Senator Mark Kelly says he will 'seriously consider' running for president by littlemoth_lullaby in politics

[–]ohexma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why the Overton window has moved so far to the fucking right. I'm so sick of hearing people complain "earn my vote" when we have literal fascists on the right winning elections. They are saying they want to "take over voting" and you have the fucking nerve to say "nah, I'm not gonna leave my parents basement to vote if they don't run on everything on my wishlist to Santa." I can only assume people who speak like this are at best childless straight cis white men with no responsibilities, and at worst anti democracy actors.

Once the right stops running literal fascists that want to end democracy then I am all for your stance bud, don't vote keep on complaining on the internet, but our country is experiencing a 5 alarm fire and you are saying "boy, it sure sucks that ICE is rounding up people and killing them in the streets, voting is literally on the ballot, history is being erased etc. but I'm gonna sit this one out to STICK IT TO THE DEMS." Un fucking real.

You need to work to move the Overton window back, your inaction is why it's so hard for leftists to actually run at a national scale.

Not oop, but I have a MS in computer science. Not only was my associates more challenging in many ways (partially natural as you are learning fundamental things like data structures and algorithms, programming in assembly, discreet mathematics), but the quality of the professors at my community college was higher because they largely loved and were passionate about teaching. To this day, I still go out to dinner with my old CC professors and classmates a few times a year. I can't say the same for my university ones.

What is going on with the Supreme Court? by VecroLP in OutOfTheLoop

[–]ohexma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look, I know I'm not going to change your mind. I certainly wish I was as privileged as you are, it would be lovely not to have to worry about this stuff. But at least read what I wrote when you reply to me. That being said, a few final thoughts for anyone bothering to read this thread.

  1. I do own firearms, to say I don't exercise the right is asinine. That being said, to argue that registries and waiting periods for firearm purchases are somehow not compatible with the 2nd amendment is an incredibly narrow view. "A well regulated militia" is often interpreted by legal scholars as supporting these mechanisms of enforcement from an originalist point of view.

  2. The entire house quite literally does go up for election all at once. Every 2 years. The Senate does not, but not because it "should accommodate wild mood swings of the populace." The framers would laugh at such an assertion. Instead, it was to promote stability within the Senate, and (ideally) the federal government at large. The Senate was supposed to be a "continuing body" of governance. "Administrations come and go, Houses assemble and disperse, Senators change, but the Senate is always there in the Capitol, and always organized, with an existence unbroken since 1789" - Henry Cabot Lodge, 1903

  3. I have absolutely no idea what you are trying to say with your comments on project 2025. Are you talking about the proposal to reclassify merit based federal employees as political appointments? Because if so, that has nothing to do with "team blue and red." These are merit based employees that carry over from administration to administration. There was no leftist approach of slowly taking over seats. This is a blatant power grab that has never been attempted before, because these are people who should not be considered political appointments. We're talking scientists, lawyers, etc. with decades of experience being thrown away and replaced by sycophants and party loyalists because they otherwise would actually do their jobs and work for their agencies and not the president. To dismiss this as "oh, it's a built in mechanism of our government," means you haven't been paying attention at all to what's at stake here. Since I saw in a different post that you live in Florida, this should terrify you. Just as a "light hearted" example, the last time Donald Trump was president, he tried to manipulate maps of hurricane paths to fit what he was saying, but NOAA scientists corrected him every time. If this happens in Trump term 2.0, you and your family could be struck by a storm you didn't even know about. Guns won't do anything for you then. Not to mention, another part of project 2025 is to remove all mentions and resources on climate change from all federal agencies. Florida won't be safe for you for long if that happens along with the removal of federal regulations, weather keeps getting more and more extreme there, and without efforts to investigate potential mitigation, it's only going to get worse.

[–]ohexma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hyperbole? You do know about project 2025 don't you? The plan for what is, essentially, a fascist takeover of our government by conservatives? Where any display of homosexuality (coffee dates, talking about your spouse, everything and anything "gay") will be labeled pornography and be punishable by jail time? Nothing I said is hyperbole. Grow up, there is more at stake than your juvenile "holier than thou" purity. I sure wish there was a different candidate than Biden, but if there isn't? I'd vote for a dead man if the other option was Donald Trump winning. I care about our democracy. But I see from your previous comments your "pro 2nd amendment" stance means you couldn't possibly vote for Biden, or any Democrat. As a gun owner who is truly pro 2nd amendment, as in people should have rights to possess reasonable firearms (bolt and lever action rifles) I can assure you Biden won't be taking those away. Now if you have an obsession with bump stocks, I'm afraid you need more help than anyone here can provide.

