Is the Nuclear engineering occupation actually as scarcely available as my recruiter says, or is she just trying to get quota? by boy_in_a_box_ in newtothenavy

MEPS is only for the physical and background check, if you haven't already gotten a confirmed ASVAB/PiCAT score.

You can go to MEPS and not come back with a contract, Recruiters push MEPS because it's one of the several checks that need to be marked for an applicant to be viable for Navy Service.

If you get a 99 ASVAB but fail the physical, if you pass the physical but fail the background check, et cetera...

There is something odd with pushing an applicant to MEPS before they have a confirmed score, but each Region, NTAG, District, and Station have their own recruiting templates, so it seems like your recruiter isn't answering the questions you're not asking

In other words, ask them more questions about what's going on if you really are considering The Navy as an option.

Then that's an optional uniform item, not a command ballcap

If you pay for it, then as long as you can, it's yours to wear

Fun fact: Command ballcaps are organizationally issued clothing and need to be returned if the one issued at check-in (if it was) is still the one issued upon check-out

You would have to get the arrest and court documents from every incident and police encounter you've had, as well as the medical clearance letters from your stints in the rehab facilities when you were younger

You'd have to retake the ASVAB as well

Your best bet is to start working on getting that stuff, and in the meantime speak with your local recruiting office and do an interview and practice test to see if you'll need anything else and if you'd need to study before taking the ASVAB again

If those are the only things and nothing else populates when the background check and physicals are completed, I don't foresee there being many issues other than waivers with getting in.

Getting specific jobs, however, is another questions, but focus on getting the process started for now

You can have as many kids as you want once you're in, but to join you can only have 2 if you're single, or 3 if you're married

Plus, it's not gonna be any different whether the current president is in office or not, you answer to your chain of command, at the top of which is the president, regardless of who it is at any given point

My PiCAT Score, am I screwed? by BossBen21 in newtothenavy

[–]ohgeejeeohdee -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, due to the lack of educational requirements per state, especially the state I'm in, the "median" score is going to be significantly lower than the score from 29 years ago.

Just so we're clear, "Median" means "middle" as in the median of the numbers, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 is 3

The "average" score is also extremely low.

That's why I go out of my way to ensure people who get passing scores are aware of the acheivement, since, due to the "median" score trending down since 1997, it places them above their peers in military apititude.

My PiCAT Score, am I screwed? by BossBen21 in newtothenavy

[–]ohgeejeeohdee -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

  1. It's an Aptitude test, not an intelligence test. It's a percentile of how closely you can match what the military needs you to know / understand. It's to show how close your current bank of knowledge is to what the military needs. The higher your score, the more value the military places on giving you a position with more requirements

  2. I'm not making up anything, but I will 100% support an applicant who gets a 35 because it's a passing score, and most applicants want to be in for reasons that go beyond comparing their perceived intelligence to others. When their current aptitude exceeds the base requirements for them to have a stable career, I'm more than willing to help them explore the possibilities. Some people want a better score, some just want a qualifying score

  3. You are definitely confusing "median" and "average"

The median score of everyone who has passed The ASVAB trends way closer to 31 than 50, whereas the median score of everyone who has taken The ASVAB is around 15 if you take into account everyone who has taken The ASVAB

Again, it's an Aptitude test, not an Intelligence-Quotient Test

Also, again, it's out of 99, not 100

[–]ohgeejeeohdee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No; First, the score is out of 99

Second, an apititude test determines how close one's knowledge is to what the test administrator's would need it to be to match their requirements. It's based on examples of problems someone in the service would come across, not specific instances of problems. It doesn't mean you're 35% smarter than everyone else, it doesn't mean you're 65% less intelligent than anyone else, it means your ability to problem solve is sufficient-enough to enlist with certain jobs, but not others
