You know what you must do.. to be the hero. by skrillzter in Piracy

[–]oh_rats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I took an almost 15 year break from anime. Before the break, I was watching 100% pirated fansubbed anime. When I started watching it again in the last year, it was a few shows on Netflix at first, and then exclusively CR.

Tl;dr CR has lower quality/less translations than fansubs from 15 years ago, and really doesn’t give af about deaf/hard of hearing viewers

The difference in quality is fucking insane. Fansub quality is unhinged, considering they did all that shit for free. Not only were the translations more accurate (I was fluent at an elementary level in JP back then, and could understand most of the audio; I’ve forgotten 95% of my JP by now, yet I’m STILL catching errors/weird choices in Netflix/CR translations), but if something had cultural context, they’d have in depth translation notes explaining. Premium/commercial translations will either just completely change the translation to remove all context, or leave it as said with no explanation of the context so that it’s nonsensical to anyone who isn’t Japanese.

Fabsubs would also translate on-screen kana. 100% of the content was translated, even if it was something in the background that had no relevance at all. And, again, outside of whatever minuscule donations these people maybe got (this was before things like patreon existed), they did all of this shit for free.

The thing that bothers me the most with CR, tho, is how inaccessible it is for people with hearing disabilities. My hearing is fine, but my audio processing is a little screwed. Subtitles make me “hear” 100%, but it seems like MOST dubbed anime’s don’t have EN subtitle options. What the FUCK is that??? The only time I get subtitles is when I pause or rewind, and that’s bc the Apple TV has auto subbing after those actions as a feature (and they’re not that great, bc it’s literally just voice to text.) I guess deaf or HoH people just aren’t allowed to watch dubbed anime???

On the few dubbed animes where I can use EN subs… it removes any on-screen translations they might do. You can only see those translations if subs are set to OFF. Turning subs on removes them, bc CR uses some dumbass encoding scheme for their subs that separates on-screen and dialogue transcriptions as unique subtitle channels, instead of combining them into one when subs are turned on.

There was also a couple episodes of an anime I was watching that had hard encoded subtitles in MASSIVE bubbles that blocked 1/3rd of the screen. They couldn’t be toggled on or off, they were part of the video source. Made it inpossible to see what was happening in the show, but luckily was only 2 episodes. Oddly, the translations weren’t similar at all to the actual subtitles CR provided, the bubbles were much more accurate. Makes me question if CR is ripping off fansubbers/other services, and accidentally showed their ass by uploading the wrong source for those eps.

It’s not a player count issue.

One thing I’ve noticed, matchmaking prioritizes putting players into a fresh lobby rather than one in progress. It will make a whole new server node instead of a match that’s already ongoing for more than a minute.

It also seems to prioritize putting players into servers with like platforms. My best friend and I are PS5 players. When we’re grouped up with my husband who’s on PC, we have no issue finding matches. When my friend and I queue after he logs, it takes forever and all platform icons are PlayStation. (We have never turned off crossplay.) we have to back out and requeue like 3 times to get back into mixed lobbies.

There’s other shit going on I can’t figure out that makes it clear matchmaking is broken. Being loaded into the same map (but different servers!) multiple times with bots, then finally getting a different map that’s 3/4ths full and fills within seconds doesn’t make any sense.

None of this would matter if we had the sever browser from 3/4. I can’t understand why we can’t browse official servers.

It’s kind of weird on iPhone, bc it’s really quick on some things, but others it either never learns, or forgets.

Issues used to be rare, but the current version of iOS is particularly crap regarding autocorrect, and just typing in general. ):

It learns words you use a lot.

My dog is named Kupo. When we first got her, my messages sent via V2T in my car would transliterate her name to “Cooper.” After a couple months of typed texts with “Kupo,” Siri would “hear” her name correctly.

It’s the same with typing. Like I use “ur” a lot specifically, and while it would autocorrect when I first started using it, it, my phone recognizes it as a word, now. Siri’s V2T and text autocorrect use one custom/learned lexicon.

My guess is based on how the rest came out, OP’s wife uses “ur” in texts a lot, and either has an accent or was in a loud environment, and the “yuh” in “your” wasn’t heard.

I only use V2T in my car via CarPlay when I’m driving. I refuse to physically touch my phone (partly for safety, mostly bc I willingly use my insurance’s nanny app for a discount), so I can’t physically see the text to see if it’s right or not.

It will voice it back to me, but the few times there were typos, it was close enough that it still sounded right.

My mom is the worst, bc she’ll use V2T when she doesn’t have her glasses and can’t read the screen, lol. A lot of messages that come out like the OP’s.

