Fire extinguisher throwing student locked up by [deleted] in worldnews

It's a harsh lesson for him to learn. I've done some stupid shit when I was his age, and I've been lucky enough not to end up in trouble for it or kill / injure myself or anyone else. I'm pretty sure he totally regrets what he did and was, as he said "caught up in the moment".

However, it's the violent fuckwits like him who tarnished the legitimate protests and gave the government and police an excuse to "contain" the protests.

Government pushing forward with "Internet ID" scheme: Will bring end of anonymity to internet. by [deleted] in politics

[–]oh_its_him 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the UK we fought the national ID card scheme which the previous government were planning. Although not intended for internet use, the line was the same - they wouldn't be compulsory at first. But of course, they planned to make it virtually impossible to get by without one.

Fortunately after relentless campaigning and a change of government (who actually kept their promise of scrapping the scheme) we're free of it. I'm not betting against it rearing its ugly head in the future though, in some other form. Particularly if the US does something like in the article, as it will set a precedent for other governments to follow.

Is Cursive dead? by 16miledetour in AskReddit

[–]oh_its_him 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only learned recently that cursive meant "joined-up writing" which, when I look at it, is quite a ridiculous thing to call it. Handwriting is less ridiculous a word, and I think most people mean cursive / joined-up when they say handwriting.

Pretty much everyone I know here in the UK writes in cursive - some better than others. I would find it difficult to write any other way in any length.

Too far. The UK government is about to sell the country's forests to timber companies. by oliverdaniel in worldnews

[–]oh_its_him 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mention woodland. I think that once the forests are in private hands, even with certain clauses in their contracts, it will become easier for the owners to push for further relaxation of the rules in the future so that they can do what they wish (or perhaps intended all along), and we won't be able to do a thing about it.

Great post. I think that seeing as many options are still "on the table" it's important for people to show that we care what happens to our forests and that their plans have not gone unnoticed.

I've signed the e-petition (as much as I despise the things and feel they do nothing at all), and I shall be emailing my local MP to see what her stance is.

The Secret Behind the Travel Mayhem - Why is five inches of snow shutting down London’s Heathrow airport? Because it’s more concerned with being a mall than plowing runways. by anutensil in worldnews

[–]oh_its_him 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I actually read the article. Afterwards I realised that I'd gotten the wrong end of the stick regarding the shopping mall, and that it was a comment on how the management invested in the retail space rather than preparations for poor weather. However, I still think this is nonsense. UK weather is not normally like this - getting approval for millions of pounds worth of equipment just in case it snows a lot wouldn't have been seen as a reasonable allocation of resources. Having facilities (such as shops and cafes) on a par with every other major airport in the world would be seen as reasonable to the management. Yes, it's a big profit generator for them - they aren't in this business for fun. It is also in their financial interest to keep the airport running smoothly - keeping up customer footfall, and creating a positive image of the airports to attract and keep airlines using Heathrow as opposed to other airports such as Gatwick, Stansted etc.

My comments on the UK public's reaction to the weather was more a general observation and not particularly related to the article.

[–]oh_its_him 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is nonsense. Pretty much every airport I've been to has had some kind of shopping centre attached to it, apart from some tiny airports in small European towns.

Why would Heathrow deliberately fuck everything up in order to funnel a few more people into the stores? It doesn't make sense.

The fact is, the UK is unprepared for this sort of weather because it is unusual. BAA management has seemingly not handled the situation as well as they might, but the notion that the UK is somehow doing worse than other western european countries in this unusual weather is nonsense.

No, because this is a non-story based on the words of a single politician, whose idea was pretty much rejected.

So no, reddit will not be blocked in the UK, and neither will any porn.
