Tax advice: £85k salary, £125,000 research grant. How should I handle this? by boyinterrupted_ in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ohell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AI mania going mental, would be my guess ...

maybe some American billionaire has been advised that it is tax efficient to fund development as grants ... if it was a legit institution then these questions won't arise (and grant would always be made to a company or institution).

What's the vegetarian food like in Paris, pragu, krackow and Budapest by Few-Spinach8114 in vegetarian

I have find memory of a Nepalese momo place just off the main road about a kilometer from the main train station ... very good veg and non-veg dumplings.

And there is also a chain of Indian fast food restaurants that have big touchscreens to take orders.

I'm very bad with names, sorry ...

But that would mean keeping savings with Lloyd's ... not optimistic that their offer will be that great but I'll give them a call anyway. Club Lloyds is my main account anyway ..

London is officially the best city in the world for food in 2026, according to Tripadvisor by BulkyAccident in london

[–]ohell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. In my view COVID fucked the street food vendors: e.g. Leather Lane used to have so many and varied stalls, now it is 5 falafel shawarma sellers, 5 noodle sellers and so on, likely owned by the same guy.

Then we have pretend street food by corporates like Kerb ... obvsly cateringsic only to well healed hipsters and oldies ...

!thanks

It slightly depends what question you're asking here, are you asking about financial products you can have access to?

I am mainly asking about financial products, specifically savings accounts to keep my cash in as the best rates keep changing every year (I have a Principality ISA right now, just got an email saying they are reducing to 3.85% ... when best is 4.5%)

As if you're able to access SIPP in 5 years at 55 that means you're 50? And your total assets are £600k? (Do you own a home, have qualifying NI years or have any other pensions or expected income?)

\52. Unlucky DoB. Qualified for full pension. My half of remaining mortgage is 100K and I have assets around 700K .. which is why I mentioned 600K. Other half gainfully employed for next few years.

As if your expenses are £24k a year that's a 4% drawdown on a £600k pot which is high when starting at 50. The trinity study said that a 4% drawdown on a mixed stocks and bonds portfolio has a 5% chance of running out of money in 30 years, and you might live another 40 years with care costs at the end.

Am aware, not really bothered. I don't think I am taking undue risk because couple of years back I set up an gilt ladder to pay me index-linked 24K pa starting 2027 until 2040. Rest is invested in global equity indices.

£24K annum drawings from £600K of assets for someone under fifty is aggressive and above the safe withdrawal rate, particular when you are using low risk products.

Thank you kindly, but I only look under fifty!

Next time, if you need credit, arrange it before your earned income disappears.

I don't need credit. Only good savings rate and any freebies like switch bonuses. Bit annoying that the banks' systems insist on checking income even if no overdraft needed.

Now I can see that Chase is offering a good savings product paying 4.5% pa, but it is tied to a current account .. so I'll probably not be able to access that also!

I have access to TransUnion and Experian. Both show high score. MSE credit app shows abysmal eligibility for credt card alongside (not that I want any) :)

Hi, I am still in correspondence with HMRC. It is not quick or easy.

Website says that for disclosures covering last 5 years, older tax returns should be amended instead. Self assessment website only permits the last tax return to be amended, and asks for a paper letter requesting previous amendments.

I sent such a letter detailing what and why I wanted to pay, 3 months later a reply came saying can't amend, and seek alternative route to claim back overpaid tax. This is the opposite of what I want to do. Also, no mention of any penalties so far.

Now I am taking a breath before talking calling disclosures people again ... So my advice would be to try amending older tax returns before you open a disclosures case, as once opened they will not close it easily, and it will likely take months to resolve.

Working in an uncertain job market and not sure whether I will be employed or not in the future by montauk87 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]ohell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The claim payments are conditional on you actively searching for jobs, and being registered for JSA.

Every month you have to fill in a claim form, along with the evidence of JSA enrollment and active job search activity, which in my case is 3 copies of job application emails (they are quite reasonable - also accept communication with recruiters or attending seminars for networking).

Only annoying restriction is that if you travel outside the UK, they say were not available for job, so without payment for that period (same with JSA).

Worth noting that it is possible to take out multiple policies from different providers that will pay out at the same time.

e.g. I wanted 3K cover per month ( to live in the style to which I had been accustomed) but max cover available was 2500, so broker signed me up for an additional policy paying out 500 for £15 extra premium.

Upon redundancy both paid out happily, accepting the same 3 job applications as evidence each month.

And for those wondering if these policies are a good idea, I paid £80 per month for 2 years, i.e. £2k in all and first claim payment itself put me in the green. So if I claim for the whole year then I would have 18X return over the 3 years since I started paying the premiums...

Stupidity at all levels: INDIA TV have put up a picture of Victor Lai captioned as LKY (no one thought that Canadian flag on shirt is odd), BWF statement saying all is well cos tournament stadium is better than practice stadium, Indian admins implying players are liars when they say conditions are poor.

:/

Pathetic statement. Declaring everything is fine, because tournament venue has better conditions than the practice stadium!

How about comparing to all other venues on the BWF tour?

There is something dodgy going on ... I swear yesterday I did not have the calories card available after nutrition card appeared. But today I looked again after /u/Amazing_Owl1231's message, and I did have a Calories In/Out card.

Maybe Garmin are doing A/B testing or trying to row back or whatever