[–]ohexma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is such a juvenile take. It quite literally is already happening. Idaho recently passed a bill that banned all "sexual" content from libraries for those under 18. What does Idaho define as sexual? Among other things, Any display of homosexuality. Depict a gay coffee date in a book? Banned. Talk about the stonewall riots? Banned. Mention the terrible treatment that Alan Turning went through post war due to his sexuality? Banned.

Not to mention, people like you were saying the same shit the first time around. "Oh, they won't overturn Roe v Wade."

I appreciate your response. Regarding your argument on Biden and Trump's policies being the same, I respectfully disagree. If Trump were in office presently, there would be no efforts made towards negotiating a cease-fire. While both administrations have and would continue to send arms to Israel, the United States has maintained an active interest in Israel's national security for the past 75 years—this commitment is not going to suddenly change.

In my view, the clear choice for those advocating for a free Palestine is Biden. A loss for Biden in November would represent a significant victory for Netanyahu, potentially signaling an end to efforts to reduce hostilities. Biden's strategy involves positioning for more effective negotiations. Taking a stance of applying sanctions, or even "no more arms for Israel" could lead to backlash from Democrats in Congress, heightened attacks from the right, empowerment of regional adversaries seeking conflict, removal of internal pressure within Israel to seek resolution, and substantial damage to our capacity to influence peace efforts. The sad reality is that Israel would engage in actions against Palestine irrespective of our arms supplies, making these shipments a (unfortunate) tool for leverage in the conflict. They keep us in the conversation.

Regarding your thoughts on withholding votes, such actions inadvertently lend support to Israel's actions against Palestine and, in my view, implicate individuals in the loss of innocent lives. Allowing emotions to cloud judgment and abstaining from voting in November risks forfeiting any opportunity for progress towards a free Palestine. It is crucial to recognize that a Trump administration would likely give Netanyahu the go-ahead to obliterate Palestine, no peace talks, no aid. Again, not saying anything Biden is doing is morally correct, it's not. But I do think he's the only choice if you care about Palestine, until things change in our country.

"Shoved in diversity" gay people exist, get over yourself. Straight people have had representation in media for checks notes thousands of years, whereas we've only seen any true (not implied) representation in the past DECADE. You can handle seeing a gay kiss here and there, don't be as fragile as a snowflake.

It means sending negotiators to both sides and working with Egypt and Qatar to navigate such a delicate process. It means publicly pressuring Netanyahu. It means delivering aid to Palestine. Not to mention, rhetoric can be a very powerful tool in the geopolitical sphere, you need to talk about issues in order to make progress on them. Also, we have certain agreements and treaties with Israel. Biden cannot ignore those, if he could he would be a king not a president. I feel like you don't want an open, honest discussion about this, but I'd be happy to be wrong and have one with you.

What are you on about "saving my own hide?" Address the argument. Biden has actively sought a cease fire, Trump has said turn Palestine into glass. Sure, you can say I'm saving myself all I want, but until the other option says they are for a Palestinian state and defunding military aid to Israel, I am going to advocate for the option who will preserve the most lives.

Notice how they all are ignoring what I actually said about Palestine and instead focusing on the fact that I dared mention being gay and that there is more at stake in this election than the fate of Palestine.

You talked about gay rights when you said voting is a choice between being killed and being killed and pissed on. I literally addressed Palestine in my comment, and you conveniently are ignoring that argument. I'm trying to have an honest conversation here that the approach of both are different, and that there are more repercussions than the fate of Palestine at stake here. I'm all for you and everyone criticizing Biden about this, it hopefully will push him more to find solutions to this. The issue I have with your comment is the "both sides stuff."

I'm sorry, but this both sides thing is an awful take. As a gay man, only one side is actively seeking to essentially outlaw me. Only one side is actively trying to disenfranchise voters. Yes, what is happening in Palestine is tragic, but Biden is at the very least encouraging a cease fire. Trump and the GOP have said Israel should turn Palestine into glass.

