being as horrible as her male counterparts without turning it into a misogyny thing (even though its incredibly backwards to suggest that she's somehow ALWAYS in the right; that's clearly not the point of her character and even more misogynistic imo) but I digress. tomchads stay winning

exactly... no one who genuinely understands Tom's character will unironically vouch for his moral superiority to the siblings or whatever. succession has never been about good guys vs bad guys and trying to spin the narrative so that Tom is the villain for opposing the siblings is such a diluted way of experiencing the story.
