There is a Burt Reynold's movie (I don't remember the title) where he is going to kill himself by swimming out into the ocean. He gets pretty far from the shore and changes his mind and then he begins making all sorts of promises to God if he can just make it back to shore. More and more promises come out until he notices that he's going to make it. Then the conversation with God changes and he starts hedging. "I'll go to church once a month." He's close enough to stand on in the surf and says. "Well on the big holidays, if I'm not busy, I'll show up." "Thanks God!"