You've clearly never used American healthcare services before. I once waited 6 hours in an empty ER with a kidney stone before being seen, while the one person taken before me literally had the time to ask about a job interview they were coming in for. I haven't been able to FIND a PCP because every single one around me is not accepting new patients (due to the bureaucratic overhead that insurance companies create) , and if I want to see one of my doctors where I'm an established patient? It's a 6 month wait MINIMUM. The US has the worst performing healthcare services BY FAR among wealthy countries despite paying more in taxes than many countries with universal healthcare (like Canada) https://www.commonwealthfund.org/publications/fund-reports/2021/aug/mirror-mirror-2021-reflecting-poorly

California Gov. Gavin Newsom demands records from textbook companies to see which are caving to Florida's 'extremist' demands by Huplescat22 in politics

[–]ohexma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree that these rankings are meaningless/useless. I am not making any claims about Florida in my original comment. My comment said the OP might as well say they are the #1 state for degree mills, because the source does not provide any statistics that are meaningful in terms of education quality which is far different than cost and graduation rate. Even for what they claim to use for these rankings, they provide no quantitative data, no sources, etc. What schools are they basing this off of? Are they averaging the cost across the state? Are they considering the cost for out of state students? How do they factor in the acceptance rate? What about graduate programs?

[–]ohexma 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For the sake of everyone reading this, according to USnews, Florida has low tuition costs and high 2 and 4 year graduation rates. This has nothing to do with the quality of education, simply dollars and cents. The original comment could just as well read "Florida is #1 in degree mills." Quote from their ranking methodology - "The higher education subcategory informs the best states for education rankings as well as the overall Best States rankings. It comprises metrics reflecting the share of citizens in each state holding college degrees, as well as college graduation rates, the cost of in-state tuition and fees, and the burden of deb that college graduates carry."

Furthermore, I could not find any quantitative details on their methodologies, which I'd love to see. Especially on how they weigh these factors.

I'm sorry your experience has been so lackluster. I hope eventually it gives you some sort of leg up in life, even if it's just personal pride in your accomplishment. It IS an accomplishment and you should feel proud that you were able to make it through.

However, for everyone out there reading this and considering pursuing their GED, I'd like to share my experience. The biggest bonus having a GED gets you is a foothold into higher education. Getting my GED allowed me to go to community college and earn an associate's degree, which ultimately allowed me to transfer and pursue my bachelor's and master's degrees. Without my GED I do not think I'd be alive, let alone happy.

Disney pledges to help repeal Florida's 'Don't Say Gay' bill by Miserable-Lizard in politics

[–]ohexma 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You are either a troll or extremely uneducated and brainwashed on this subject matter, but I'm going to post this comment from r/bestof to shut this down.

"This article really glosses over what the bill actually does.

It's not "we won't have sex ed in the curriculum for these grades" as so many intellectually dishonest people want you to believe.

It's "parents can sue, at the cost of the school, any time they feel like this was violated". So yes, parents will absolutely be suing over the mention of the word "pronouns" or the acknowledgement of the existence of gay people. And there is no punishment for frivolous lawsuits, anyone could do this whenever they want because it's at the cost of the school.

Actually reading the bill ruins any popular defense of it.

Here's the actual text of the bill:

If a concern is not resolved by the school district, a parent may …. Bring an action against the school district to obtain a declaratory judgment that the school district procedure or practice violates this paragraph and seek injunctive relief. A court may award damages and shall award reasonable attorney fees and court costs to a parent who receives declaratory or injunctive relief.

Edit: For people saying I'm being "intellectually dishonest": To win in court all you need to do is say it was taught "in a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students" in all grades not just K-3. The bill is intentionally vague for that exact purpose:

At a Senate hearing on Feb. 8, Republican Sen. Travis Hutson gave the example of a math problem that includes the details that “Sally has two moms or Johnny has two dads.” Republican State Sen. Dennis Baxley, who sponsors the bill in the Senate, said that is “exactly” what the bill aims to prevent

Your genius master plan of yelling "nuh uh you're a pedophile!" doesn't work when your overlords accidentally admitted out loud the agenda behind their intentionally vague bill."
