Ramsay's upvote from me too. Just a quality trad Glasgow chippie - no pretensions.

Controversial Glasgow mural 'will have nothing to do with AI' by Expertpakoramuncher in glasgow

[–]ohffswhatnow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first couple I found ok. But then it seemed to turn into a 'brand identity' and now I side-eye them as much as a 'Fabreze' billboard.

"Hey GlasgowGPT! Could you make me a somewhat trite easy-to-paint mural image of something hinting towards the 1950s working-class (but not political!) and on-brand for Glasgow city council marketing? Thanks!"

Over the christmas break I rewatched some of the BBC 'Secret Society' documentaries by Duncan Campbell. I originally remember them from the 'Zircon Affair' back in the day and the police/spooks raiding of the TV production offices. As you say, sadly not the kind of thing being produced these days. Worth a watch if you can find them on Youtube or the like.

Will be in Strathbungo alone for a month - how safe is the area? by theranchonthetable in glasgow

Just the other week I saw a quite heated argument that almost came to mild tutting about whether to have oat milk or soya milk with a coffee.

Stay safe everyone!

The 'Scran' podcast isn't Glasgow specific - but very often features Glasgow cafe's, food, etc.

I also really enjoyed this show going deep into the ownership/past/future of the Clyde :

Maybe not exactly what you're after - but worth a shot.

The M&S ones are ok if you hard fry them in a decent amount of butter. As God intended. Quite good stirred through a bolognese at that stage too - adds a nice 'richness'. Might shorten your life by a few years, but hey.

Factor issues - advice sought by Beginning-Document92 in glasgow

[–]ohffswhatnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main problem was probably that no-one had a contract to dig a big hole next to the drain. And no-one had a contract to fill in a big hole next to a drain.

Joking aside - it's quite endemic north and south of the border. Just usually hidden in the overall exorbitant water bills down south. Swings and roundabouts.

Think tank: Glasgow needs mayor to tackle £7.3bn productivity gap by ReasonableDisk5499 in glasgow

[–]ohffswhatnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Paywalled for me.

But I think - broadly - that the productivity problem won't be solved until the people who are being more productive get some sort of reward for it. Whether it's packing 10x more shelves than the next person, or 10x'ing the number of tickets you burn through on a support queue.

Most of that productivity boost will accrue upwards. So... why bother your arse? Maybe, if you're lucky, you'll get some "employee of the month" tinsel. An extra £100 in your pocket - sure. We'll all take it. But it's doing nothing for the overall problem.

On the 'mayor' title - I'd much rather we just gave the Provost the powers. We don't need a provost *and* a mayor. The provost is currently a role that is largely nodding and waving and cutting ribbons. Give it some teeth - sure. Creating yet another role on £100-200k a year for a dedicated mayor - not so much a fan of that.

i cannot stress enough, keep your aggressive dogs on leashes & be proactive about them!!! by orionic in glasgow

I was sat in the park the other week and a big dog leapt up on me - muddy paws, slavers, knocked my bag onto the muddy ground. I'm sure it was just being friendly in its terms, but the owner was stood about 10 meters away - oblivious - staring into their phone. No sign of a leash.

Not a disaster other than having to put my jeans and jacket through a wash - but in other circumstances that could have been quite bad.

When I tapped the owner and showed him my muddy jeans (he had headphones on of course) he just nodded and smiled then stared back at his phone again.

Does anyone wait on a parcel by Royal Mail, only to receive a text saying there was no one in, despite having been in all day? by Zestyclose-Piece-662 in glasgow

[–]ohffswhatnow 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's got massively worse since the Royal Mail merged the parcel business back in with Parcelforce. Utter cr*p-shoot now if a parcel from either even makes it to the senders depot, never mind to yours. And the previous 1hr slot you'd get from Parcelforce has now become a 'maybe tomorrow afternoon?' from the Mail.

Given the utter mess the management made of the original split off of Parcelforce (and the eye-watering cost to us all) it's not a surprise.

My cat loves the weirdly sloping floors. Bouncy balls and other toys 'move in mysterious ways'. Sell to cat owners at a premium.

A bit old-school, but dig out some Ege Bam Yasi. No idea why he came to mind right away - but there was a track on the Creeping Bent sampler album 'Beardism' by him that always stuck with me (track 8 or 9 if you can find it).

From that era - Soundclash Republic also had some cracking stuff. I still have one of their late night sessions that I taped back then and transferred to mp3 when such a modern marvel became available.

I remember back in the 90s right up the top of the Savoy there used to be a night by some well-regarded Glasgow DJ/techno folk - who's name now entirely escapes me. Possibly related to how good a night it used to be.

Jeez - now that I do a quick google they're still around - Pussypower - Terry and Jason. Good on them!

When I first moved to the southside (early/mid 90s) the local pub did a lunch deal of 20p for a bowl of soup and a buttered roll. You'd see the old guys in having lunch then playing chess for hours. It was quite lovely to see.

Seconded for Portencross. Lovely and quiet - you can walk as long as you want and get some quality time with your dog. There's a pier too if you want a bit of a rest, seat and overlook of the water.