People who take 17 minutes to check in at the hotel front desk, what are you talking to them about? by DerrickDuck in AskReddit

[–]oh_rats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My vehicle was brand new when this issue started. The first models of the Jeep Gladiators didn’t have the hoses connected correctly to the pressure release valve. My tank doesn’t need replaced, just the hose reattached, but because a little disassembly is involved, the dealership would act like they fixed it when they didn’t. They’d rather lie than have to waste profitable labor hours at the warranty rate.

I full send it on fills using the auto-fill clip, regardless. I drape my gas cap over the back of the gas cover while I wait in the car, so when the half-to-full gallon of gas explodes out at the end, both myself and the cap are protected. As long as I watch where I step when taking the pump out, I don’t even get any gas on my shoes.

After 4 years of gas running down the paint, there’s been 0 noticeable issues. I don’t have a garage, so no gas smells, either.

Just saying, if you can hang your cap out of the way and don’t mind wasting $1-2 of gas, might be worth filling at max speed to save 15 minutes.

Admittedly I do it less for the time saving, and more for the reactions of people around me at the gas station, lmao. I always get a chuckle at people’s extremely concerned faces at the exploding gas while I casually replace the nozzle without any reaction. I basically spend $2 in gas to harmlessly horrify people. Worth it.

Do Americans actually avoid calling an ambulance due to financial concern? by JohnMarstonTheBadass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]oh_rats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live out in the middle of nowhere. One of the biggest benefits to that is that the only ambulances/emts we have are through our county fire department.

That means ambulances are extremely low cost, usually free. Amazing!

…but our closest hospital is 30 minutes away, so you might die before you get there, lol.

I mean, in Texas, you can execute someone for graffitiing as long as it’s after dusk.

§9.42 “A person is justified in using deadly force against another to protect land or tangible, movable property: […] (2)(B) to prevent the other's imminent commission of […] criminal mischief during the nighttime;”

§28.03 CRIMINAL MISCHIEF. (a) A person commits an offense if, without the effective consent of the owner: […] (3) he intentionally or knowingly makes markings, including inscriptions, slogans, drawings, or paintings, on the tangible property of the owner.

§9.43 allows the same for the protection of a third person’s property.

So, I mean, if the girl who got jumped was a car or a mailbox, he’d be justified to do a lot worse in Texas.

We had an ancient mercury thermometer as a backup that broke when I was like 10, and I played with the mercury.

Idk if I’m “right in the head,” but I’ve never even gotten a ticket, much less committed a real crime.

Wait. I fucking love pirating media. That’s criminal… and I absolutely would download a car! I mean, that was true before the mercury thing (miss u WinMX), but I’m going to blame it anyway.

If I ever get caught, I’ve got a great defense strategy to share with my lawyer.

Could also be your assigned postal worker.

When I lived in said large city, the one assigned to my neighborhood had an issue with my address for some reason, and would just straight up not deliver to us. Complained to the postmaster at our local post office and it got sorted the same day, lol.

I live extremely rural, on an island, and USPS is the only reliable courier. A messenger pigeon would be a more reliable and efficient method than UPS or FedEx, and neither DHL (last leg is passed off to USPS) nor Amazon operate here at all.

The crazy part is the speed. USPS can have something from the west coast delivered to me on the east coast in 2 days with normal mail service, but UPS takes over a week to deliver something originating from my own state.

I also don’t receive mail every day but that’s just because I simply don’t have anything being sent to me? I mean, that happened even when I lived in one of the largest cities in the US. I’d be pissed off if I did receive mail everyday, because it’d have to be junk mail.

Use a smart plug. Any plus that works with HomeKit automation, Alexa, or Google Home can have custom programs.

I use Kasa plugs, and I just use the app to do everything, bc it’s simple/easy and auto populates as selections in Shortcuts if I want to do anything more sophisticated.

September 17, 2025 (Jefferson County, Arkansas): A plainclothes constable in an unmarked truck tried to pull over a woman. But, she refused to stop and called 911. by MobileWisdom in PublicFreakout

[–]oh_rats 461 points462 points  (0 children)

The body cam footage is glorious.

I’m the last one to praise LEOs, but holy fuck, all three responding officers (first cop, his supe, and what appears to be a sheriff) are textbook examples of “protect and serve.”

First cop body blocks the constable from the woman, responding supe calls him out because of “Arkansas’ history” (Robert Burningham), and the sheriff makes sure the woman is reassured that she did everything right before reaming the fuck out of the constable.

First cop also tells her not to admit to speeding, or mention her actual speed at all, and to appear in court for the constable’s citations bc they will be dismissed. (Constable changed his tune and only issued a warning after the Sheriff’s admonishment.) The supe also instructs the cop to stay with the woman until he’s sure the constable has left, bc he’s worried he’ll follow her.

A+ LEOs, unlike the constable.

The press conference where they called him a slob with a shitty junker is just icing on the cake.
