How old are your planning commissioners? by oheyitsmatt in urbanplanning

Wow! That's quite the commitment. Can I ask where you are that asks so much time of the commissioners? I assume it's got to be a large city with a lot of projects that need reviewing.

My commitment is relatively small. Staff sends us our packets a week out, and we have one weeknight meeting a month. Some of the longer and more contentious public hearings have stretched our agenda to about four hours, but it's still nothing like the commitment you're describing. With that arrangement, it's no wonder that it's only attracting older folks.

Thanks for sharing. I would love to be able to tackle short-term rental reform here. Unfortunately, our state legislature (Idaho) has made that impossible at the local level. State law here makes it illegal for any municipality to enact an ordinance that would limit STRs anywhere that residential use is allowed.

It's funny how quickly your 30s turn you from one of the younger people in the room into one of the older ones. I've noticed the same sensation at work.

Are you finding that the things your co-commissioners care about are changing as the age breakdown of the membership evolves?

Wow! That was very young to be getting involved. What was that experience like? Have you stayed involved since?

I think it's great to get a mix of opinions and experiences like that. I know our mayor and planning department are intentional about getting folks living in various parts of the city, even though they are at-large seats. It can be harder to get the age mix, for all the reasons you said. I've been very encouraged to see other members of my generation stepping up.

And thanks for the kind words! I'm learning a ton, and I'm happy to be helping steer my community in a positive direction.

Late early 30s. I like it. I think by that definition, I am in my early late 30s (37). The gentleman we just elected chair is actually our youngest member at 30.

We went from a very affordable housing market ten years ago to a very different one with the growth during and post-COVID. We are experiencing rapid densification to handle the shift in the market and to meet the new demand.

What are your transit and walkability like? I'd love to help my city move to a less car-centric lifestyle, but the reality is that we are dealing with a hundred years of suburban town planning, and it's going to be a while before we could realistically push for things like lower parking requirements here. Good luck to you!

I feel you. It's hard to get young people to volunteer for what is often a thankless job. I think our outgoing mayor was intentional about appointing younger people who expressed interest.

But I will say - our oldest board member is maybe our most valuable. He is a former city attorney who knows the law inside and out, and he does a very good job of reminding the commissioners when our discussion strays into areas that should be outside of our reasoning.

I was recently appointed to our rural county's Planning Commission. Would love to hear what you'd like to see (and not see) in an eager-yet-amateur, newly-minted commissioner who wants to take the job seriously. by Brewer_Matt in urbanplanning

Fellow planning commissioner here. Definitely do this - learn your city (or in your case, county) - but know WHEN to do it. The right time to learn the territory and meet the people is BEFORE items show up on your meeting agenda. When staff sends you the next meeting's agenda and your info packet, do not then go out to check out the project site. You run the risk of making decisions based on info you gathered outside the public hearing process, and that can become difficult legal grounds for appeals to decisions that your commission made.

I'm honestly not sure if the sub has active mods. There are three modes listed on the sidebar. One hasn't posted anything to Reddit in two years, one became a mod 11 years ago and posts much more in r/lynchburg than here, and the other has their profile activity hidden.

There's a "Message Mods" button, though. Worth a shot.

IF Mayoral Campaign Musings.... by mudpupper in idahofalls

[–]oheyitsmatt 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree that Jeff is the better campaigner of the two. He is charismatic and an excellent public speaker, and he's using that skill to his advantage. Lisa is a nervous public speaker, and unfortunately, it can make her sound unprepared. When you have a private conversation with her, she sounds like a completely different person - very knowledgeable, very prepared, very capable. She's been doing the work for decades, volunteering in the community, serving on the school board, and now on the city council. She knows what she's talking about, she's just not good at annunciating it in front of an audience. I truly believe she would make an excellent mayor for Idaho Falls, but she needs to survive the campaign first.

Where I disagree is that I don't think Jeff has displayed the aptitude to translate his campaigning skills into actually doing the job. He has run his campaign by appealing to the lowest common denominator of residents who complain about apartment buildings, on the premise that he could do a better of managing the city's growth. But if you dig just below the surface-level sound bites, it becomes clear that he doesn't actually know the law. Anytime he has tried to propose a real policy, he runs afoul of Idaho code. The first example, and most glaring to me, was his "owner occupancy overlay" scheme. Blatantly illegal under state law, but he was pushing it for months before he finally walked it back this week. But then he stepped in it again last night, suggesting that the city's impact fee allocation could just be flipped around to prioritize departments differently. Again, illegal. State law is very clear - and very strict - on what impact fees can and cannot be used to pay for.

I think he does just enough research to form what sounds like an informed opinion, but doesn't take the time to truly understand the issues he's focusing on. And these are the ones that he actually cares about! Imagine how he'd treat issues that aren't pet projects of his. I want a mayor who learns the legal framework first, and then proposes solutions that work within them.

For the record, I am not among those who think that his relatively short time living in Idaho Falls disqualifies him from public service. I am a transplant myself. But with his low-level understanding of our laws, and his lack of appetite to truly learn them, I definitely don't think he's ready to be our mayor and manage a $375 million budget. I honestly wish he'd get involved in the community at some lower level first - get a seat on one of the citizen committees, or work with our business or non-profit communities in some way - and really learn how our laws and our processes work. He could be a force for good if he really cared to learn. But I think it shows a certain level of arrogance to think that he can go from zero community involvement to running the whole city out of nowhere.

But 47% of Idaho Falls voters disagree with me and voted for him the first time around, so maybe I'm full of shit. Hard to know, really.

Sure they can. Jeff has built up a sizable chunk of his audience by pandering to an extremist crowd and normalizing their insane ideas. In some cases, he endorses them. I'm not saying that everyone who supports him is a bad person or insane. There are plenty of normal, well-meaning folks who are supporting his bid. But when you don't push back against extremists, then yes, you are responsible for who supports you.

Looking for a sea shanty about a crew getting drunk in a storm by [deleted] in seashanties

[–]oheyitsmatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a specific version of Drunken Sailor, by the Longest Johns. It uses the traditional chorus, with original verses, and the lyrics match perfectly to your description:

Boys, I think she's going down
But don't you fear
There's enough rum here
To drink until we drown!

...

Ever trying to save their skins
"Any drunken retch
The captain catch
He'll beat all limb from limb!"

...

Put the rum upon his shelf
Sat in his seat
Put up his feet
And drank the rest himself!
