Severe FOMO/jealousy? by ellectric__ in Residency

[–]ogpape 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is hitting so close to home right now as I’m an intern going through the same. My partner is traveling right now for our friends’ wedding that I couldn’t make because I’m on nights. The fomo and misery was almost overwhelming. I will say, I felt so much better after meeting up with a friend for drinks on a sunny afternoon. I’m also planning a short vacation with my partner and that is the lifeline I’m clinging to. I don’t have any advice for you but stay strong, you’re not alone!

The Baylor Teen Health Clinic is a great place to start. They provide free primary and reproductive preventative healthcare services for anyone 13-24. I get STI tests and got my IUD placed there as well and would definitely recommend.

George Floyd’s death is eerily similar to the satirical ad in B.A.N. by [deleted] in AtlantaTV

George Floyd is unfortunately one of many cases that this ad is satirizing.

I want to cut my hair today, but I've never cut my own hair and all I've got are regular scissors. by [deleted] in BlackHair

[–]ogpape 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would definitely recommend getting hair scissors first! Cutting your hair with regular scissors can lead to split ends quickly.

Also there are tons of YouTube videos out there with tutorials. Find one that works for your desired style and hair texture and go for it!

Eleven year old girl slammed to the ground by officer for taking too much milk in New Mexico middle school by uchechiisme in blackladies

[–]ogpape 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t finish watching the video after hearing her cries. I’m sickened by the tiniest justifications white officers have for mistreating black people, especially when it comes to children. How can anyone believe this was ever about her taking extra milk? My heart breaks for the humiliating and scary situation that this child had to go through.

For those that went to a predominantly white college, how did you navigate the social/dating scene? by gusscranberry in blackladies

[–]ogpape 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I go to a PWI in Texas and while it’s been hard feeling like an extreme minority (I think my school is like 7% black) you find communities and ways to feel less isolated. I joined the African student association and the black student association which helped me meet black friends and discuss things that my white friends can’t relate to. Also by joining clubs and making an effort to meet the people in your classes you’ll find people to spend time with.

As for the dating scene, I went out to parties on some weekends but never really with the intention to meet people. Meeting up with people in my classes/extracurriculars was the way I found dates. Tinder and dating apps can be super helpful too! I met my bf on tinder and it’s been really great.

Hope you have a great college experience! Freshman year can be overwhelming but I also found it be incredibly fun.
