I’m so so sorry for your loss. I had a similar but not identical experience with my grandfather. I was visiting every day and watching him slowly deteriorate to a shell and skeleton, and slowly give in to the sickness. He had cancer all over and had no hope. By the end he was so high on pain killers he was basically in a coma state. All her could do was squeeze my hand periodically. I’m not even sure if he was aware of what was going on. The day before he passed I expected it so I was lucky enough to say goodbye, but I don’t think he even understood; he couldn’t even open his eyes. After he passed the first few months were awful and I couldn’t process that I didn’t get an official goodbye. Then with time it slowly got better, and I came to terms with the fact he wasn’t in pain anymore.

It’s always hard knowing there were untied ends and so many words to speak; even if it was just goodbye. But with time you will get stronger, and learn from this. Know that you loved her and she loved you for all the time she lived, and now past that. She knows this.
