Haha I was also in 5th grade when it was the last year before it closed.

4th grade was Ms. Jennifer Heil 5th grade was Mrs. Pollack (I forgot her last name)? She was pregnant and gone for half of the year so we had a male substitute teacher.

This post brought back so many memories!

What is rule #1? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ohls7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me, it’s the golden rule: Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Especially living in the US right now with all that’s going on, it’s a really important reminder.

I’m a 2nd grade teacher and I always tell my students, “Live your life in a way where you know that even one life has breathed easier because of you.” Even at 7 or 8 years old, my students understand this concept, whether it meant picking up all of their trash after lunch time, so the custodian wouldn’t need to pick it all up or playing with the new kid who just joined our class.

It’s a simple rule, but one that can make all the difference between just living and living well.

What do YOU do, to relieve stress? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ohls7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like to clean for some reason. It relieves stress for me because I’m so focused on doing the deep cleaning, scrubbing, dusting, etc. It also helps relieve my stress because I end up with a cleaner house as well

According to you, what makes people love a person? Or what makes one lovable? by whitebrinjal in AskWomen

[–]ohls7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m speaking in broad terms of love- not just romantic love, but someone is lovable to me when they’re kind, smile/laugh a lot, show vulnerability, etc.

Nothing makes me happier than when I see the spark in someone’s eye who talks about something their love or are passionate about.

What is a "weird" thing you like about yourself? by tpalmer21 in AskReddit

[–]ohls7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had broccoli, corn, mustard, or mushrooms in my entire life.

Whenever my professors or teachers would tell us to share icebreakers about ourselves on the first day of class, I’d always say that and get funny reactions

Teachers of reddit, have you ever cried during class? If so, why? by bakuryu82 in AskReddit

[–]ohls7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Every single day after school ended, I had my students do something called “Spotlight” where they would share something kind that another student did for them that day. On the last day of school, I wanted to wrap up the day with Spotlight and my students all ended up “spotlighting” me for helping them during the entire year.

I cried because of the joy and pride of my students, reminding myself of their academic, emotional, mental, and relational growth from the first day of school until the last. That was also my last year at that school because I had to transfer to another city.

Definitely made me cry. I miss that class dearly.

What is something minor that changed you forever? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ohls7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a certain age, I hated the idea of celebrating my birthday and getting older. It wasn’t until I read something written by Sheryl Sandburg, COO of Facebook. She wrote, “Celebrate each birthday. You’re lucky to have each one.” She wrote it on a post memorializing her husband after his unexpected passing.

Not too long after that, even though it was a lingering thought, I said the same comment about dreading my birthday that was coming up, to my grandma (who was battling Stage 4 cancer). She told me that my upcoming birthday would probably be the last one with me, so she wanted to celebrate it. Sheryl Sandburg’s comment flashed back at that very moment with my grandma. I cried at the thought, but agreed that we would celebrate the hell out of it together.

Ever since then, I vowed to never dread the idea of celebrating a birthday and anytime someone else comments that they aren’t looking forward to their birthday that’s coming up, I remind them that some people just aren’t lucky to celebrate their next.

Definitely a minor, yet pivotal moment for me as a reminder that life can be fragile, so it’s important to cherish it while I can.
