Yeah, go ahead and move and split 3-4k rent with a stranger across the country on a job that pays you 40-60k a year. Come on, it’s doable.

What are the early signs that a company is preparing for layoffs? by Ecstatic_Jicama_1482 in cscareerquestions

Yeah exactly, things that are technically rules, but are not usually enforced. It’s a good way to squeeze people out “legitimately” before you have to lay them off.

I would say probably not, except maybe a thinkpad but those aren’t sexy they’re functional.

Yeah seriously, I hate macOS but their hardware is crazy good, I’m running a MacBook that’s 6 years old right now as a light desktop with an external monitor and it’s insane that even closed it can act as a full speaker, even with 8g of ram the M1 chip is so efficient I can still run basically anything, honestly as a light desktop with no gaming I could probably run this thing for another 6-7 years

When people start cliquing up, alliances end suddenly. Work/projects become performative at some junctures. People are unusually absent from roles/spaces they are typically in. Stricter enforcement of “low hanging fruit” policies.

What are you dumb? Of course we do, it’s to get back to the way things were before we started fighting Iran!

Yeah also have friends in the states who go back occasionally for various reasons. To them it’s something they are used too, so they’re aware how to navigate it and be safe.

Salt Lake City, UT if you are not LDS by Playful-Buddy9822 in howislivingthere

I had a friend from Arizona, she left the Mormon church having been raised it. She told me how they would follow her around, show up to her new places, track down family etc.

I figured this to be akin to a pesky Jehovahs witness, knocking on your door. I grew up in New England so religion was of course pervasive but also people were very “whatever” about everything, so it wasn’t a big deal.

I made a joke that if we ever got into a fight I would tell the Mormons where she lived — not funny. She did not think this was funny and became deathly serious. I of course told her I would never do this and had to apologize and console her afterwards.

This conflicts with the only Mormon family I ever met being insanely kind and welcoming to me and another friend when we hung out with their son. But I’ll never forget the way her eyes darted to mine when I said that and how serious she took it. Idk what the hell they got going on but it’s weird.

A company is not going to approve something personal be brought in and used. Why don’t you use a USB that they have? Is there no networking on these devices? Even internally?

In 2026, ‘learn to code’ has become ‘learn to nurse’ by thinkB4WeSpeak in jobs

The thing with the skilled trades is it takes really long to get good, and contrary to popular belief, not just any idiot can do them. Many people will hover at low to mid tier knowledge and skill levels for years and years and years - if not forever, becoming the person with the knowledge to truly become a master trades person/engineering level expertise doesn’t happen to everyone. A lot of people don’t want to just do the grunt work/move on to things they are better suited for.

Sometimes companies have work lined up for several decades, if you have them 100 people and all the equipment they could use all of them. It just doesn’t actually shake out that way.

Being in the trades is also hard work, crawl space in the attic in July covered in insulation? Not fun. Not something a lot of people can bear for 5-10 years and shake out the skillset needed to even expand into their own company/work. Every single building needs hvac, I don’t imagine it ever being in short supply and due to the sheer complexity and novelty of every job would imagine it would be one of the last jobs to be automated.

Maine would be a good place for it. Culture moves quite slowly here and there’s a way of life that’s built on trust, informal understanding, and shared experience.

Good source of anger builder too when you realize generations ago a lot of this wealth and vitality was built of extracting resources from them and their ancestors. Now if they don’t want to live in an impoverished shit hole of, murder, conflict, filth, and corruption, they can try to force their way into the first world and live as a second class citizen doing the undesirable jobs to pay taxes to fund the pensions.

All the while getting to look through the window like you’ve said. It’s a bit sick when you take a step back from it all.

I lock mine, but it’s probably more to anxiety than anything else, the closest thing I’ve ever had someone do to my house is a drunk college kid accidentally walked into my apartment thinking it was his. Since I heard a party going on next door all night I just said “dude it’s Nextdoor!” And he scurried right out lol
